In Memory

Sharon Murdock (Lewis)

Sharon Murdock (Lewis)

October 14, 1944 ~ January 27, 2017

Our sweet wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, missionary and friend passed away Friday, January 27, 2017, in her home in Mapleton, Utah, surrounded by her family.

Doing things her own way started early, as she was born in the family home in Milton, Morgan, Utah, October 14, 1944, to Vera Bowden Murdock and Kenneth LeRoy Murdock. Sharon was the fifth of five girls at the time of her arrival, and began her life of service when her younger brother was born four years later.

The family moved to Ogden in 1945, where she grew up (all 5'2"). While attending Ben Lomond High School, she met her sweetheart, Roland Lewis, and they were later married on November 24, 1961. It was said "that it would never last". They were sealed in the Logan Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Four children blessed their family, one son and three daughters. Sharon loved her family and spent every possible hour in their service and presence.

Sharon always had an ability to reach out in service to others. When there wasn't an avenue to provide the services needed, she simply made one. The "Utah County Mothers of Twins Club" was started while in Provo. She volunteered as a hospital pink lady. As a hospital Pink Lady, she volunteered at Utah Valley Medical Center, serving as President in her 10 years of service.

In 1972, Roland and Sharon built their "castle" in Mapleton and made it flourish through hard work and love. She immediately became involved in all aspects of her new community, including serving as PTA president and in the Cub Scouts. Later, her work with the young women became a highlight in her life. The girls she served became her life long friends.

When her daughters wanted to play hardball with the boys, she started the Mapleton Girl's Softball League. For 10 years, as Mapleton Stake Dance Director, she chastised countless couples with a Book of Mormon and flashlight. Following a diagnosis of Lupus in 1979, Sharon's influence expanded through leading the Lupus Foundation, Utah South Chapter and later as President of the Utah State Lupus Foundation. She worked hard to spread a message of hope about this little understood disease.

In her personal life, she and her husband welcomed all. Their home provided a place for many family members and friends to live during their time of need. This included the care of her angel mother for 21 years.

After having spent countless hours in service of the community, she took her talents to the world. With Roland, she was called to serve within a Missionary Training Center branch presidency, until their first full-time mission to Orlando, Florida, in 1998-1999. Returning to the MTC, they volunteered until a second full time mission call came. This time, they served in the MTC International Office (2006-2007) assigned to help missionaries from around the world in their preparation. Wherever they came from, and wherever they were going, they came and went with a hug, a lesson in hygiene and a part of Sister Lewis with each one. Legendary was her love of the missionaries, as she always found time for each and every one she came across. "Go give them heaven," was her parting counsel.

Sharon was a marvelous cook; a meticulous homemaker; and the first person to jump in to start the water fight, the funeral gift fund, the neighborhood welcoming committee, or late game nights for family and friends. Her popcorn made any occasion magical. She loved the Lord, her family and everyone who crossed her path. Her life was lived with great enthusiasm and integrity. She is deeply loved and will be missed by many.

Sharon is now, as she always claimed to be, "just fine."

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, two months and three days, Roland Mansel Lewis (Mapleton); her four children: Trent (Mickie) Lewis (Magna), Jan (Cullen) Brimhall (Elk Ridge), Jodi (James) Bair (Osceola, IA), Michelle (Cory) Estes (Mapleton); 22 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren with two on the way; sisters: Janet (Gene) McCall, Darlene (Jared) Fuhriman, Kenny Taylor; and Clark Reed (Brother-in-Law).

Preceded in death by her mother and father, oldest sister, Ladean Reed and younger brother, Daniel L. Murdock.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 3, 2017, at 11 a.m., at the Mapleton Stake Center, 970 N. 400 E., Mapleton, Utah, where Viewings will be held Thursday, February 2, 2017, from 6 to 8 p.m. and prior to services on Friday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Interment in Spanish Fork City Cemetery.
