Music... Cap and gowning ceremony.?... Sorry, I walked out after my trip across the stage to give blood (my type was in need) - Something we all should try to do this summer - I am no longer allowed to, wish I could, - So, I like to make the challenge that we get 50 pints from the class of 78 between now and Sept.

Thanx everybody for the happy b'days, I wish I could make the days and years run in reverse for me, but I can't. I DO need socks during the week days when working, and I can never find any that match in the morning because I don't actually wake-up and realize that I am alive for several hours after getting out of bed. Gotta be the darn getting old thing! At least my better-half gave me new flip-flops for my b'day, they are better than socks, probably should just start wearing them with my coats and ties, living in Mississippi, I don't think anyone would really care! This time of year I only require one thing, really, AIR CONDITIONING!!!

Paul Harris

Mr. Bova,
I know what you mean about AC. I can't live without it. Congrats on your birthday. I know about flip flops, love'em. I do remember one thing, driver's ed. in summer school, short pants, tee shirt and flip flops, and not hitting cones in the parking lot for the driving course. Was so happy that good old CSHS had air conditioning and summer school. I don't think I could have waited till school started to get my drivers card, with the green backing.
Brain, I am so glad you still have your dad, mine passed a few years back and to this day I feel I need to call him and thank him or ask him a question.
Linda, do they still have summer school at CSHS, I know it is a dumb question, but just wondering.

Paul.. They now rotate the summer school sessions so that they are not in the same school every summer.. This summer it is at Hidden Valley. I was told that they wasted it at CS but the new principal did not want it there.....

BTW.. I was by the new electronic sign today and it is showing a notice about the our reunion and the one for the class of 1988........

Billy this re-occurring theme of the socks is cracking me up but I'm getting concerned. Do they not sell socks in Mississippi?!

I remember summer school at Cave Spring. I took drivers ed the summer between 9th and 10th grades. How about all the gross graphic car wreck films. I still ended up racing a few cars later. Raced a few motorcycles to. I only hit the pavement once, but that was enough. Now my son wants a bike. He's not ready for it yet, but I wasn't either at that age. Thank God that I didn't get one in my teen years!! I'm going to hold him off as long as possible. Now, I want a touring bike (no more racing for me).

Linda,

Cute message, but it seem like DasYaVoo.

All,

Have a wonderfull Independence Day!!!!

America is still the BEST.
And that is in large part due to the sacrifices of our fine men and women in uniform - both present and past.
And remember to thank a veteran.

God bless the USA!!!

Steve,

Thank you for honoring our Vets. In my time in the Guard, I knew many combat veterans. Many were from Vietnam and now most of my old unit are Iraq Vets. I'm glad so many people like yourself know how special these people are. It comes around to this, people like you are what makes America great and that's what makes being an American soldier the greatest job in the world.

Cave Spring did a pretty good job of teaching us to be Americans.

Greg,

I am very proud to say that I have also served. I had 4 interesting years ('85-'89) in the Navy on destroyers. Unlike some of our military brothers, I did enjoy my time in. Especially when we were in any port other than homeport or when we were at-sea. Because of the Navy, I can say that I have literally been around the world - to the Persian Gulf from San Diego and to the Persian Gulf from Norfolk. At that time Iran was considered the "bad guy". Some of the best places that I have been: Australia, islands of the south Pacific, Thailand, Philipines, Italy, France, Spain, Greece. On my second tour in the Persian gulf I was medivac'd (Double hernia from lifting some equipment in the engine room). I spent 3 months in Naples, Italy recovering from that surgery: drinking, laying out in the sun, drinking, playing golf, drinking, swimming, and did I mention drinking. I do miss the comradery(SP) of my shipmates. I'm sure that any vet will say that the freindships/experinces while in the service are some of the best of their lifetime.

I would - without a doubt - do it all over again!!!

To quote the song:

"I'd gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today...cause there ain't no doubt I love this land...God bless the USA"

Your vet-brother-in-arms,
Steve

Steve,

ANavy guy, huh, Well I worked at the Naval Shipyard at Norfolk on a Coop job for a few quarters. It was a great job. Nothing on this planet is as impressive as an aircraft carrier (the IKE and the America were in). I could go on about that experience if any one els wants me too. My group in the Combat Systems Office was in charge of Anti Submarine warfare-torpedoes on the subs and ASROC rocjets on the frigates and destroyers. The one thing I learned on the submarines is that there are two kids of ships, sumarines and targets. ON the desrtoyes I learned that seagulls are flying rats.

Drive on, and thanks for your world tour!

By the way, my brother Mike thinks the Navy exists to get the Marines where they need to go, and he's probably right. Bloody sea going bellhop.

Who all, besides me, is signing up to play golf on the day of the reunion. I haven't played at Humting Hills since high school. If I remember right - it is a tough little coarse - very narrow and hilly with alot of blind shots. I am looking forward to playing with all who sign up.

We used to go ice skating on one of the ponds there, though I don't know where it is in relation to the coarse.

I used to launch model rockets off the fairways near my house. The grounds keepers hated that.

All this talk of all things military has made me think of the 1970's. Well, not really, but does anyone remember these very popular trends?

mood rings? streaking? pet rocks? mooning?

