Flossie Graham Grundy
Born: April 5, 1933
Passed: August 27, 2024
Mrs. Flossie Graham Grundy, age 91, daughter of the late Mr. Frank Graham and Mrs. Ethel Washington Graham, quietly departed this life on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.
Flossie was born April 5, 1933, in Charleston, SC and raised in the Orange Grove Community of Bamberg, SC. She attended elementary school in Bamberg County and high school at Voorhees High School and Junior College in Denmark, SC. Her love of children landed her a job as the babysitter for the President of Voorhees College, Dr. Earl H. McClenney Sr. He was later named President of St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, VA and took Flossie with him. She experienced her college years as the “daughter” of the President and earned a B.S degree in Elementary Education. She later earned an MEd in Guidance Counseling from Southern Illinois University.
She began her teaching career in Bluffton, SC at Michael C. Riley Elementary School. In 1957 she met and married Charles Lee Grundy, who was a proud member of the United States Air Force. This union was blessed with two children. They enjoyed 34 years of marriage prior to the untimely death of Charles on April 7, 1991.
Flossie had a passion for teaching which led her to a 43-year career in education. Her husband’s military service afforded her the opportunity to travel extensively. Not only did she teach elementary school for more than 43 years, but she did so across the country and the world – Bluffton, North Charleston and Summerville in South Carolina; as well as Puerto Rico, Arkansas, Utah, Germany and she was even an exchange teacher in the country of Denmark. In addition, she was named “Teacher of the Year” at every school where she taught. Flossie is remembered by countless students and colleagues as a compassionate, generous and nurturing soul with a warm smile and sweet spirit. She was always willing to share knowledge and always seeking to learn and promote advancements in education. Her personal philosophy: “To learn and never be filled is wisdom. To teach and never be weary is love.”
Flossie was a pillar in her community – a true public servant through her involvement in numerous organizations, boards and her church. She was a longtime member of St. John the Beloved Catholic Church where she served as a mass coordinator, eucharistic minister, lector, sponsor and choir member. In her later years she attended St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Columbia. Flossie was a charter member of the Summerville Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She LOVED her sorority and served with pride in a variety of leadership roles – chapter president, chair and member of numerous local and regional committees. She also developed a number of programs involving scholarships, college fairs, social action, voter participation, poll watching and supporting children in need. Not only did Flossie promote community service, she lived it.
Flossie was predeceased by her husband of 34 years, Mr. Charles Lee Grundy. To this blessed union two children were born: Charles A. Grundy (Monica) of Summerville, SC, and Sharon G. Lynn (Barry) of Irmo, SC. Flossie was a very proud and devoted grandmother to her beloved grandchildren, Andre’, Lamar and Brionna Grundy. Surviving to cherish her memory are a sister, Leola Bennett of North Charleston, SC and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who are saddened by her passing.
