David's cousin Anita Garthwait lived next door to us on Sexton Drive. When I played snare drum in the Chicago Cavaliers Drum and Bugle corps, David was playing snare with the Rockford Purple Knights. When he was staying with the Garthwaits, he'd come over to my house and we'd play together in the basement and make a great racket doing so. Lots of fun.
We'd walk to East High together in the morning too. I was shocked and sad to learn of his death in a terrible car accident while driving home to visit from college in Wisconsin.
