Dorothy and Pam,
For 20 years I have been married into a country family...my wife is from Gretna...I still hear about mowing down her strawberries thinking they were weeds...oops. We built our house on 150 acres in Franklin County (part of her mom's old home place - my wife's grandfather built with moonshine money) and they still consider me a city slicker. We have gotten rid of all our cows...to expensive to keep anymore. But I still have to cut hay and mend fencing and even get my hands dirty in the garden...I still have to ask if what I am pulling up is a weed or a vegtable. My nephew saw a bear yesterday just 200 yards from my house, and we do see too many snakes while working in the hay or wood pile.

Stephen, you must have worked the Full Service Island nearest the office. Self-Service was where I got my practice checking-out everything on my car. Great garage: I remember Wilson, and still recall some of the other faces there.

Wasn't that also called Spencer's Exxon? As a youngster I remember bouncing out of the car every time my Dad would pump his gas. Didn't know why I was doing it at the time but later realized I loved the smell of Gasoline - My guess is it grew on me.

Abercrombie has nothing on my 87 Octane, Regular Unleaded aftershave. It makes me the Passion of my Wife's Desire, she loves me for just that even to this day! (She did the same thing as a child - that's what's so funny)

Another one was Cave Spring Amoco, same side of 419 but just across Brambleton. It was owned by a very good man named Trent, I believe. He would give you gas if you needed it, just to get you home safely.

(He lost his Daugther because she ran out of gas and fell victim to a hoodlum - Bless his heart, Bless both of them)! - All staple memories from childhood.

Wonder why Mrs. Bowles didn't let us write about things like we are here? So much easier than those silly Sonnets I used to labor over all weekend. Used to believe she stayed up late at night just trying to think of ways to ruin my Life. Never understood how I could be expected to write five full paragraphs about just a few lines in a Poem. - But I guarantee there is not one bridge she drives under today where my grafitti is mispelled or words are not punctuated correctly. She probably still recognizes my syntax and will call me at home to correct it. Damn!

First job: Working for Paul Grisso on Mountain Top Orchards with Dan Gowen (77'), Dave Topping (76'), all of the Lester boys, Jeff, Scott and Paul for $2.00 an hour. In the summer, it was 60 hours a week of picking peaches, picking apples, working in greenhouses and TOMATOS! Each tomato patch had 5000 plants! Three patches that had to be planted, staked, tied and picked! To this day, I hate tomato's!!!
Steve Thompson old buddy, I can relate!
It was back breaking work but Paul Grisso taught me a work ethic that I still have today. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
Can we please change the topic to which girl looked best in a bikini? Billy Bova help me!

Reply to Rob:

By the way, Grisso's is now Valhalla Vineyards, www.valhallawines.com. Enjoy some Viognier, everything about it reminds me of Spring. Valhalla names many of their wines after Operas. Mostly grapes under vine now but still some peach trees left. A beautiful view of the Valley from up top - Gotterdammerung it!

Brian,
That's an expensive addiction now, so just stick with a little Old Spice. I had forgoten about the Amaco station on the corner. Spencers Exxon was a great place to work...I worked with Mark Wilson (class of '80)...In the evenings we would detail our cars and others(for a price).

Rob,
What was the name of the farm behind Sugar Loaf Mtn...Valley View Farms maybe...I worked there one summer, and I hated to sucker and tie tomatoes, and I told my wife that if she ever planted tomatoes, SHE would have to work them.
As to which girl looked best in a bikini - no comment and in case my wife sees this later - I must say that she looks the best to me (she would say that love has made me blind) But what can I say...I married her 20 years ago and she is more beautiful to me now than she was when we first married. By the way...I met my wife back in high school at all regional band and all regional chorus...and those are my best experiences in high school.

Linda,
How was that for sucking up to my wife???

Steve... I would rank that at Gold Medal level... BUT.. I also think that was very sweet and you can show her that I said she is lucky to have a wonderful husband like you!!
I think that you shuld post some pictures!! We would love to see you both!

PS.. I will post the address to where you can mail the $50 for that comment later on................

Today was the last day of school in Roanoke County. Graduation is Thursday at 9 AM.. No good Senior pranks this year.. What a let down!!!

Robert,
If there was a contest, I'm pretty sure that Farrah Fawcett would win the prettiest girl in a bikini. At least she's the one poster on the majority of closet doors of the male members of the class.

Does anyone remember the name of the club that was out past Tanglewood Mall? I used to go there with coworkers after getting off work at the Mall. Was it Copperfields? And wasn't there a Pharoahs pizza or sosmething like that around there. I remember really tasty square pizzas.

