Kay Manning (Elrod)

This is a continuation from The Blog. I want to share this delishy recipe with you all:

Chocolate Amaretto Trifle:   (Great for large crowds)

1 box Devil's Food cake mix

1 large instant chocolate pudding (prepare with 2-1/2 cups of milk and 1/2 cup amaretto, allow to thicken

1 container Cool Whip (12 oz.)

6-8 regular size Heath Bars crushed. (I use a plastic bag and a hammer.) You may use as many Heath bars as you desire. Some like more candy bits.

Bake cake mix according to directions in a 9 x 13 pan. Cool and cut into small squares. In a glass trifle dish or tall glass bowl layer the following: 1/2 of cake squares, 1/2 pudding, 1/2 of Heath bar bits, 1/2 Cool Whip.  Repeat layers with remaining half. Sprinkle the top with Heath bars, cover and refrigerate for several hours or over night. (Makes 12 to 15 servings, unless my brother is coming then perhaps only 6 to 8). Enjoy!  This is so good it will make you kiss your dog on the lips. Happy Thanksgiving to you all. - Kay

Kay,
I'm going to make this dessert for our Thanksgiving gathering in the mountains! I'd kiss the dog but we don't have one.

I'm so glad you're going to try my dessert. Where in the mountains do you go and who all will be there? Sounds like fun. No dog? Kiss those kitty lips!

Kitty lips. You are so funny!!!!!!!!

Todd is just ten minutes from Boone...Russell's sister and her husband host the family there every Thanksgiving. He is Lebanese so prepares lamb on the grill. We will take a turkey this year for the traditionalists. The food is excellent. This will be the first Thanksgiving for Russell's two sisters and him without their mother and father present. Their Dad, Ira passed 3 years ago and Rachel passed this year in February. It will be relaxing and fun to see everyone. Now that I'm not in the 9-5 mix, I can stay for the entire week-end. Lucky me!

Good morning all - I hope you all are safe and did not suffer from the devastation of the tornado yesterday. I still can't believe it happened. It was such a lovely day until about 5:30. My daughter works down in Rock Hill, but was off yesterday. I am a storm-fearing mama, as I have lived in Tuscaloosa, AL and Ann Arbor, Michigan (Tornado alley). I cringe to think of my girl driving home in that last night and not having any shelter around.  She comforts me in saying "Ma, I was home all day and nothing happened to me." These are my neuroses and I'm too old to change now. Bless you all. - Kay

The Class of '65 had their after Thanksgiving drop in last night in Rock Hill at the American Legion. Russell and I went and had a marvelous time seeing some of the classmates from '65.

My apologies for the late notice through our website of the event this year. Keep in mind, the event takes place each year on the Friday following Thanksgiving and is open to all RHHS classes. Linda George was there from our class and brought a friend. I set up a computer wtih a slide show of our 45th Year Reunion pictures for everyone to see.

Thanks to Jerry Crow, Class of '65, for his donation that night to support our class website!! For his donation Jerry received the two DVDs with special moments and pictures from our class that are given as we continue raising funds.

I gathered some business cards as Kay and I begin to prepare our own website's "Craig's list" for referrals among our classmates from the 60's classes. Should we call it the "Bearcat's List"? Please mail in or email your business cards to Kay or myself.

Thanks to Bobby Hope and his committee for a fun time last night! Check out more pictures on the class of '65's website at:  http://www.rhhs65.com/.

Recently, I received an email from one of our classmates about "An American Christmas" which had a number of wonderful ideas for gifts made in America or local gift ideas. Dianne Sawyer of ABC World News is also highlighting American Made for this Christmas season. I have not yet had an opportunity to search the news web site for ideas, but hope you will join me in considering American products before spending the cash on imports. I understand that a lot of products are not made in America anymore, but so many good ones still are. A few are listed below, please feel free to add to the list of ideas so that we can give our economy a little boost this year: (Most of the following merchants will send you a catalog or you can order on-line.)

Honey Baked hams or Heavenly Ham, River Street Sweets (Charleston & Savannah), AutoBell Car Wash gift card, gift certificate to local salons, fruit from Florida citrus groves, nuts, (pecans from local orchards), local restaurant gift certificates, services such as yard work (raking leaves!), golf certificates, oil changes and other car services, computer tune-ups, a play, a concert ticket, books, Kringle from Wisconsin (delicious pastry you can order on-line and is very reasonably priced), cheese from Wisconsin, plants and trees gift certificate from local nurseries, grocery store gift cards, movie tickets, consignment stores (what was originally made in China now belongs to a local merchant),  pay someone's electric bill, download a playlist of songs, wine from local vineyards, bakery basket. Please let us know any additions you might have, we all can use the suggestions.

