Roger Evans
I regret to report that in early October Andy Hibshman passed away in Atlanta from pancreatic cancer.
Andy graduated from Washington University, spent a year as a VISTA volunteer in Kansas City, and then found his way in a VW camper to central Vermont where he settled into a quiet, rural, life.
In about 1985, in his own words:
“I was introduced to the possibility that there was a God and that one could have a living relationship with Him… I started attending church ……The senior leader took me aside with my friend now my wife, Lael, and asked me if I wanted to receive Jesus as my Savior. I, knowing almost nothing about what I was getting into, replied, “Does He have to be involved in this?” In spite of my naivete, within eighteen months I left my job, rented my house, and moved to Alaska to live in and build a community with fellow believers.”
Many years later, Andy and Lael relocated, first, to Arizona and finally to Peachtree City outside of Atlanta.
To the end, Andy remained a Believer– telling me after his diagnosis that he was supposed to believe in miracles, and now he would see about that.
He never lost his sense of humor nor his extraordinary human decency, and he remained an unflinching fan of the Cleveland Guardians (a/k/a Indians) and the Browns.
In addition to his wife, he left behind a loving religious community, and friends outside that community who will miss him deeply.
