I could put a video/song/lyrics on here from a song that would make you boohoo...gets me everytime when I think about yesteryear. I'll have to see if I can find it. I've got this whole melancholy groove on today...thanks to ya'll!
Speaking of Mckenzie Hall, does anyone remember a band that came thru town and gave us a free concert one day, and then had a paying concert the next night? I believe their name was Freedom Jam. I think I was in the 8th grade. They had a black lead singer, I remember that being a big deal back then.
Just read these lyrics...especially the LAST VERSE...if you don't have time to watch the video (or if you don't like the Indigo Girls). Time to cry in your adult beverage. LOL.
During the time of which I speak
It was hard to turn the other cheek
To the blows of insecurity
Feeding the cancer of my intellect
The blood of love soon neglected
Lay dying in the strength of its impurity
Meanwhile our friends we thought were so together
Theyve all gone and left each other
In search of fairer weather
And we sit here in our storm and drink a toast
To the slim chance of loves recovery
There I am in younger days, star gazing
Painting picture perfect maps
Of how my life and love would be
Not counting the unmarked paths of misdirection
My compass, faith in loves perfection
I missed ten million miles of road I should have seen
Meanwhile our friends we thought were so together
Left each other one by one on the road to fairer weather
And we sit here in our storm and drink a toast
To the slim chance of loves recovery
Rain soaked and voice choked
Like silent screaming in a dream
I search for our absolute distinction
Not content to bow and bend
To the whims of culture that swoop like vultures
Eating us away, eating us away
Eating us away to our extinction
Oh how I wish I were a trinity
So if I lost a part of me
Id still have two of the same to live
But nobody gets a lifetime rehearsal
As specks of dust were universal
To let this love survive
Would be the greatest gift that we could give
Tell all the friends who think theyre so together
That these are ghosts and mirages
All these thoughts of fairer weather
Though its storming out I feel safe within the arms
Of loves discovery
Love that song. Out of all of those groups that came out of the Athens, Georgia movement (REM,B-52's,Satellites)they were my favorites. Haven't listened in a while. Nothing out now even comes close.
UNCLE Aaron, I am not worthy. If it's okay you will recieve a prize in the mail. Don't worry, you'll like it. Just something I found when I was at mom's last. Man weren't you like,in the 5th grade? You are definitely our generation's Elwin Goolsby.
Ok Vicki. That song did make me cry. And it did make me want to drink an adult beverage (and I don't even drink). But not for the same reasons you might think.
The lyrics were ah-ight... at least the first 63 lines were... my eyes got tired after reading the tomb so I decided to watch the video.
I had to turn the sound off. She was pretty bad. It was a "she" wasn't it? Was this her last song...like, right before she croaked?
So then there's the visual element to the video. Hmmm... how can I describe it... let's pull all those posters down from our dentist's office and scan them. There. Music video.
1. I don't actually have the poster, just this photo with it hanging on my wall. 2. What DON'T I have? LOTS! Hurts to think about it. Just glad I don't have the mullet. Or the perm. 3. Yeah. Perm. That's about all you need to know. Let's just say it looked better on Lee Phillips than it did on me. 4. Indigo Girls... lifestyle issues? The only issue I have with their lifestyle is that they didn't learn to sing. That's somewhat condusive to being successful in the music industry. But what do I know? 5. Gotta run - it's been fun today! Heading out to my son's Cub Scout meeting. I'm the Bear Den leader. 6. Cub scouts. Remember?
Wow, you guys were busy today. Too much to go back over, but I will contribute this- The Day and Nite Store. This was the place for those of us in that hood to play video games. After school, there was always about 10-15 people huddled around 2 games which varied from Pac-Man to Donkey Kong to Centipede to Jungle King(remember that one?).
Aaron, you never cease to amaze. Freedom Jam? How in the world did you come up with that poster? I was only in elementary school but I do remember going up there for the night show. To this day, when ever I'm asked about my first concert, I always reply, "You mean other than Freedom Jam?" (It was Van Halen '86, BTW)
Lisa, I can't tell you when the Blacksmith Shop closed but I can tell you it was open in 1985 and at least thru my high school years(89). If memory serves, John L Crouse's family owned it then the Berry family had it for a while.
I have lots of pictures already scanned, but you guys just keep bringing up topics before I can write a blog post about it! So, as in the case with Freedom Jam, I gave you a sneak peek at one of my photos.
I'm still loopey over the Freedom Jam poster. I didn't think anyone would remember them at all, much less have photographic evidence. Makes my 1st video game thing seem trivial.
Freedom jam was when i was in the 6th or 7th grade kinda like a young Hootie? they used to have the senior plays and other things throughout the school year for our viewing pleasure in Middle school, any one remember Holly Matchett? i think there were some high school kids who played during a play or something like that! Vicki was that a JAB at Mark and I? hey maybe when we said we dont kiss and tell we meant it????? did you ever think about that one???????
