Steph...but the house smells soooooo yummy when you cook a turkey at home. I do one every year and I am great with an electric carving knife!
Is anyone coming Friday??? We need some people to drown our sorrows with...Matt got laid off from his job today. Happy f------- holidays! Sorry, Faye.
Greg...I have the shirt set aside with your name on it.

Carla- I guess so. But doesn't it smell "soooo good" when you heat the purchased turkey in the oven too?
Sorry to hear about Matt's job. There is A LOT of that going around and more to come!!! We could still move to that island Tony referred to several weeks ago.

Mary Frances Mellen (Stansbury)

Jolee, I know I am late on this, but
I hope this is worthy to add to that really sad & horrible story.
I was struggling with my neighbor's situation-
(which is NOTHING compared to the violence & scars left on that poor child!)
My neighbor has 4 children & her husband (a doctor) left her (for a nurse) .. I am sure you have seen that soap opera before!...Iwas SO ANGRY! he taught a Sunday school class, 'perfect husband'... and then he leaves his wife and four babies...THREE SONS...that need a ROLE MODEL... for another woman & her two kids. Same small town. Trade in.(We have all seen that before... somebody's going to be mad at me for all this, I am sorry if it defines anyone's situation... sorry!) But to his children!?
But the following Sunday we studied Romans 7:8-25... Paul, one of the most obedient Christians in history struggled with SIN. Please read that passage...even when Christ is in our life, sin is still in our human make-up. It's not an excuse, it's a battle. We have to choose every day, at every decision, for Christ.. or let the sinful nature win. The more one chooses RIGHT, the easier it becomes. The more one chooses WRONG, the easier it becomes. AND we are all written with a pre-disposition to weaknesses.. I have mine, you have yours, etc. Does that help? After I read that scripture & we studied it, It was easier to understand that the 'doctor', obviously has a weakness he was not able to overcome. Not an excuse, he lost that battle. And why the EXACT same temptations hit hit me today, as it did last week, as 1 month ago. Battling today as I did lastweek, as I did 1 month ago. Satan is still trying to get me to get off track. It is EVIL. Sometimes,(mostly) disguised as something harmless... sometimes not..just obvious, horrific EVIL.
Anyway, hope that Sunday school lesson lifts up your Thursday!!! It's almost the weekend! and the Basketball Bulldogs are 3-0. YAY! (of course our football team is 3-7....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUSIE !!

Faye Sowers (Crute)

Steph,

I am teaching a cooking workshop at Maggie's school on Tues so if you have an hour or so come to my lesson....the kids love it and I could always use another adult volunteer (who may want to pick up a few tips) although I have a friend who I tried to give cooking lessons to before she got married and she said I am marrying a man who knows how to cook. She did marry a man that knew how to cook but he got cancer so as her legacy to him she is now learning to cook. Its a sad but sweet little story.

Meo, keep fighting those little pulls. We all have them and even if we fall a little we can get back on track. I hope your neighbor finds another prince who is a true prince and will be the figure for her and her children that they can look up to.

Happy B day Susie!

Everyone have a great day! Turbo out

Happy Birthday Susie!!!!

Mary Frances M.S. --- I completely agree with you. Evil is always around us and tempting us. We have to have a strong faith to resist Satan and "turn our eyes towards Jesus". Just like you (and everyone else), I have my sins that I deal with every single day, every single month, and every single year. I pray that Jesus will help me, and there are days that I do a really good job at pushing those sins away. And then there are days that I can't stop asking God for forgiveness. Unfortunately, most of the people who place themselves in these horrible situations seek God afterwards. I remember growing up that almost all the kids that I knew had some type of relationship with Jesus (or should I say religion). Now, hardly anyone speaks His name because of fear of rejection. I am a Christian and proud of it. And the deeper my relationship has grown with the Lord, the better of a person I have become. I have my faults and I have also learned a HUGE lesson. Don't judge others --- you never know 100% as to what has happened in their life or in their mind. They need prayer, not critizism. Thank you for your message!!!!

I completely agree with Stef. What is the plan for Thanksgiving? I would like to start making some plans. I may not be able to hang very long that night since I will be leaving Steve with the kids at my brothers house that night. Stef, it sounds like you have some interesting decorations in your home. Do you also have a disco ball hanging from the ceiling? We could turn your house into a "cage/swing" boogie arena!!!!

Carla --- I am so terribly sorry about Matt's job. Maybe you could give us some information about what he does or wants to do in a future job. Maybe one of us has a connection that can help him/your family out. I will put you in my prayers.

Amy W.F. --- I just wanted to let you know that I have been going to Target up here about every other week, and for some reason, I still haven't ran into you. Hee~hee. It was odd that while we both lived in Roanoke, the only place that I ever saw you was in Target. So, maybe for some fun, if you are up for a road trip, then you can come up here to my Target so that we can catch up. Hee~hee.

