Happy Father`s Day to you all....
I spent the day with my Dad,I helped him plant tomatoe plants and listened to his old stories. He was hard on me when I was growing up but he has always been my rock. The one man in my life I know I can count on.I guess I now realize that he was the way he was when I was a teenager becaused he loved me. Funny how things come full circle.

I must have taken more than one Senior skip day. I thought we went to Twin Falls?! I have pictures from that day. Alan, Foster, and I think Bill Linquist were there. Don't remember how many times we went to the cliffs at the lake but I remember the rope swing. Have pictures from there too. Can't wait to look at all of them together. I anticipate LOTS of laughing when I get to Roanoke! Happy Father's Day to all the dads. I'm still blessed to have mine at a healthy 82 years old!

Happy Father's Day - I almost forgot is was father's day. Mel and Drew are in New Mexico backpacking and my own father died 7 years ago. He was far too young and I miss him terribly. I know he is in a better place.

My oldest, Drew, graduated on May 29th. I added a picture to my profile. He is headed to VMI this fall. He wanted to return to the south and is interested in intelligence and languages. I think VMI is a good choice. He is very bright, but has not applied himself since we moved to Pennsylvania. :) Did anyone from our class attend there?

Happy Fathers day everyone (56 minutes ago)...I lost my father 12 years ago and he was way, way too young as well...he was always there for me offering advice only if I asked, at every game and even most practices etc. He was my biggest Fan. Those of you who still have your Dad be sure to cherish every moment you can with him because those of us that don't know what I mean.

Rob Anderson...do you still shoot black powder muzzle loaders? Do you remember when we went to the rifle range in Garden City to shoot with your Dad?

Happy Father's Day to all the dads. It was such an awesome day here. Its late at night so now I'm reflecting on how lucky I am to still have my dad. He makes me crazy and I complain sometimes but then I realize that someday I'll wish he was still making me crazy. All six kids were here today and amazingly I actually got a picture of all of us together. We used to take one every year but its been a while. I am also reflecting on fathers day about the society that we now live in. It makes me so sad sometimes. I have 8 grandchildren with number 9 on the way and only one of them(including the unborn one) lives with both parents. What is going on in this crazy world? We live in a world where it is the exception not the rule for your parents to be together. Sorry, I'll get off my soap box for a while.

As a father...let me say thanks to everyone for wishing all us dads a "happy father's day".

I spent the whole weekend with my family: Friday playing golf and swimming with my kids, Sat. we went ice staking for my daughter's 17th birthday (yes ice skating in June), Sun. (as usual) we all went to church "as a family", then grilled out and sat down to dinner "as a family" including both of my parents and my father-in-law (we lost my mother-in-law 4 years ago). We also played Bridge Sunday when we weren't stuffing our faces.

Does anyone play Bridge. We would love to find some other couples to play. My parents taught us the game last year and now we play every chance we get.

Also, if there are any golfers out there and want to get together, then please let me know. We are members of Great Oaks CC in Floyd and I would gladly set up a tee time. I'm just a weekend hacker so don't expect much compitition. I am teaching my 15 year old son to play now, and he'll be beating me before too long.

Mr. Caldwell! That was real black powder too! Not the synthetic crap they make today. How we kept from killing each other I have no idea. "Oh yea, pour some more powder in and put two or three balls on top! It will shoot!" It would shoot all right. Fire out the end of the barrel three feet long with so much smoke you were choking to death. Were you with me the time I was experimenting with pistol loads and the single shot pistol just disappeared out of my hand? It was laying on the ground 10 feet behind me after I shot it.
Somehow, I still have all my fingers!

Rob...yes I remember. I had a nice deep cough for a while after the extra powder, extra balls episode. I also remember the pistol exiting your hand as I was standing behind you as it went flying by my head. What a riot, we were 10 feet tall and bullet proof back then, huh?

Thanks Billy... I couldn't remember the name of the club behind Tanglewood...GD Graffitis(spelling?)

Skip days (yes plural)...I skipped way to much. I went to the cliffs at the lake. I got arrested there once ('82?)for trespassing, distruction of private property (campfire) and contributing to a minor (my girlfriend class of '82?). I got a suspended 10 days in jail for that one. On her senior skip day we went to both the cliffs and twin falls.

