Kelly Houston
Thanks, Barry. I'll give you the cash for your compliment tomorrow. Har har...just kidding people!
So...I have 10 days off until I start my new home health adventure and what am I doing? Sitting around being a wimpelina. My dad called us "wimpelinas" when we kids were acting wimpy. Shannon got a kick out of that earlier. Anyhoo....
I have a story.
Yesterday, I went into a patient's room to take her for treatment and she started to talk about her nephew in West Virginia that recently had a kidney transplant. She got all into the organ donation discussion, which brings me to my funny little story.
A few years ago, my step-daughter, Kelli, was digging through my purse for money while I was driving her to the movies. She came upon my driver's license and asked me what "organ donor" meant. We had about 10 minutes to discuss this, and so I went on with an abbreviated version about organ donation and how important it is, and how it saves so many lives, and it could save hers if she ever needed it.
So Kelli had a million questions, of course, about the surgeries and the benefits, etc. She was pretty freaked out to learn that other organs that are more increasingly donated now are eyes and skin. She asked me, "So you can donate your eyes and your skin?" Certainly. The corneas of the eyes can make blind people see again. The skin can save the life of a burn victim. "So, they will take your eyes out?!" Yes. "So, they'll skin you?!" Well, they will just shave portions of skin from certain parts of your body like your thighs and other large parts; they won't just take all of it like you don't have a face anymore or anything.
Well, I thought I had her sold until I looked over in the passenger seat and she was looking kind of weirded out. I asked her if she was okay and she said, "Kelly, if you donate your eyes...how in the HECK are you going to be able to SEE to DRIVE?!?"
I failed to mention that I would be DEAD when I donated my organs. Ooops.
Think about organ donation, friends. It's great stuff. And you won't feel a thing!
