I’m married and have two children, a three-week-old son and an 11-year-old daughter. My first career was in show business. From 1996 to 2008 I was the principal performer and, later, the artistic director of the show, STOMP. Performing on Broadway, in London's West End and in tours around the world I was blessed to do what I loved for a long time and work with some amazing talent like Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Alicia Keys and Savion Glover. When I was 35-years-old I left show business and moved back to Poughkeepsie to attend Dutchess Community College where I earned my A.S. I then transferred to Columbia University, where I graduated with a B.A. in 2013. I studied religion for a year at Princeton before accepting a position to teach science at a charter school in Bed-Stuy, NYC. Teaching has become a dream job for me. I love coming to work every day and being of service to so many families underestimated because of the color of their skin or the environment within which they live.
I believe we're all spiritual beings having a human experience. One mantra I like quite a bit is from Mohammad Ali who wrote, "You. Me. We." The guiding principle of my life comes from Matthew 25:40 in the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV):
40 And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’
