Carla --- I am so sorry that you have done a great thing about purchasing these hoodies for people, and then they don't have the common courtesy to send you the money that they owe. I am sure your life long desire is not to wear a different hoodie everyday of the week. So, I hope that people start sending in their money to you soon. I guess for future purchases, everybody needs to send in their money first before their order is considered an actual "order". I am so sorry!!!

Well, I am also so jealous. My husband is right in the middle of the parade for the Phillies. It's odd. I really never watched baseball until the Phillies made it to the World Series. Don't get me wrong, I am not a band wagon fan, but I have to admit that I am now enjoying the sport more than I ever have. So, I guess when it comes to the sport of Baseball, I am a Philly fan. :)

Okay, I haven't heard from my husband all day long. I heard that the trains are absolutely jammed packed and I have a strange feeling that he is NOT going to make it back in time for Halloween. The thing that sucks is that he has the camera!!!!!!!!!! So, I guess I will step up to the plate and take all 4 kids trick-or-treating by myself. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope that everyone has a safe and happy Halloween. Please post pictures for those of you who dress up. Speaking of which, what happened to Greg?

Chris A~Sounds like fun tonight. You will be a good looking couple. Be sure to put pictures on here. We are going to our friends house tonight or I'd head over to Raleigh & join you. They live in a neighborhood where everyone goes all out.

Kelly~Are you wearing your black Halloween T-shirt? It is warm here today. I did not even have to wear a jacket with mine.

Have fun tonight!

Jolee Clarke (Preston)

Shannon~ Yes, I got your message...will post ASAP...

Carla~ So sorry...been there, done that, got the hoodie...no pun intended...well, yeah..I did. Our class ican be the most giving, nurturing, caring class, but can tend to lead us awry. We will definitely plan things differently...

Turbo~ Have fun tonight...good to see you at lunch, as always. You are a hoot and I love catching up with you!

Everybody else~ Have fun, be careful, and get pics! Me and Johnny are staying home and fighting over who has to get up off their butt to answer the door and hand out candy. I did find the COOLEST Hannah Montana candy...love it!

Hope to get out on the motorcycles tomorrow...too pretty not to!

Hey everyone hope you all had a good night. Sorry I've been missing in action the last couple of days. I just got back from shooting a new film. This one was in Alaska. It's called Eskimo Pie: The Sarah Palin Story!

Kristen WB - I think I may be able to get you that part you were asking me about. Shannon is in the running too though!

Stef - I see the cops on horses quite a bit from my office window. They hang out around Elmwood Park quite a bit. They are incredible animals. Oh and I think I grabbed the wrong hoodie when I left your place the other day. I'll swap them back during our next appointment.

Seriously though, I Hope you guys had fun at lunch. This was a busy week for me but maybe I can make it out next week.

Congrats to the Phillies fans. I'm an Astros fan myself but I alway pull for the National League.

Don't forget to set your clocks back and test your smoke alarms.

Carla if you are at the point that you are going to start selling off the stuff you have I'll ask my mom if she wants a sweatshirt. She always likes that kind of stuff.

Happy November everyone! Thanksgiving will be here soon.

Greg~ Glad you made it through the filling...I mean, filming. What a tragic movie that must be...

Waiting on Mr. JP to wake up this morning so we can get our butts out of here and go on a ride on the Harley! Too pretty today not to! We had 6 trick or treaters last night...pathetic..but the church up the road from our house does a "trunk or treat" extravaganza....and even though Franklin County is sometimes considered "backwards" I have the UTMOST respect for the police and sherrif's department...they had flares out on the road, with a town cop car with its lights on, and a uniformed officer in front of the church to monitor traffic coming in and out. It also slowed down the 55mph traffic in front of the house. That department knows how to take care of its town. It is one of the few remaining police departments around here that still block off the intersections at all street lights for a funeral procession. They have a uniformed officer standing at attention as the processional goes by. A truly MOVING experience when you are in the processional and it is someone you love being buried.

Okay, so off to do some work around the house...I'm posting a survey to see who wants to have a slumber party in Raleigh...girls only...I guess...

