It is very sad when we loose a classmate...and the Aylings started with me in elementary school..prayers and hugs to his dear family and friends who are hurting..a really nice guy!!
It's a sad thing when most "anyone " goes away... and Lord knows we've ALL lost a potfull of friends and loved ones at this point in our lives! Rex Ayling was bigger than life to me, and now HE'S gone!
Though I really didn't know him and his family during those OHS years, I certainly knew OF them. With his 56 Merc and Leather "Counts" jacket, Rex was COOL!... We'd do a thumbs up, but that was all. At a wedding a number of years later, there was Rex with his wife Ellen!...All of us had a GREAT time.
It wasn't really until the time of our 50 th reunion that I REALLY got to know Rex. He was warm, caring, very considerate, a deep thinker, and a real PLEASURE to be with!... He was just a few months older than me. We maintained our friendship, and each year when he and Ellen would drive here to New Hampshire to visit brother Lowell in his Rochester, NH house... and their sister Leila, we'd get together and have fun!
With Lowell and Leila's sad deaths in 2018 and 2020, I'd hoped that Rex and Ellen would retire up here, but they had many friends and active lives in Baldwin and on the island... so "that" never happened. Rex and sister Susan were BOTH members of our class of 63... and NO they were NOT twins. Rex was born Jan 16, 1945... and Susan (who died in 2007) was born on March 25, 1946.
So many of us are now gone... and in MY opinion, Rex Ayling died TOO SOON!... He was my friend! Rex loved animals (especially Opposums)... he loved people, cool cars... and he loved life! I loved him for it..... and now much miss his voice, and his chuckling laugh.........

Rog,
So wonderful that you connected with Rex 10 years ago, and that you were fortunate enough to have so many special memories during this time.
