Thanks Tommy! Can't wait to hear the CD.

Also, thanks to all of you for the suggestions about what to do with my children for the weekend. Decided to ditch the whole family just for the weekend and come solo!
Looking even more forward to it now! lol!

WOW! My first time on... I am so impressed! I can't wait to see everyone. As I was reading the comments so many memories flooded my mind...twenty years already. I am really anxious to see everyone!

I see there is a cash bar are we allowed in and out of Thorndale? I was just going to go army style and go solo cup and a big glass of happy juice. Okay jungle juice would be more like it. Will we get frisked? hey important questions when hiding beverages?

Good question----and yes you can go in and out and you will probably be joined by my husband! I've never known them to have someone checking the door - we have our "own people" we've asked to cover the door - but that is just to welcome you and check everyone in.

Hi Everyone...I am really looking forward to the reunion, too. First, I'd like to say my own official "Thank You" to all those that have worked so hard to put the reunion together--It is much appreciated. I'm sure that I cannot even imagine how much time you all have put into this event and I know that most of you work full-time and have your own families to take care of. Thank You! Secondly, to those of you that aren't sure if you are going to come to the reunion...I'd like to say that we had so much fun at the last reunion that it was one of the deciding factors in our decision to move back to Oxford in 1998. Our favorite part last time would be this times equivalent of the family cookout---meeting people's kids, listening to Mike and Chance and James and Kathy and Gary Harding talking about times in Mrs. Wilkinson's English class, reconnecting with lots of old friends (many that I had known since West Oxford Elementary)and finding out that a lot of them still lived in Oxford, etc. We were really busy at that time, but looking back...I am so glad that we changed our schedule and went. I hope you all will come!

Angela that is the scariest thing I have read so far. You went to the 10 year reunion and decided to move back to Oxford. I may have to cancel my trip. There are three places I have always never wanted to end up living, the Middle East, Oxford, and hell in no particular order mind you. If I run out screaming it is because the thought of moving back has hit me. Now before anyone gets offended it is because of that dang farm and none of you well one or two of you but not all of you.

Amy Capps (Rice)

I must say that I do love living here - however Bill, I don't have to work on a farm anymore either...what is frightening though - is that I find myself wishing my boys had to do a little farming like I did....I constantly fuss that they just don't have a way to learn the same "work ethic" as I did! Lucky things!

As for coming to the reunion....what has amazed me - is how many people live right here in Oxford and I didn't even know it until they registered on this site! Life is so busy - we cannot even keep up with who still lives here - it'll be nice just to have some time to get to see each other - those that "got away" and those of us who stayed.

I don't know Bill...you never know what might happen=)(I hope that symbol means smiley face--I'm not a big e-mail person)......Seriously though, there was a little more to it than that---I don't want people to think we just had fun at the reunion, packed our bags and moved here...it was a prayerful, serious decision, but what I meant was that some of the stuff that happened at the last reunion really did help us to see that Oxford was the place for us at that time. And, We really did have a great time. {i think i did pretty well for my first ever post on a forum, but I can see the reason for your fear}=) Nothing against Oxford or its people, but moving back was not in our plans at that time. We liked living where we lived and "our plans" for "our future" involved staying in the Durham/chapel Hill area for at least 4 more years. It was kind of like the saying, "If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans" or more truly as the Bible says, "Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." In my heart, I'd always wanted to move back here at some point, I just didn't plan to do it then.....So, unless it really is God's plan for you to be back here, I wouldn't worry too much about it...but, hey you never know???.... Maybe you could have a summer house here=)....Look forward to seeing you at the reunion!
--Angela (I hope Mrs. Wilkinson's not checking grammar on these=)

Okay here comes the offensive post. Just kidding. I have nothing against living back on North Carolina except that the industry that I thrive in is not there. So unless my knowledge base diversisfy's, lottery, or something else life changing I am just fine where I am. Plus there are very few tobacco farms to cause DT's. Besides nothing is left for me there. My parents both died, never had a high school love, all my siblings left, and the drive to get a haircut at Granville Barber Shop is a little far. Besides who would really want to live in Oxford all their lives. Now that was a joke not hate mail please.

First let me start with what a great sight this is. I have had so much fun looking back and seeing were everyone is and what they are doing now. I was very suprized at just how many of our old classmates do still live in Oxford. I've been in Florida for 18 years now but I do love it when we get the chance to go home for a visit(usually at Thanksgiving or Christmas). I miss the small town living and the peaceful feeling you get. I thought I would never ever say this but I do hope to one day move back to North Carolina maybe not Oxford but close. My son loves it there but I think it's the hunting and fourwheelers he loves the most.

I'm working on the countdown CD...you guys are going to love it! I just want to confirm a couple of things about our proms.

JUNIOR YEAR:
THEME: ?
SONG: "Always" by Atlantic Starr (I think)

SENIOR YEAR:
THEME: Always on My Mind??? (Was This It? I don't think the "theme" was the song title
SONG: I think it was either Club Nouveau or Timex Social Club...
Was it Thinkin' About You Girl...
or Why You Treat Me So Bad...
(I remember it being wierd to me for the prom because it was really a break up song whatever it was.)

If you know...let me know!

Also, did we have a SENIOR CLASS SONG that was performed at graduation?

Thanks,

Tommy Owen

For people bringing children:

If you are in town on a week day, the Hix gym is open for walking from 5am(ish)--2:30pm. There is now a playground behind the gym for ages 10? and under. There is also a basketball court up on the hill and the tennis courts are still there if you want to let your youngsters chase around some balls while you get a little break. The fields are usually open during the day as well. ---The gym is really meant to be used for older people for walking, but it is fine to bring kids in for a restroom break.