07/21/08 04:45 PM #270

Dorothy Harmon (Mabe)

I had a mood ring, I think they are back in style now. Mine was always green or blue but can't remember what mood that meant, hopefully good.
Mooning and streaking were hilarious trends, so unviolent. I didn't do any streaking in HS...(wait, does skinny dipping at night count?)
Mooning, I'd still be doing that if I didn't think I'd give someone a heartattack!
Reunion in T-60 days!

* mood rings – Never owned one but I do recall seeing them at every five and dime checkout counter in Roanoke in the 70s – they are still around I am sure – Happy’s probably has a good deal on them right NOW!

* Streaking- Now this was a fad I could get behind (pun intended) – again – never as an active participant - but there were even streakers at my baseball games at that old baseball field at Cave Spring Jr High. Always dudes though – bags over their heads. I also recall the famous streaker that appeared on the Academy Awards show in circa 74. David Nevin was presenting as the streaker flashed America. Ray Stevens had a huge radio hit with “The Streak” too.

* Pet rocks- JC Penny probably still has pet rocks on their discount tables at Tanglewood. I do remember that – just tons of unsold pet rocks. Somebody must have bought them though.

* Mooning- Wildly popular amongst the male species in Star City– Lord knows why.

I will confess....I was guilty of streaking during and after high school days. I almost got caught by the cops in Norfolk at ODU.

Mooning.... we have probably all done that and just won't admit it.

How would we refugees of the seventies explain streaking to our kids? Was there a political statement involved, or was it just some strange artifact of the "free love" part of the sixties that we were too young for? Whichever, I think we should think very deeply about this before trying to bring this particular fad back at our rapidly advancing age. On the other hand, If Billy has matching clean socks, we might talk him in to trying it at the reunion. It would be one of those "ice-breaker" moments.

I'm really enjoying the chat, and I am very much looking forward to the reunion. Great kudos to Betsy for getting all this rolling along.

Ok - I had a pet rock. My mom didn't like animals so that is what I ended up with. Maybe streaking and mooning went up when the childhood obesity rate went up -just a thought :).

Ok - it's time to get serious about the reunion guys!! We need pictures for something we are working for. Good pictures - sorry clean pictures. I think Laurie has one on someone rolling a joint so probably not what we are looking for - although she swears she was just taking the picture. Please scan and send to me or John Wilkes or send in the mail and I can scan and return the originals.

Ok Betsy, I guess I`ll have to send you some pictures and you can be the judge.....
I know everyone has been talking about the past and things we used to do but what about now???? Any funny stories out there from anyone???? I really don`t have any but maybe someone has something to add. Have a great weekend!

07/25/08 09:54 PM #276

William Bova

I can't remember having any of this stuff, although many people, including my parents, would probably claim that I did, in fact, have not one, but many, pet rocks. AND THEY WERE ALL IN MY HEAD!!! Pictures, hummmmm, lets see, pictures, hmmmmmmm, lets see, this will require more thought and another glass of wine.........

Fads of the 70's

Clackers. ("...you'll put yer eye out, kid!!" -- okay, that was from Christmas Story with the Red Rider BB Gun, but kinda fits clackers, too, methinks)

Never 'got' the pet rock thing, but did get mildly sucked in to the "Tomagotchie" (or however you spell it) craze in the 90's.

"Add-a-Bead" necklaces.

Corduroy Levi's.

"Gee, Your Hair Smells Terrific" Shampoo.

The "Keep On Truckin'" dude.

Beanbag chairs.

Air Hockey.

In regards to Betsy asking for photos. I am trying to remember who took photos on a regular basis. I remember a guy named Jim Bowen or Bowden. I don't see him in our 1978 yearbook and I am not sure he was in our class. Everything was Black and White in those days and I honestly cannot remember who was always taking the photos. Can anybody help with this?
I know somewhere there is a storage box with thousands of our photos, most of which were probably never printed or enlarged. With todays technology we can print all of those 35mm B&W photos in a matter of seconds.
Talking about fads, all I had a Kodak pocket 110 instamatic camera. Remember those with the big foursided flash, sitting on top of the removable stem?

okay Betsy, I'll send some pictures and they are all clean! I'm not sure why I have the joint rolling picture but I wasn't participating! Still trying to locate the Myrtle Beach pictures. As for the other comments, I never had a pet rock but I do remember them. Saturday Night Fever was big too. I think Jeanne and I knew almost every dance in the movie! How cool were we?! Loved going to The Thunderbird. Weren't we all underage?!

I had to laugh at the Add-a-Bead necklaces... I had a friend who would give me the beads for birthdays and Christmas. I had gotten several pearl ones and added them in too.. We were at the movies at Tanglewood one night in the winter when a friend I had not seen in a long time walked in.. She walked over and hugged me and got her sweater caught on my necklace. When she pulled back, beads went flying.. I think that we found all but about 3 of them.. I had about 30 on there!!! I actaully was going thur a box packed on the top shelf in my closet about 2 months ago and I found the necklace.. Maybe some polishing will bring it back to life.. I have some pics somewhere here from school.. I'll search and try to get them to Betsy....... have a great weekend!!!!1