I am still planning to be at Buffalo Wild Wings Friday at 7pm.
Matt is in energy management. He was a project manager, overseeing the installation and upkeep of energy management systems and HVAC units. He has resumes at VT, Carilion and Honeywell. The place that makes the energy management systems he was working with, is here in Roanoke...they are moving in the old J&J building. ADM Micro..they want him, but have a non-compete agreement with his former company. We are trying to get that waived. We'll see........
Steph...no!!! the turkey smells way better if you put your own celery and onions in the pan and actually cook it! Not that I don't look for easier ways to do things...I do! I just don't mind doing the turkey or pumpkin pies either! Oh...and pumpkin bread! Ummmmmmm...that is my favorite! Gotta go get a snack now!

Happy Birthday Susie!!!!

Carla - You mean if stef peels back the plastic covering and keeps the microwave oven open just a little, her Swanson's turkey dinner won't smell like homemade?

Kristen Witt (Bray)

Stef --- Maybe this is the year for change for you. You have several new careers (the "11", movie star, etc..), so why don't you try to do a reality show like Martha Stewart and Rachel Ray? Cooking may be your thing, girl!!!!

11/20/08 05:28 PM #1276

Amy Ward (Foster)

Kristen -
You make me laugh!! I am often at Target, and miss seeing you guys as well. I do miss our isle chats!! :) Aren't you coming to Roanoke over Thanksgiving? I betcha I see you in Target then. No doubt I will be there at one point or another. I do love Target!!

Trina Schossow (Folden)

Stef - I'm certainly not at the Anchor Inn!!! Comfort Inn is the ONLY place to stay here, at least we don't have to rent sheets!! There was a breakfast room full of Grizzly Adams types this morning. I've been the Account Manager for the hospital here for about 3 years, so it's almost like home. We handle the Medical, Dental, Diability and life coverage for the employees. We do some voluntary for the county too... fun fun days in Grundy. I'm headed home tomorrow, but it is supposed to snow tonight, so who knows if we will make it home before Saturday!!!

Susie - Happy Birthday Girl!! Do something to treat yourself...did you "hope to be" make it home??

Jolee - If you are missing this area, let me know I'll be back this way in a couple of months, you're welcome to come along.

Thanksgiving turkeys...solution, eat at someone elses house! I've never cooked an actual turkey and have no plans to start now!!

Happy Birthday Susie!

My daughter is having 35 girls over tomorrow night for her birthday party. 14 are spending the night. HELP!!

Loved the Grizzly Adams, Turkey, & BoJangles stories.

Vicky Lakes (Fuller)

Ok, this is the first time over 12 years I have not had to cook a turkey. Nor am I cooking dinner this year... John's sister invited us over (we usually have everyone here) and the more I thought about it the better it sounded...not standing on my feet all day slaving over a stove cooking one dish after the other..staying up the night before cooking pies....yea I am all about the hanging out around the house and then heading somewhere for dinner...plus I don't have the CLEAN UP.

WOOO HOOO!

Barry, I am sure your "Organic" turkey will be the best...if I lived closer I would have gotten one.

Susie, Hope you are having a good birthday. Hope your friend made it on the plane out of Iraq today...let us know when he makes it home....of course you can wait a few days to catch up...he he.

Carla, so sorry to hear about Matt. That bites. My company has been laying off people left and right. We let 15 to go on the 7th, and another 2 on the 14th...every week you wonder if you will be next.
I'll be praying for you guys that something comes along real soon. John was laid off in 2002 from his job of 9 years while I was pregnant with #4...took about 10 weeks for him to find something...I had already given my notice at work..(I gave them 5 months) the job he found not only replaced his income but mine to the penny..and his severance pay ran out the day before he started. Now that is an example of God at work.

Vicky Lakes (Fuller)

Shannon - I feel for you girl..sorry. We did the 16th birthday party for Jess, she facebooked all her invites...I lost count after 70...it was like a revolving door in my house for hours. But all was good. Glad I don't have your food bill this week :-)

11/20/08 10:58 PM #1281

Stefanie Lugar

Greg-Eeaazzzyy!!! If you don't have to cook and you don't like to cook then why should you cook? Tell me that Emerald.

Faye- That sounds fun. What time and where? I have to take Tanner to get his haircut that morning but i will try my best to be there. I'm serious!

Kristen-I really don't think a cooking show is my next profession. I may become bored after a day. Need something a little more adventerous. For instance, at the "Eleven", you always wonder if someone is gonna rob you. In the film industry, you always have a different role to play. The only way I will do a cooking show is if Faye does it with me.

