ROCK HILL - When you look at a cloudless night sky, you will notice that certain stars twinkle and shine brighter than any others. So it is with the light of certain people who touch our lives. Barbara Mayo will definitely be remembered as one of the brighter shining stars.

Proof that dynamite comes in small packages, Barbara's tiny frame could barely contain her spirit and boundless energy. She was a formidable competitor and athlete, a legend on the softball field and a tycoon in the business arena. A self-made woman, she built several successful businesses and excelled at any venture she chose to tackle. Still, her success never went to her head. She remained a humble, down-to-earth individual. Her generosity knew no bounds. Barbara was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, wife and friend. Above all else, she marched to her own drummer, always an individual, with an infectious zest for life, and deep love and devotion for her family, friends and humanity.

Her bravery was an inspiration to those around her. Her bright light will continue to shine in the hearts and memories of all who knew and loved her.

Barbara was born in Rock Hill, on April 25, 1947, to the late Coleman Carter and Etolia Huntsinger Carter. She was a Class of 1965, Rock Hill High School graduate and a graduate of Limestone College. She was owner-operator of Barbara Mayo, Allstate Insurance Agency. Her battle with cancer ended on June 7, 2008. Surviving are her children, Tracie and Travis Mayo; grandchildren, Pressley and Karah Mayo; sisters, Linda Surrell and Elaine Wallace; and brothers, the Rev. Ken Carter and Ronnie Carter. She was married to Bill Mayo for 37 years.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday at West End Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ken Carter officiating. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at the church.