Betsy, Congratulations! What an adorable grandson. Being a grandma is the best. Does he live near you? I thought that being a mom was the best thing that ever happened to me. It was truly what I was meant to do on this earth.......but then....I became a grandma. It is impossible to explain the connection and the love. It is just the best thing ever.

Parker, Caldwell is right, gas is too expensive, try magic markers, my fav!
I remember that guy at the Amoco, he was really nice, Amoco was the first "credit card" ($100 limit) I ever had so I always got my gas there.

Two of the cutest guys I remember are no longer with us, Mustian and Fleshman (rest well). Lots of our guys were cute, many due to their great personalities;)...nice save??
Personally, I always liked smiles and some of the cutest smiles IMO were Vic Brrrr, Minnick, Case and Roush. Anderson...he was so cute I married him!

Valhalla Vinyards, beautiful place, I actually designed and installed the cabinetry up there.
Copperfields?? Was that where The Library is now on the backside of the King's Inn (Girlz Girlz).

Stephen, what a great story and very similar to mine, even the moonshine part, ever had pawpaw moonshine? Tastes like bananas!

Betsy, CONGRATS!! What a beautiful baby.

While I'm at it Happy Father's Day to the guys this weekend, suck up that affection, you deserve it!

Wasn't Copperfield's the club where Barnes & Noble is now behind Tanglewood. What was that disco club out where the strip joint now is on Franklin Rd. by the mexican restaraunt. I used to dance at that one (before the strip joint of coarse) and also the Shariton and Mariott by the airport, plus The Elephant Walk at the Holiday Inn Tanglewood and The Kings Inn downtown.

While I was in the service - before I got old, gray and fat - I even danced in a cage at a club in Chicago every week on ladies night. I couldn't imagine doing something like that now. My wife and kids probably can't imagine me EVER doing that.

Copperfields was indeed on Franklin Road.. The building was torn down and now there is some type of medical office building there.. The owner/manager went to CS (don't rememeber his name) as did the DJ who was Mark Wilson. Mark was a graduate of CS from about 1975. Mark passed away in 1989 from liver trouble related to way to much partying..

The 52th graduating class of Cave Spring showed their stuff today as they finally made it!!! Seemed strange to sit there and watch them up there and swear that there is no way it has been 30 years since we did it.

Congrats to all of you that have 2008 graduates..The Knight (David Kaplan) spoke and gave congrats to the parents as well as the students.. I had to laugh, thinking how right he was.

OK! No freakin way I can leave this one alone!
Steve Thompson dancing in a cage, in a bar, in Chicago! Chicago! My home for the past 13 years.
Steve. Buddy. Reach into your wallet, pull out your official "GUY" card and mail it to me. Some day, I will return it. Maybe!
There has to be a photo somewhere.

I remember the smoking block and the motley crowd that hung out there smoking Marboro and Kools. I smoked a pipe (since I borrowed my grandads corncob at 14). I figured to have some fun and went out with my stylish candian briar. It took about ten minutes for the principal to come out and sniff the content of my pipe! I forget whether it was "Elton Jim" Daughtridge or Mr. Life (of the party). I was good with smoking crew for a day or so after that.
Does anyone remember this?

All in all, I think we under estimated our principals. I wouldn't say they were role models or heros to me, but I respected them.

My heros were my Dad and my brother Mike. The Marines are an elite force like no other. My dad became a marine during the Korean conflict. My brother became one in his junior summer. He was a little guy, who barely made the wieght(by eating bananas from Roanoke to Richmond. He had always been picked on because he was small. When people realied that he had the guts to be a Marine, he earned respect. He worked hard with recruiters, enlisted several other marines and did other work. His reward? Special permission to wear dress blues to the Prom.
Of course his service didn't stop there, he taught Marines to use radios at infantry school. Then he was sent to Camp Fuji, Japan. His unit lost 11 men to a fire that destroyed thier base. Mike helped carry an injured Marine to safety. In Okinowa, he stood his ground against several angry Japanese Nationals, while his friend escaped injury, he was beaten pretty badly. He's one tough Marine. In this time of war, we need to remember to kind of poeple that are out their for us. tough guys like my dad and my brther.

I joined an elite mountaineering unit of the Vermont Army Guard, so I wasn't a complete disappointment to my Dad and Mike. Mike even joined my unit wnen he left the
Marines. When the first gulf war came, my commander would not release me to volunteer. "If anyone goes, we go as a unit," he said. When the second Iraq war came, the Docs couldn't pass me on the physical and suggested that I retire. I lost a mentor in Afganistan and four men from my unit in Iraq.

We should all respect and honor the Soldiers and Marines that are trying to rebuild Iraq. They bring freedom to a land that has known little of it.

Freedom Isn't Free.

