John was the love of my high school life. He was a real character, and loved to wear his bright red blazer on dates. His ability to make me laugh was one of his best characteristics. I had dinner with him in the 80's, and saw him again 11years ago when the Chokel family reunion was at Myrtle Beach and John served as the "judge" for our beach Olympics. We talked on the phone shortly after he married his wife Jackie, and he seemed very happy. We have lost a truly unique character. Rest in peace my friend.

John was my oldest friend... we knew each other since 1952 when I moved to Woodbury Rd. I remember the day when his mother called me over while I was walking home, to have us meet. From that day on we were very close friends.

Karen is correct... starting in Woodbury Jr. High, he he wore bright reds, yellows, and greens... that was his trademark.

We spent hundreds of hours playing in the athletic fields and on the lawns of Onaway, Woodbury, and Shaker High... those schools were our front yards and personal playgrounds. I remember an afternoon on a fall day when we were in Sixth Grade kicking a football on a lawn at Woodbury. He looked at me... then at Woodbury Jr. High.. .and said... "Chuck, weekends are going to get very precious next year." Brilliant prediction Johnny!!!

I last saw Johnny around 1983 or '84 when he stopped by to stay with me for a few days here in Ft. Myers. Shortly after that I lost track of him and have not been able to find him... until now.

Rest well my friend, your passing is bitterly sad news to me.

From Steve Bodi, Class of 66

I recall the 3 of us attacking the “ramparts” at the front entrance of Woodbury Jr high school, slaying whatever mythical force that dared oppose us.

I knew John from 4th grade through high school and he was always a very friendly, great guy.  We used to play basketball in his backyward, which as I remember was directly across the street from Onaway school. We were in the same homeroom, and he was the absolute star of all our intramural teams.  And as I believe he was the only 7th grader at Woodbury to make Heavyweights in baskebtall. For some reason, deisgnating by weight, which made sense in football, was also used in picking the divisions in basketball at Woodbury - though weight actually had nothing to do with where you wound up, it was all based on talent.

He's yet another one of our classmates I wish I'd  kept in touch with, because I sincerely liked him, as I imagine everyone who knew him did.  Adolescence can be tough, boys tend to give other boys a hard time, but John always had kind words for everyone.

You'll be missed by many, John,
Bennett

I am so very sad to read of John's passing. He was indeed a CHARACTER as Karen said. HE was a great guy with a great sense of humor,he was just so likable. On Prom night Frank Anselmo and I doubled dated with John and my best friend then & now, Nancy Ludwig. We had dinner at OTTONO"S a great Italian restaurant ( long gone) on Mayfield Rd. Then on to the dance. We had a great time together.  One summer John took me and other friends on a boat out on Lake Erie. He TRIED, REALLY TRIED to teach me how to water ski, I was just plain lousy.  John stopped in the store years ago to visit. It was so great to see him, funny and full of life, that was John.

I have enjoyed reading the other memories of John, so sweet. I can just imagine " the boys" storming those great steps at WOODBURY"S front entrance. It reminds me of a ERROL FLYNN swashbuckling movie!!!!

Thank you John for the pleasure of knowing you and counting you among my friends!

God BLess, Gerry