11/01/08 11:31 AM #1148

Jolee Clarke (Preston)

Shannon, Bear with me...I am trying to load the survey and I get all the fields of questions keyed in, save it...but then when I try to access it to take it..there are no fields to answer the questions in...just a page of questions! Hang in!

Carla Boyd (McCabe)

Greg...what size ya want? I think Susie is getting one for her Dad. Anyone needing more hoodies, just email me about what size you need...I have some t-shirts too. I had ordered some extras anyway...because it made us be able to get the better price to order more.

11/01/08 08:49 PM #1151

Carla Boyd (McCabe)

Also...for anyone wanting to pick up a shirt...I am planning to be at Mill Mountain Coffee and Tea in Botetourt on Thursday night from 7:15 til 7:50.
If you would like to meet me there to pick up...just email me and let me know you are coming.

Carla,

Do you have a large t-shirt and/or a large hoodie? If so, let me know...

11/02/08 06:32 PM #1154

Sara Francis (Fujimura)

Thanks for the well wishes on my (our) bday. My bday was definitely better that Tara's. She had her impacted wisdom teeth cut out on Friday. So while I was out trick-or-treating as Batgirl, Tara was at home as Chipmunk Girl.

Ordered my reunion CD last week. Looking forward to seeing all the pix.

Back to scrapbooking after helping my kids out with their chocolate infestation problems. Yum!

Take care!

Vicky Lakes (Fuller)

Happy Birthday Sara and Tara.

We celebrated Hannah's 6th Birthday today..but actually we do the party on Halloween. It's the best, we have a costume party, do pizza, do trick or treat, come home, have cake open gifts every one leaves. I don't have to plan games or do treat bags for the obvious reasons :) I hope to milk this until she figures it out.

So this past week has been nutty, decided on a whim to paint the family room, did that every night, while also trying to get the place cleaned up for the party Friday...did that, then did a Barn Party for about 50 teenagers on Saturday...it's amazing that 5 hours worth of cooking can be consumed in under 30 minutes...but it was worth it...glad we got the extra hour of sleep last night as I needed it.

Hope everyone is well.

Carla Boyd (McCabe)

We hiked to McAfee's Knob today...7 miles total. I am sure I will be feeling all of my 38 years come morning! Even the kids are worn out!
Jolee...I have a large hoodie and t-shirt...I will put your name on them until I hear otherwise.

U.S. Tax System explained in Beer

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes
to $100.
If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like
this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and
seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a
curve.
'Since you are all such good customers,' he said, 'I'm going to reduce
the cost of your daily beer by $20. 'Drinks for the ten now cost just
$80.The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes
so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for
free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers?

How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his
'fair share?' They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if
they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and
the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the
bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by
roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each
should pay.

And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100%
savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 ( 22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four
continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men
began to compare their savings.
'I only got a dollar out of the $20,' declared the sixth man.
He pointed to the tenth man,' but he got $10!
''Yeah, that's right,' exclaimed the fifth man.
'I only saved a dollar, too.. It's unfair that he got ten times more
than I! ''That's true!!'
shouted the seventh man.
'Why should he get $10 back when I got only two?
The wealthy get all the breaks!
''Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison. 'We didn't get
anything at all. The system exploits the poor!"
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next night the
tenth man (the richest) didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat
down and had beers without him.
But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something
important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even
half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how

our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the
most benefit from a tax reduction.
Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may
not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where
the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

Thank you Missy, I am literally sick over this election. I have many friends who own small businesses that will be closing if Obama gets it because they will not be able to afford to keep their businesses open under his plan. My own mother is voting for Obama knowing how it will be tragic for some of our friends but there is no talking to her, I have cried, threatened and she defends her right......so if my own mother would vote for that man that we just keep hearing more and more about that is not for the good of the country I guess I will lose hope. I don't know for some its just because its the way they have always voted but it is so much more than about abortion and gay rights this time, its about so much more. If you are a fence rider and reading this please do some research before you vote, please.

Get over it Turbo...

I don't think the world is going to end...in fact, it may be a better place....consider that. I bet you had your entire basement full of rice, batteries, and toilet paper when 1999 turned to the year 2000...didn't you?

Quityerbitchin!

