Annette~ Way to go on the sub-nursing job! My mom's best friend, Karen Switzer, is the current school nurse there...but I know she was trying to get the full-time school nurse position at Glenvar...I think there are only two full time RN positions in Roanoke county schools. I could give you her number if you need any back ground or contact information!

Carla, where are we with hoodies? Are we ready to submit an order? Whenever Carla says we have to submit the order is the last day for orders...I'll cover the bill and then collect money at the game or that weekend...I'm planning on catching up with you all on Saturday night too.

Good luck, Kristen! Oh...and what's this about a pick up and a trailer to serve as a homecoming float? I could swear that Vicky and I were to ride in Erik's rickshaw. What's up?!

Faye Sowers (Crute)

I plan on being there today at lunch. Look forward to seeing you all......

Carla, don't know about McCain on SOL stand, it really comes to a state by state level to go to our legislative reps. I am trying to come up with a Task force to investigate and research how SOLs actually weaken children's learning because they are so focused on the test scores they are not concentrating on the basics. I have talked to many teachers who would support this issue because their lives have been heck with the SOLS. We are losing lots of good teachers because of it.........

Hello ladies (and all the gentleman reading but not posting like me). I have to say one thing on the SOLs. My only child started kindergarten this year and I was shocked to learn they now have SOLs for kindergarten! I mean come on. How many ways can you test a childs ability to glue pictures on a piece of paper! Also for all you Hokie fans out there get ready for a Chapel Hill beat down this weekend. Go Tarheels!

Carla Boyd (McCabe)

Greg...are you sure that it isn't just preparation for SOLs? Either way...you are going to be so sick, sick, sick of hearing about SOLs in the coming years! Faye is right...it keeps them from learning what they need to know because the teachers have to stick to what is on the stupid test!
Jolee...I will probably need a shirt count by Friday.

Hi everybody! I have been reading for the last half hour trying to catch up but there is just no way ... too many days have gone by since I was on here ... gotta stop and get to work but you can count me in for the Saturday night thing ... Kristen ... if I can do anything for you while you're here, just let me know. Count me in for dinner before the game and whatever else too! I'd love to have done lunch ... got on here too late though. :( Maybe next time!

Jolee: I think that I know Karen Switzer if its the same one my mom used to work with at the health dept. years ago. I used to do her hair long ago as well. I look forward to seeing her on Monday.
As far as Brian is concerned I'm not taking him no matter what you guys say, he embarrassed me to no end the last time. Sorry girls no entertainment for you at my expense. Ha Ha! He just doesn't know when to stop.:<

Annette: Yep, that's her....good luck....

Dear Lord, Baby Jesus....all in one week, the kid got her braces off and just passed her learners test at the DMV. I told her it was okay, really, it was okay if she failed it...because that postponed her driving?!?! She took the practice test online once and passed the daggone thing! I let her drive through the parking lot here in Rocky Mount, and TRY to pull into the car wash...@$!!X*+@!! Not ready for this...anyone have a 1974 Cadillac for sale?!?! That's what I'm looking for....

Vicky Lakes (Fuller)

Jolee - I feel your pain...I still close my eyes and use the imaginary brake pedal when I ride with Jess. She got her Learners this time last year, license in May (after 2 attempts)...the first one our truck battery died and she had to be pushed off the course...needless to say with that embarrassment we couldn't retest at that site had to go 30 miles to another town...so she mainly drives John's blazer because heaven forbid she be caught dead driving a minivan...however, now that I got the new Durango...I won't let her within 5 feet of it :) Step away from the truck...

April - glad to see you joined us on the forum...give up trying to read all missed posts...like someone mentioned 257,689,145 posts ago, it's like a Seinfeld episode..run with it.

Annette - cool on the nurse position at the middle school...ours apparently gives out bandaids for headaches and cough drops for everything else...so I'm told. Nothing like seeing a bunch of 7th graders with bandaids on their heads. That's my tax dollars at work.

Saturday - girls night...with a few spouses...It looks as if I may be bringing John with me, if so I will drag him out with us, Annette, bring Brian..we'll try for a place that doesn't have edible center pieces...where's nemo?..so Carla, bring the Mayor too, apparently he and John had a few conversations at the reunion, I guess when we were off busting on Scott...lol.