A lot of the houses have been renovated in the downtown area, so if it's nice weather it's a beautiful walk.

Jones Drugstore (on Hillsboro across from Ace Hardware) is our only remaining drugstore lunch counter--they still have those great hotdogs and milkshakes, they also make a great chicken or egg salad (my favorites)They are open 8:30am-2pm weekdays.

Oxford has added several new stores downtown, but (if memory serves) Nan's --a children's gift and clothing store is probably the only one I would want to take small children into.---unless, of course, they are in a stroller=).....Am i missing any?

In the old pizza hut, in the old Winn dixie plaza, across from the old McDonalds...is one of our favorite restaurants-- George's Oxford Village Pizza--great food, has from burgers and pizzas and subs, to fresh salads and pasta dishes and steaks---kid friendly and a variety of price ranges.

Maybe someone else can add to my list?..... In my "traveling with a young child days" this kind of info was very helpful to me. Hope it Helps!

Also...The Granville Athletic Park (where the picnic will be) is also a fabulous place - trails to walk, playground, ball fields, etc. There will be LOTS of soccer games going on that Saturday morning beginning at 9:00. Come out and watch me coach my five year olds team...if they go in the right direction it's been a good game!

I am always a day late and a dollar short, as the old folks used to say. Now we're getting to be one of the old folks. I haven't seen many of my classmates since graduation, unless I happened to take care of your grandparents at Oxford Manor or Brantwood, and I've been gone from there for 7 years. I didn't even know about the reunion until a few weeks ago, but wasn't really sure when it was. Didn't know about this website until yesterday (Thanks Donna Hart Beasley). Really enjoyed looking at it last night. Stayed up way too late looking at it all. I haven't attended a reunion yet, and I am looking foward to this one. I plan on being at the game Saturday, my son will get to see his friends (he's a junior at Webb) and I can play catch up! Not attending the dance though. Quit dancing when I quit drinking (and Andy's working Saturday night). But whole family planning on being there Sunday (God help you all). It's mine and my husband's day off from work. So see you then!

Now he is an odd ball question as the date is closing in and I am getting nervous about seeing people after 20 years. How do you do it? I mean after all this time how do you start where you left off. I don't think I have ran into any of you since 1988. A few of you on Facebook but not one in person. The more names I see the more nervous I get. I am just saying that after 20 years I am not sure that I did enough. I read some of the profiles and I am blown away. I am led back to that cafeteria, courtyard, clasroom, and I am flooded with all sorts of stuff in my big old melon. Just a little bit of cold feet I guess. Since I can't figure out to hilite 20 years of just average into a 2 minute hello. So I guess if you thinking I am making something up to sound a little more exciting you could be right. LOL

Amy Capps (Rice)

I think being a "dad" is way more than just average now-a-days. I am also blown away at all that people have done, places they have seen, etc. I am thrilled for all of my classmates. I'm still right living in Oxford, working at Stovall! But my life is great and I am happy. I think that's all most of us want to know about each other and that we wish for each other - so relax Bill! No need to think of a great story to share! We'll just be glad to see you.

09/26/08 10:46 AM #85

Debera Leonard (Hayes)

I agree with Amy. I don't think you have to have an exciting life, to have a full and happy life. I think that as long as you and your family are happy and healthy, isn't that the greatest thing any of can ask for? I think we all feel at some point, that we may not have done enough. When I feel that way I look at my daughter...;)

Thank you for the reassurance. I have thought up some good stuff though if it gets boring. I will just bring my plain old self in and that'll be that.

More ideas for people with kids for Saturday....

If you read my previous post.....On Saturday You can still use the Hix playgroud, but the gym is usualy closed. But, there are restrooms up the street at the library. I've heard that Milano's Restaurant on Williamsboro (near where the old movie theatre was) is a good restaurant and kid friendly. And yeah, I forgot about the GAP that is a nice place to go, too.

Ideas for adults on Saturday.....

Oxford has really worked to revamp it's downtown in the last several years. Though most of the old stores are gone many new stores and a coffee shop and some restaurants have sprung up in their place. (antique stores, gift shops, florists, used bookstores, etc.)

Also, Melinda Reese (class of 89) has a Merle Norman's on Hillsboro in the downtown area. They sell makeup, jewelry, handbags, clothes....She is willing to do makeup for women on Saturday for the party if anyone is interested. She just asked that you please call ahead 919-693-6500.

For kids gifts I really like Nan's, Vintage Charm, and Carolina Engravers----(have a varitey of price ranges)I haven't made it to every shop myself so maybe others can comment....

BTW--I don't work for any of these people=) I just shop there and thought some of you (or your wives) might enjoy these things as well.

Look forward to seeing everyone.

Does anyone know where to get your hair done. My wife wants to have her hair done and with two kids time is not available in Leesburg so she thought she would try Oxford. Uhm how do I say this. She is of Haitian descent so she would need a hair place that does Aftican American Hair.

Bill -
Cindy Jones - lady a work with - can recommend her sister - Leslie Hargrove - she works in JC Penny shop in Henderson - you can call her at 919-691-2399. If she cannot do it, ask her who she recommends. If she just wants a wrap or doobie she can go to Studio 10 which is also in Henderson off of Dabney DDrive beside McDonalds - $10 but get there early - no appt. necessary.

Thanks Amy now all I have to do is find out how to translate a "wrap or a dooby" to my wife. LOL. Redneck trying to tranlsate southern hairdo to French speaker. You wanna talk about a laugh a minute.
