Nine years have passed since we lost Asako. I miss her still. We met at Tech in Dr. Haas's French class and remained friends, sometimes close, other times more distant as we went about our separate lives. After we were reunited at the 30th class reunion we and other classmates met regularly to celebrate birthdays or just met  for lunch to "catch up". I always looked forward to those lunches to be with trusted friends.

Asako was smart, more than competent and a reassuring presence to her friends, family and to her many students throughout her years of teaching first graders how to read. At her memorial service her fellow teacher said she was a master teacher and one of the Buddhist ministers said, "she was, well, Asako". She was honest, straightforward and one always knew where she stood on any issue or idea  Although she was a devout Buddhist, she once sent me a card quoting Martin Luther which read "PEACE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ALL JUSTICE; AND PEACE WAS NOT MADE FOR THE SAKE OF JUSTICE, BUT JUSTICE FOR THE SAKE OF PEACE".

We lost Asako too soon.