Congratulations Betsy! Beautiful baby!
Copperfields? I waited tables there summer of 1980 (after the previous two summers earning my waitress stripes at Pappy's and Pizza Inn--loved the hats--not!) I was scheduled during the lunch shift--I think the management was trying to make Copperfields the hip place for the business crowd to lunch. Turns out, nobody ever came in there for lunch. They always played the same Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes tape (good stuff) and we bored wait staff just danced our hearts out on the wood floor every day! I left after about three weeks for the more lucrative Ground Round--loved that popcorn (and no hats!)

Happy Father's Day to the dads!

Thanks all on the nice responses about my new grandchild. I have to come here and read about the old days after rocking my grandchild on the back porch - OMG - I am my mother and I swore in high school this would never happen. Best part of being a grandmother - my son finally appreciates me!! Took a while but well worth the wait!

Ok - now I will catch up. My first job was working as a counselor in training at Camp Va. Jaycee. I was only 15 but I do remember when the kids left on Friday I went with a bunch of older counselors to the Kings Inn every weekend. I cannot believe they let me in.

Dorothy-FYI...The correct spelling for Vic's last name was Bbbbb, I believe..not Brrrr. You'll have to check with Robert Swope and Hensley Woods for verification though...Just thought you should know.

Betsy-Congrats, girlfriend!!!Beautiful baby, I know that your proud! Give him a big hug and kiss from the Class of '78!!

Doug Settles

OUCH!....I just realized that I misspelled "your" in my last post after grilling Dorothy about her spelling....I believe "you're" is correct. Mrs. Goodall would have fried my ass for that one.....She never liked me anyway. I think it's 'cause I skipped her class a "time or two"...The smoking block was just more fun. Especially with Billy Miller and the bluegrass band jammin'..Anyone remember that?....

First jobs, ugh. I worked at long john silvers on brambleton road. HATED IT. But needed the money. Well one nice benefit. When the assistant manager closed, he would let us have a beer or two. Those days. Betsy. Lovely grandchild. I remember at Cave Spring also thinking about having kids. I thought also they would never think I was a good parent since I didn't care for mine at the time. But life does change things. Thanks Betsy for this page, love to read the comments that our fellow classmates leave. I think I will make it to our reunion. Want to see everyone. Thanks Mr. Haskins for your work, many thanks,. I have been away from Roanoke too long to remember places everyone mentions here. I guess I will need some extra time to look around Rke. when I make it there.

Oh yes, Thanks Linda Grubb for all your comments about our old high school. Have things really changed all that much since we were there? Fill me in on all the changes if you ever have time. I know from reading here that you are busy.

Thanks every one for all your comments.. KEEP them coming.

Linda are you sure you don't work for the Chamber of Commerce?! Yes Doug, I remember the band playing out on the smoking block. I liked hanging out there too but I sure don't know what the school board was thinking back then! You're right about Mrs. Goodall too!Hey Betsy, didn't I go to that camp with you?! I vaguely remember us singing Fire by Ohio Players all the time while we were there.

06/13/08 11:39 PM #229

Betsy Crow

Yes Laurie - you came to visit me there and I am sure we were singing Ohio Players and many other things! Actually remember spending the summer listening to Springsteen's 10 Ave. Freeze-Out. Jan Smith worked there with me too. Wild summer and my first summer away from home.

Great looking guys at CSHS? Lots in our class but I remember the "senior" crushes we had as sophomore girls.

I will help change the conversation now - how about Senior Skip Day? Great day spent at twin falls. My mother wrote me a note and would not lie for me and it said "please excuse Betsy's absence as she was at the lake". They didn't excuse it - they actually gave us a choice of punishment - 5 days detention or 3 days suspension. Were they kidding?? I wasn't stupid - I took 3 more days out of school!

Back home late last night after a whirlwind week of work that drug me to way too many places. CONGRATS go out to Betsy, God never blessed me with any children, so no chance for grandchildren, I guess he looked back at me and my life and figured "not in a million years" does this guy get kids!!! Oh well, the dog and cat will have to do. Robbie, ALL CS girls looked good to me, bikini or not! Oh, and people, please don't bring your daughters to the reunion in bikinis. I will stare at them, my better half claims at the beach that I stare at the younger girls. I guess I don't realize it, but I have the bruise marks on my ribs where she apparently catches me doing it and pokes me with her pointy elbow! I despise this aging thing with a passion. Clubs in 'ol Roanoke in our days, well, I SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN IN THEM! But, I remember good times at GD Graf's behind Tanglewood, Copperfields on Franklin Rd., Kings Inn downtown, every DIVE bar on Brambleton Ave., darn government, was their fault, letting us punks drink at 18, yea, I'll blame them!!! Once again, y'all have great memories........
