Deceased April 30th, 2014 in Costa Rica from cardiac arrest

Rick attended and graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater, 1969. He moved to Denver Colorado in 1972 where he worked in sales, started and operated an automotive service business and developed residential real estate. Rick moved to Costa Rica in 2009 where he volunteered his time and resources to the Monteverde Friends School and Meeting. Costa Rica is a great place for birding, which he loved. Gardening and landscaping their property consumed large chunks of his time along with reading fiction, non-fiction and Buddhist studies.

I'm saddened by the sudden death of Rick Mera. Although we weren't close friends, I'll never forget a kindness he extended to me when I got hurt in gym class. He volunteered to escort me, with head bleeding, to the nurse's office, where my mom picked me up and took me to the doctor. I could not have made that walk alone in my condition.
Thank you, Rick!

May God rest your soul, Rick.

I remember shopping downtown Rockford when Rick worked at Owens Dept. Store. Dixie Winquist Jonas and I were entering Owens through their heavy glass front doors when I inadvertently got my fingers caught in the door. I thought I was ok, so we went in, with Dixie frantically urging me to put my hand in cold water in the drinking fountain. I did so, but promptly fainted, and when I awakened I was lying on the shirt counter in the men's dept. with Rick Mera applying a cold, wet handkerchief to my forehead. He was often very much the gentleman and mature for his years (we were seniors). I was none the worse for wear, as I recall going to a play at EHS with Jim Foster that evening.
Sorry to hear of Rick's passing. - Debbie Rhodes Rathke