Kristen - tell Steve to plan a sick day for the 17th and come on down with me...still hoping John decides to stay home :)

Sean B - Hope you are doing well. Have a safe trip to GA.

Greg T - I agree with you on the K5 SOLs...apparently in PA they are called PSSAs..and they take them every other year starting in 1st grade.

Jaime B. - Wow, now that's what I call a job title.

Trina - In reference to the "Cheese" as in Chuck E. yuck, I make every excuse possible to avoid going anywhere that has a ball pit. And if they made bath soap with bleach for kids I would use it. After being there I allow the extra long bath time, followed by a really good scrubbing.

Johnny and I are going to Natural Bridge Friday night with two of our Harley buddies and would like to open it up to anyone who would like to go. They have a seafood buffet with mostly fried seafood and then a HUGE black cauldron full of crab legs. They definitely lose money on us...if you would like to go...let me know by tomorrow afternoon, if possible. I am going to make reservations then. We will be leaving Rke around 5:30 and get reservations for 6:30.

Hey everyone..

I am a teacher and tests are everywhere. I do think the kids are tested way TOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH.. I think there is too much weight on tests BUT and remember I am a teacher. I am a High School MATH teacher and scores SUCK in math. In Texas they are called the TAKS tests (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) The emphasis is on Math this year. So I get the pleasure of principals and our superintendent in my class every week. Yes every week. I have a different opinion because I spent 12 years in a different career. I have real life experiences. Guys whether you believe me or not..ALGEBRA 1 is everywhere I PROMISE. I prove this to my kids every day. I take a different approach with them. Last year I had 87% of my kids pass the test. It was unheard of. I am not bragging by any means. But if teachers are teaching what we are suppose to be teaching and what we legally suppose to teach...the test should not be a problem. I am going to look at the VA SOL and see what it's about. If you have questions ask me. I have to run..but will give more imput later! I hope I don't piss anyone off.

SOLs...I guess I am lucky. Nicky is in 5th this year at South Salem, and we haven't really had an issue. We haven't had a teacher that has freaked over them. Most our teachers have practice tests on their sites, plus we use Jefferson labs on-line. Around SOL time, I make Nicky take a couple of practice quizzes a night (takes about 15 minutes, maybe) and it's no sweat. He scored in the high 500s, plus a 600. I may run into a lot more trouble in the coming years, but so far so good. I think the key is that I don't go nuts over it, and Nick is pretty relaxed about them. Now my friends at work...different story, same ages, different school systems and lots of stress over them.

Vicky...After Chuck o Cheese Monday night, I scrubbed both kids with rough scrubbies. Might as well used a brillo pad. My 10 year old was horrified that I wanted to scrub him, but WAY too many germs in that place. Thankfully there is no longer a "ball pit", but the tubes are gross and that is where Lexi stayed.

Kristen...Vick is right, Steve takes a day and you come in with her. I'd love to see you on Friday and am willing for whatever, before, after, until Saturday...(o:

Annette...Way to go on the job. We got pretty familiar with the school nurse last year, when Nick spent a few months in a cast on his right arm. Lots of pain when trying to write.

April...sorry we missed you at lunch, send me or Faye your work e-mail or cell and we will give you a heads up next time. I out for the next couple of weeks (due to travel), but I know the rest of the crowd is planning to get together.

Hey Susie......please piss away, I have and they keep coming back for more so take some pressure off me....:)as I told Jolee there is nothing like being set free and venting on the forum........

no anyways I guess my 1 question is this: I have 3 teachers with over 25 years of experience that have stated to me within the past 2 years that all the emphasis that are being placed on the SOL scoring and tests, their #1 focus HAS to be getting the students prepared for the tests. Our elementary school actually scored very high on the SOL testing but by the end of year the teachers were so stressed out it was terrible. What avenues are there for parents to help and students to be prepared but still give students the opportunity to have gym time, craft time, music time, things we had growing up that seems to be forgotten about and its a shame but usually parents are blaming teachers and not the school systems for all these tests. Another thing (oh lord here I start now) is the students who don't test well but seem to know the material is there a way to test their knowledge.....we started computerized SOL testing last year and our scores still improved but the whole faculty was nervous about it.......I was wondering how some of the information being taught involving SOL and yet basic skills are being cast aside. For ex: 2nd grade going over economics yet basic math is still not completely comprehended......cart before the horse......hey your information just helps me because its hard to be intelligent about something that I am an outsider too since SOL is after my time and I am just starting getting into the comprehension of it.......Carla you have anything to add......