Happy shopping!  Kay

All,

I'm reading A Light In the Darkness by our own Ernie Nivens, Class of '65. I bought a copy from Ernie at the Nov. 25th Drop in. It is an inspirational read and one I think you would find meaningful. It consists of short stories and reminds me of the Daily Prayers I see at church. Ernie is a former pastor so his writing focuses on the positive. Reading one of these stories is a good way to start off your day. Ernie shares memories from his RHHS days, too!

$10.00/copy. You can contact Ernie on their class website at http://www.rhhs65.com/, or call him at (704) 349-0005.

He did not ask me to advertise for him but I am!

Below is a message from David Sealy about his Christmas activities. He puts me to shame as far as directing my energy in the right direction and, without a doubt, he does all these things with a happy heart and without complaint.  I hope this will inspire others to give unselfishly of themselves this Christmas. I hope, too, that you will share with us your day-to-day activities as you prepare for your Christmas celebration. Thanks for sharing, David.

'WOW Kay, It's hard to know where to start. We are Christmas Caroling this Sunday afternoon and Wednesday delivering Christmas bags of fruit, candy and other stuff to the elderly. We will be in Virginia the 9th and 10th for the Virginia Christmas Spectacular. The children have a large part of the Advent portion of our services and we will be having the children's choir this Sunday singing "Do you Hear What I Hear". The children's choir is 2 years old to 8years old. The 17th we will be packing, wrapping and delivering Christmas bags to the County Jail and three Nursing Centers to staff and residents. The 16th is our Community Christmas Choir CANTATA.

Our Children, their spouses and grands will be at the parsonage for Christmas Eve morning breakfast. I cook homemade orange pecan bread with honey or molasses mixed with real butter, eggs, sausage, grits, coffee, cocoa and Chinese tea. For lunch we take that crowd and meet my siblings and their families at our parents home for lunch and Christmas carols. Then after Christmas Day we continue to visit and deliver Christmas bags to shut-ins and family members until January 6th.
On Christmas Eve one or more of the grands recite the second chapter of the Gospel of Luke (sometimes with a little help) Merry Christmas Kay!"

Kay,

I've been thinking about your request and I don't think I have pictures from Christmas way back then. I don't think our family had a camera to be honest, so pictures were few and far between. I do have fond memories of Christmas past and living in Red River. I did not know then that we lived on the "wrong side of the tracks." My Dad worked in the mills all his life.

Red River was a wonderful play land for me and my brother and sister...racing through the summers playing outside barefoot in the yard and in the big hedge where we built our "cave." It was our imaginary house and we spent countless hours each day playing in there. I remember falling back into the sweet smelling clover that grew so high in our backyard. Climbing trees, playing hopscotch and running down that big hill rolling old car rims with wire coat hangers..at least that is what I remember..not a lot of bought toys..just a combination of nature and imagination.

Christmas was delightful and Mom and Dad made sure we had all the suspense leading up to Christmas morning. My prize toy was my Tiny Tears doll which could drink water from her bottle, and then pee! Now that was progress back then.

I"m sad to think we do not have any pictures but the memories are what count!

Happy holidays to everyone!

Beck

Thank you, Hilda, for sharing your Santa picture with us. Any of you boys out there want to share your Roy Rogers gear or your official Red Rider Carbine-action 200-shot-range model air rifle?  Beck, loved your narrative on Christmas in the 50's. I loved my Tiny Tears more than anything. My family didn't take any pictures of us at Christmas either. I have one of my brother when he was about 6 months old, but that is it. Merry Christmas everyone! - Kay

Thank you Al and Ellen for the fabulous video, the Flash Mob at the food court. I hope my keyboard is waterproof.  A few years back while at the mall with my daughter, we had the unexpected pleasure of carolers in the form of a gospel choir singing with such joy and enthusiasm.  There wasn't a dry eye in the mall.  There are unexpected blessings everywhere this time of year.   Kay

You guys must be tired of all this ooy-gooy Valentine's Day stuff. I want to wish you all a happy Super Bowl Day with no interuptions, lots of good junk food, and the ability to see the entire program without falling asleep before half-time.  I wish just one of you would add some testosterone to this web site by sharing some sports stories or commenting on the game d'jour.  Quite frankly, we girls like you men very much and are interested in what interests you.  I'm not asking you to "share" because we know ya'll don't like to do that, but maybe you could help us understand what is going on with the game or if something is noteworthy we should know.  Got anything? Kay