Paul Harris - I used to work at Longjohn Silvers ("Seafood Silver's Longjohn Shop") ...we used to drink the beer-on-tap (Strohs?) when we were cleaning up. We would also trade food with the workers at Pizza Hut. Did you ever have to make that &%*^$% cole slaw

To Greg – and others: (sorry it's so long)
As most of us with brothers or sisters know … We were not the best of buddies most of the time – I think we spent more time trying to prove who was the 'Top Dog' - none of this Team stuff it there was always some war going on between us – and I sure that most of you with a brother or sister can relate – As with my two now … well it’s no different today than it was 35 years ago.
After a busy weekend putting on a Girl scouts event 'bridging/flying up' with movie night Saturday and then all day at a pool party for someone's 1st birthday – and today it was a Farm Field trip day for some 60+ 1st graders to be. In the am and then back to work. Where I saw Greg's note on the Message forum.
Well when I read it today (Posted: 6/13 01:50am) I was taken back by any one who would call me 'there hero' – But, as then opened 3 emails as I start work, two one had that same word in it – Not a word that I feel fits me... for I could never see me being ‘Someone’s Hero’. So, what is a Hero to me …. Well the one time I was called someone's Hero was about 15+ years ago. I was in line at store check out and I turn around and without even thing about it I reach and got it, what you may ask A helling balloon that was just about to fly into some high lights some 30 feet over head. So, I tied a loop and gave it back the the little girl, about 3 maybe 4 years old, put it around her wrist and told her to hold on to her balloon and she let her dreams fly high – OK.. as I turned around to go about my way she said, ‘’’Mr. Are you a Hero? … What do you say ?? No, A hero is someone special who you look up to and some day you want to be like. Her reply was simple, 'You’re my hero today…' OK, Us hero like to keep things just between us OK – So, let’s keep this our secret OK… I got to go.., she said thanks!! As her mom asked who was that and what did he want? As I walked a way I herd her say he’s my secret super hero and he’s needed somewhere else now…
That's the only time felt like a hero OK, – But, to have my brother call me 'his hero' that just feels odd and out of place. Greg and I spend a lot of time trying to out do each other – and I guess that all changed one day when I picked him up at VA Tech on my way home from the Marine base in NC. That when we looked at each other and realized one thing – for the past few year we had both had the same wish – to be like the other … Yes, More like the other. . . what I wanted was to be in good college, and he said, about the same thing about himself – What a change that was - so we can be each other Heros - for we can never have too many hero here OK. So, be someone Hero today!! And no one needs to know who you are.
Let me make a correction or two – Greg – there was no ‘Special Permission’ granted for the prom ... so I hope the statue of limitations has expired on that one. To wear dress blues to the Prom, that was a deal made in exchange for a Date – Thanks to Linda Clague. Who I asked out and set up with Sgt. Don N. In fact the Marine Sgt later made sure that the Yearbook did not print any of the photos of us.
As to the our losses at Mt. Fuji Japan (19 Oct 1979 Typhon Tip) 2 died that day some 13 died before we left Mt Fuji in Jan, Most of us escapes with little or nothing... just glad to still be alive, our Heros there there A.K.A the Japan Security Corps who took us in after the fire - and the guy who found me a pair of old shoes from a trash bin, for I had left in baer feet. I had given my shirt to the guy who was about to hit the showers and only had his towel, Yes, we had little but still marched head up and over to the there base theater where we called home for the nite just glad to be warm.
Hay for me as a Marine to later get asked to Join the 10th Mountain Company (Vermont Army Guard) was a honor for me, For they are the Top Dogs for Ski Trained units – Thanks to you and the rest of your team Greg!

If by any chance any of you are interested in seeing CS play football... Sept 19th Cave Spring is away to Patrick Henry. PH has a brand new stadium, there at the school. Due to the parking, if you are intersted in going, I suggest you get there early. I have not seen the stadium yet, but I understand it is amazing. Kickoff is at 7:30.
Tickets last year were $6. No promises on if there is an increase or not....We had a good many younger players last year that looked promising. So maybe it will be a good year!!!

Linda,
I don't know what I'm going to do this weekend...much less Sept 19

Naw Linda, that is ok. I never understood the big PH/CS rivalry 30 years ago and I can only imagine how bad it could be now.
The reunion is the following night though, I guess some that are in town may want to check it out, but rest up, we are going to party Saturday night!

