Re: Ivory Soap Posted Friday, August 28, 2009 10:34 PM I remember in 1st grade I had said something I should not have said. I had a bar of Ivory Soap placed in my mouth. To this day when I see a bar of Ivory Soap, I gag. I also remember the wooden pointers the nuns used on students. I will admit I did received a good education. I placed my daughter, Leigh, in private school from grades 6-12 and also made her take 2 years of Latin at Incarnate Girls's Academy in Houston, Tx. It is located very near Minute Maid Park. She played volleyball from grades 9-11, yearbook staff in her senior year, played softball , and many other activities. She is now a junior Psy major at U of H and if she will stop changing majors, will graduate in one year. She will be going to grad school. |

RE: Ivory Soap Posted Friday, September 4, 2009 02:45 PM Helen, I remember I got the Ivory Soap treatment too. I was just talking (what I do best). I also remember Joseph Bordelon making frequent trips to the lavatory for the treatment also, but then again I think he was pretty obnoxious. Jane |

RE: Ivory Soap Posted Friday, September 4, 2009 04:22 PM John Gauthier got the bar of soap treatment in first grade from Sr. Maximus because he spit on Suzanne. I know that others had to endure it, too, but the whole spitting thing made a huge impression on me. Ranks right up there with Sr. Maximus beating Robert Minkus and all the boys who were sailors in the Christmas play because they had giggled and misbehaved during the performance. And this was in January after we returned from the Christmas holiday -- that woman could hold a grudge. |

RE: Ivory Soap Posted Friday, September 4, 2009 04:40 PM I remember getting a bar of blue soap, Sr. Maximus made me wash my mouth out with it, I was mortally embarrassed and I knew I was going to get in trouble at home! I can't imagine what I could have said that was so bad. Maybe I was just talking, but I was very quiet in elementary school. Off the subject, who remembers Mrs. Birdie Ball? I just remember having to sing "Beautiful Dreamer" in front of the whole class one time. And having to stand up and say the multiplication tables out loud in front of the class, I sure as hell knew my facts! She was a sweet lady. |

RE: Ivory Soap Posted Friday, September 4, 2009 04:55 PM Sister Maximus was pretty tough but I thought Sister Leona was a mean vicious woman. I remember she used to make you hold out your hands and then turn the ruler sideways and smack your hands. She did that to Tom Ball once and he caught it and broke it in half. She definitely had issues. |

Yes, Sr. Leona was one of the most memorable teachers who had issues. She seemed to have radar or maybe snitches who reported back to her. During our 8th grade year, any time there was a weekend event/party, we got a lecture and had to write a paper about what went on at the party. She even got Fr. Joe involved giving us lectures about the ills of fraternizing with the opposite sex. She as well as several other nuns sure came to mind as I watched the movie, Doubt.

RE: Ivory Soap Posted Sunday, September 13, 2009 02:44 PM I remember a Geomentry teacher I had in 10th grade...I think & she was the volleyball coach. I remember her hiking up her habit and running around in tennis shoes. I thought she was a good math teacher...math was/is not my subject but I could actually understand with her help. I am certified in Physical Education/Health with a minor in History grades 6-12. Currently I am teaching at E O Smith Educational Center in Houston, Texas. I am teaching US History for 8th grade. I will search for my yearbooks and any other pictures I can find. |

RE: Ivory Soap Posted Sunday, September 13, 2009 03:20 PM that would have been Sister Dorothy! she was a good teacher, but I could not understand Geometry and did not care if the square of the side equaled the hypotenuse or not! I hated doing those proofs and have not ever used any of that information. The powers that be put me in Trig class even when I begged them not to, after a few weeks, they let me take Home Ec. instead. Biscuits I could handle! Although we had few disagreements about the length of dresses we made. |

RE: Ivory Soap Posted Sunday, September 13, 2009 03:39 PM I remember making a white dress for our graduation with fringe. This is the last time I have ever sewn anything. Don't remember too much about that night except about the party at Gail's house. Not too sure who my date was that night...just remember getting sick in the restroom in the gym. I cannot believe the nun's did not realize a lot of us had been drinking. |
