I left Shaker Heights after eighth grade, in 1966 when my family moved to Toronto. They had Grade 13 in high school so I didn't graduate until 1971. Went to Harvard for college, then Duke for medical school. I did my pediatrics training at Massachusetts General Hospital and then returned to Duke for training in Pediatric Infectious Diseases. I have stayed at Duke on faculty and am now the Director of Pediatric Student Education, Associate Director of Graduate Pediatric Education, and one of the Advisory Deans. I met my wife, Joan, in college. She went to University of Virginia for med school, trained in internal medicine in Boston, and the trained in Infectious Diseases at Duke. We have 2 children - Eric has a Master's in Artificial Intelligence and is working in Atlanta. He and his wife, Brooke, had a son born February 1, 2015. Daughter Jenny after graduating from Tufts and spending three years as an elementary school teach in Atlanta (initially through teach for America), has just finished a Masters of Medical Sciences program at Boston University and starts medical school at Duke this year. She is also getting married in October.
Update May 2022 - I am planning to retire at the end of June providing time for grandkids (3 of them now - 2 in Atlanta and one local in Durham)and travel. Who knows - I might get back to Shaker Heights for a visit!