You're right Settles, I thought that might be it but didn't know how to spell it and I got my laptop wet trying to sound it out! Wonder where Swope and Hensley Woods are anyway?

Doug, is your band going to play the reunion? Wingo said you still played music together. You ought to at least do a guest performance, that would bring back some memories for alot of us! Loved your Cat Scratch Fever!

I think I had more than 1 Sr. skip day too...I think the official one was spent riding around with the girls and a cooler in the B210, not sure if we ever made it to the falls or not??

Betsy, Hoping for dress or business casual at the reunion, getting too old to fall off of heels due to adult beverage consumption, I could break a hip ya know? Guess I could bring my hum-around.

Who were your heroes at Cave Spring? Were they teachers or staff, other students, or maybe parents (yours or some one elses)?

I believe that heroes make us want to be who we become. My greatest fear for our young people is that they have so many anti-heros in their culture.

Heroes... My Dad is a great Hero. I love my Dad, and we are uncommonly close. Taught me how to fish... Work smart. Incredible patience. He's a humble man with a gentle smile... Does the right thing even when no one else is looking. He's boosted me up a little bit higher than I could ever reach alone. Still throws a sledgehammer harder than I do. My Dad, well, I surely love my Dad and invite him most everywhere I go - right now we're all on Vacation down here in Key West having a blast together! Named my Son after him, Charlie Robert Parker, III... I love the sound of calling for my Son. God made him right for me. I've always prayed for longevity, and God still Blesses me many times over. We'll celebrate my Dad's 80th, July 7th. Pray the Lord his Soul to keep!

Heros, heck, all of y'all are my heros!!! Today is a great day for me, it's the first day of summer(and it is cloudy and storming at my house all day 6 blocks from the beach, boo hoo), and it's my birthday, 48, feel 28, probably look 68! My mom went up to Roanoke today, she lives in Charlotte, NC, for her Jefferson High class reunion, 50th! And my youngest sister called me on her way to Myrtle Beach for a week, she lives in Raleigh, NC. Brings back memories, oh sweet memories, good memories, just like all of y'all, good memories. Think I will KICK IT OUT a little tonight! Be good, be right, don't let the sand fleas bite!!!

Happy Birthday - Bill to the others with summer birthdays,

Sorry, to here that the man who shot Richard Fleshman was found dead, sounds like he had troubles, he just could not deal with.
Let's look forward to Sept. This is the weekend my Mom went back for her 55th !! (Cranston High Reunion) she said something about most of the good ones are still here and they're all not dead. Looking forward to see what you guys there come up with - More often it's the people who make the party and not place, Hope to make it this time (my 1st) see you in Sept.

Question for the group. Can anyone name any of the music that was played for our cap and gowning ceramony. (me a college grad and still cannot spell.) Just a question for thought.

Happy Belated Birthday Billy, how many pairs of socks did you get?
Oh, and I wanted to let you know that there are alligators on the golf courses at Myrtle Beach too now!
Guess it's that global warming thing.
We oughta have them in Roanoke in another few months.

Paul...I only remember "Pomp and Circumstance" by Sir Edward Elgar...that Freshman music appreciation/fine art class requirement at JMU finally paid off huh?

Happy birthday Billy but why do you need socks down there in Nawlins? You don't even need to wear them when dining at Antoines, Arnauds or Galitoires.

Did someone mention gators, we have those in our back yard all the time. What is really stupid is that some people actually feed them. Then they later wonder what happened to their little puppy or cat. Oh not to forget their is the college football team the florida gators. Anaimal control has a field day catching gators that come close to folks homes. But that is life here in south florida, that and hurricanes.

I remember "Pomp and Circustances", a long line for the old sheepskin. Especially since I was close to the front and we had beer in the trunk of the Matador. Waiting for the rest of you nearly killed me. The traffic jam leaving the place was long also. Course it made going back to the trunk easier.

I remember more of the baccalaureat ceremony. Grady Nutt was hilarious. Every now and then one of his lines comes back to me in a situation and they are still funny. No one around me knows why I'm laughing. They still don't get it when I tell them. Nobody up here grew up in the South and I've lost my accent. Good old Grady grew up in a Nutt house and it was a good thang!