I'm not opposed to testing, I'm not opposed to testing in different grades...remember at Burlington we used to have SRA tests if anyone can remember back that far. But I have to agree that I think alot of stress is put on the teachers, and in some ways the students because it seems to be this dark cloud approaching and all this cramming to learn the material that will be on the test. My middle child doesn't excel in Math if you look at her grades, mainly because she's a little talkative (imagine that) but when I got her PSSA tests back and she scored off the chart in Math I asked her teacher why she scored so high beacuse her grades certainly didn't show it...her answer was because when they actually take the test that is all they have to do, it doesn't matter if they take and hour, or 5 minutes, they have to sit for the alloted time, therefore the kids take their time and actually do the work without rushing.. So you really have to look at it both ways. If they assessed what the kids knew by looking in a grade book her math teacher wouldn't appear to have taught her much, but looking at how the class scored on the PSSAs, she's an awesome teacher.

I'm now stepping off my soap box.

Vicky Lakes (Fuller)

Okay, I'm back on my soap box, I just read your posting Faye, AMEN, what happened to all the good stuff...it shouldn't be all about tests you are absolutely right.

They had this "new" math up here when Abby started 2nd grade...for the life of me the child could do a math problem but I had no idea how on earth she got the right answer looking at the way she did it. After 3 years of not being able to help her do Math homework because apparently I didn't do it the right way, or that's not how we learned it, I found out by 5th grade that they teach how to do a problem at least 3 different ways, some kids pick it up better one way, others totally different, so as long as she was "getting" it then who am I to tell her that her way was wrong. But on the other hand I do feel that alot of emphasis is put on the use of computers and calculators...whatever happened to teaching how to solve math problems with pencil and paper, or in their head? We were in DC this summer and got lunch on the National Mall at a stand, that poor chick who was probalby 15 or 16 couldn't make change from $20 by counting up to it from my total. When she took my money she entered the wrong amount on the cash register and couldn't figure out what my change should have been...that was just pathetic. She had to stop and get her manager, even after I told her twice what she owed me.

Okay, I've stepped off for good.

SRA's oh have mercy!!!! Please use a #2 pencil to fill in the circle...I was upset over going out of the lines...too much pressure on a little girl :)...seriously though my first experience with SOL's was last year in 3rd grade & Luke...scored 600 on all...okay I am bragging...sorry, but I was proud of him...Jordon did pretty well too but I felt so bad that Luke was in Jordon's face telling him his score..it is not the measure of a child, they are both intelligent children I just think one may test better than the other & everyone has their own talent....of course do not tell this to my son..he thinks he is going to be President of the US one day :)...I hate SOL's & I think they need to ditch them...Jordon & Luke both made AB Honor Roll & I am proud of both of them...I hate the pressure that is put on these kids needlessly....they will deal with enough when they are grown...Susan...I also hate 4th grade math...it is tough...thank God Luke is smarter than I am...he helped Jordon with his homework last week :)...I just stood there reading a word problem & was totally confused...Luke came in the kitchen & said Mama it is really easy..the answer is 4! I am like okay..you take over I don't want Jordon to fail because of his dumb ass step mom :)...

Vicky Lakes (Fuller)

Diane, I'm right there with you...I may work in Accounting but apparently I can't do grade school math problems. lol. It's a wonder we made it thru school. And you are right, that whole #2 pencil thing freaked you out as a child...OMG my pencil doesnt say #2, is it a #2, it has this twirly fluffy thing with jiggly eyes, but it doesn't say a #2. ha ha

ooooo Jolee, I would join you tomorrow night if I wasn't so far away...seafood sounds wonderful. Not something you find much of in dairy land.

Ditto for the wine festival.

09/17/08 09:47 PM #214

Diane Booth (Mabry)

Okay Vicky..just read your post & I think we both feel the pain of elementary school math...thank you girl...I don't feel like I am a total dumb ass anymore :)...

I highly recommend the wine festival if you have an opportunity to go. I went to a recent one up in Greene County and spent the day picnicing, tasting wine, and listening to music. Had a great time.