Trina-The Comfort Inn is the only place there and the rooms are ugh. The mattress is all of 3" thick and feels like a brick. The only thing I liked about it was that they let you bring pets for a small fee. Did you make friends with any of the Grizzly Adams this morning? Let me know if you find any goodlooking sinlge ones. I know, they are all goodlooking, right?

Carla- Tell your husband to call Crawford Environmental/Construction Services. They are located downtown and were looking for someone about a week ago. I can't remember what degree they required but it's worth a shot.

Happy Birthday Susie!

11/20/08 11:01 PM #1282

Carla- does his noncompete clause say they can lay him off too? That is crazy! That should only matter if he quits, right?

11/20/08 11:37 PM #1283

Susan Jones (Badger)

Hey everyone...thanks for the wishes. It was a good day..nothing crazy. The kids are great on your birthday..they pay attention and act right...had dinner with a friend of mine whose birthday is tomorrow. My 3 yr old nephew sang happy birthday to me..so it's cool.

My "man"..his name is Tim. He was suppose to leave Iraq today and fly to Kuwait. I have not heard from him so hopefully that's good news. He will be in Kuwait til the flight to the states which is sometime between now and Dec 1st. Crazy..I hope he makes it before then because he has tickets to the Tech vs. UVA game.

Anyway...he is flying to San Antonio on December 14th. We are driving to VA when I get out of school on the 19th...will be there til Jan 2nd so hopefully we can all go out!

Happy Weekend everyone and girls stay out of trouble!

11/20/08 11:44 PM #1284

Carla Boyd (McCabe)

Let me clarify something...the non-compete agreement is between the two companies...so in order for ADM to hire Matt they have to get LGI to waive that agreement.

Okay folks...all this conversation has made me think it is time to tell you what happened between Matt and Advance Auto...here goes...3 years ago Matt was working for Advance when he got deployed(Navy Reserves) to Iraq/Kuwait. He was gone just less than a year...when he got home he had almost a month of "built up leave time" from the Navy.(they can't use it while they are there, so it gets tacked on at the end) Less than 2 weeks after he got home, Advance fired him(they fire everyone...a lot of you probably know folks who say they got laid off or quit Advance...but they got fired...trust me we know a lot of inside stuff)...yes, he was still on active duty! There are laws against that, but we couldn't risk destroying Matt's chance of getting another job by going public with it. If you had interviewed someone and saw them on the news that night suing their former employer...you probably wouldn't hire him! So after 6 months Matt got a job with LGI...but with a LOT of travel involved. So it's been a difficult couple years with me being a "single mom" most of the time. We have known this was coming and Matt has been looking for a while.
Two more things...there is NO statute of limitations on how long we can wait and then "legally revisit" the Advance thing. :)
And lastly...I can't tell you how many times I have wished we had this wonderful forum that Jolee created, when Matt was gone for so long and I had a preschooler and 2nd grader crying for their Daddy.

11/20/08 11:47 PM #1285

Carla Boyd (McCabe)

Susie...you probably know this, but they don't let anyone know when they are going to be in the air...they actually try to make it sound like one date...when it is another. At least that is what they did when Matt came home. Where was he stationed?

Steph,

The cooking class is at East Salem on Tuesday starting at 2:30 I have 30 students and I am still putting together their menu but I think it will be (and everyone gets to make their own little dinner to take home in a container)
Appetizer: yogurt dip with choc covered pretzels
main course: omelette with the fixings
drink: smoothie
dessert: smoores

I have to do everything that can be fixed in the microwave because for some reason those lunch ladies don't trust me with their oven......(seriously its some kind of dumb law or something) East Salem is behind GE and we will be in the cafe. Hey you will get some great laughs if nothing else Steph so come on...........

11/21/08 01:23 PM #1287

Greg Terry

Carla I hope things work out for you. You guys really should have filed a complaint with the OSC over the Advance deal. They are really good about making employers follow USERRA. One of the guys that got called up with me after 9/11 would have been promoted while he was gone and when we came back his employer gave him his old job back but not the promotion. He filed a complaint through the OSC and they got him promoted. The law says that not only do they have to give you your job back but they have to give you any merits or promotions you would have normally obtained while you were gone. I hope that it all works out for you guys. What is your husband's unit? I was in COMPHIBGRU 2

Nobody has responded about Buffalo Wild Wings...is there anyone planning to come? I am thinking of staying home since there is no interest.

I am sorry Carla we have basketball tonight......are you coming next week to the get together? We can drown our sorrows......................

11/21/08 05:57 PM #1290

Carla Boyd (McCabe)

Okay folks...I have info that tells me there will probably be a LOT of people at BWW tonight. My husband came up with something else he needed to do, and I am not crazy about going to the mall alone. I am not going.
I would be glad to make arrangements to be at home for anyone who needs to pick up a shirt. I am sorry if this inconveniences anyone...I asked for responses so I would know if anyone was coming...didn't get any.