Love ya....

okay I see no one has gotten on to respond since Jolees last post waiting for my blast back but instead I am going to say nothing.......I think I have said it all earlier. I will not stop bitchin if I see people hurting sorry as long as I have breath I will speak my peace..........but I still love you Jolee. I guess we agree to disagree and that is what adults do. Being an adult is a bitch and I am the biggest bitch I know especially if Obama wins there won't be a bigger one than I.........peace out.

I must admit that I find the hyperventilation over Obama's tax plan to be somewhat bizarre. Outside of talk radio and the incoherent observations of Joe the Plumber, you'll find almost no one who's looked at the data and discovered anything "radical" -- and certainly nothing "socialistic" -- about the notion of returning to Clinton-era marginal tax rates on 250K+ personal income. If you're wondering about radical revisions to the US tax code in the last 30 years, the most "socialistic" innovation was the expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit under Ronald Reagan in 1986 -- the same year that Reagan signed off on the largest corporate tax increases in American history.

I'll spare everyone the boring details, but genuine progressives are actually not very enthusiastic about Obama's tax plan. You can take an offhand remark about "spreading the wealth" and yodel for weeks about socialism, but that doesn't make it so.

For economists who think McCain's proposals are worse, it comes down to a simple point: McCain's tax plan would reduce federal revenue by a significantly larger amount than he's promising to reduce spending. The result of this will be a larger national debt -- or what effectively amounts to a tax that your kids and mine will be paying for decades to come. For what it's worth, Obama's plan will also increase the national debt, though by a somewhat lesser amount.

The most readable independent analysis of both candidates' tax proposals can be found here.

Hey Dave, how's the weather up there? :)

Although it is quoted frequently in the media, I don't think the Tax Policy Center qualifies as an unbiased source, since it's a union of 2 Liberal think tanks. On the other side of the coin, here's a very detailed analysis by the Heritage Foundation that shows that GDP, economic growth, jobs creation and disposable income for middle class families would be better under McCain's plan.

No matter what your perspective, there's a study out there somewhere that supports your position.

The weather here in Juneau, as always, is crappy. Think Seattle with 200% more rain and fewer things to do. As for the Brookings/Urban Institute analysis, I'm more inclined to take it seriously since -- unlike the Heritage foundation -- it doesn't try to forecast the effects of the tax plans on job growth. Those kinds of predictions make for good sound bites on the campaign trail (Palin's been using the "6 million jobs destroyed" line about every 10 minutes), but they rarely have any connection to what actually happens. The Heritage folks (the Center for Data Analysis) predicted in 2000, for example, that George Bush would create more jobs than a Gore administration would have. As it turns out, Bush is ending his eight years with the lowest rate of job growth since Herbert Hoover. The CDA also predicted that Bush's tax cuts would add a mere $380 billion to the national debt; instead, they've tacked $4 trillion onto the bill. I guess my only point is that it's easier to evaluate tax policy plans in terms of what they would actually do to individual tax rates -- it's much more difficult to say what the broader effects would be... On a totally unrelated note, here's my daughter's contribution to the partisan circus.

Yikes on the Juneau weather. I'm thinking Bermuda, Cayman Islands or possibly Bahamas. Someplace warm with a low tax rate. :)

I'm no GW Bush fan - he's spent money like a drunken sailor, but you have to concede at least that 9/11 and several Hurricanes and other natural disasters have put a serious dent in the financial models and predictions from 2000. Cap gains tax revenue doubled after the Bush cuts in 2003, despite the dire predictions from the left beforehand. I'm sure you're familiar with the Laffer Curve - the question is what is the optimum level, and where is the pain threshold when people don't bother going to work?

As far as individual tax rates, I agree it's a good exercise for people who are on the fence. I suspect many would be surprised where they stand based on what has been reported in the media. Here's a good table.

I disagree on the idea that business taxes shouldn't be considered. Businesses largely don't "pay" taxes - that cost is passed on to consumers via higher prices and through cuts in labor expenses (i.e. layoffs, offshoring operations, paycuts, elimination of bonuses, etc.) I guess if you're not employed and don't buy gas or food, there's no consideration there. :)
