I guess if Aaron can admit to being an ABBAholic, I can admit to being strung out on John Denver music.
Really ,Steve, I'd like to hear you guys doing that Smithereens thing. I love their riffs. Pretty good songwriting also.Too bad I'm way out east. I know for a few years there LR had a very happening music scene. I know I was in Juanitas just about once a month for a show. I have no idea what it's like now. I don't even have Magic 105's site to look at to tell me just for info anymore.

Steve Warmack (1987)

Magic 105 isnt even around any more... it changed its name to TomFM and moved to something like 106.3 or 106.7 or something.

and THAT station is better than Magic 105 ever was... they play the most psychotic eclectic mix of music you can imagine... you will get whiplash... a Cure song will be followed by Dean Martin and then the Charlie Daniels band followed by Kiss and then Earth Wind and Fire...

If we ever get around to doing the show we will tape it and I will get a copy to you.

We have picked the songs and I know most of them... but "Strangers When We Meet" is giving me fits right now. But I will woodshed it for an hour and nail it down.

Yeah, we got a Tom FM out here also. I think they're a chain owned by the same media company. They pride themselves on playing anything. My favorite thing about 105 was the concert calendar and the way you could keep up with local music stuff. And Tom Wood got me backstage one time to meet Tommy Shaw when The Damn Yankees were in town.

Smoking Update (Thanks for asking, Mark.) I can't really call it the "non-smoking update", cause to tell you the truth, I'm not doing so well.

Last Saturday, I decided ENOUGH and put them down, fully intending to never pick them up again if it killed me. Well, that lasted all of about 3 and a half hours! I was working on a project for the 88 reunion all weekend and it gave me absolute FITS! So, it was either smoke or go to the reunion bald...because I was pulling my hair out!!!

I'm not giving up though. Whatever it takes, I will be free of these cursed things. I may need to go to the doc and get on Chantix.

Vicki, You can do it!!!!! :)

Mark Avant (1985)

Hey Vic, I think waiting until all this reunion and 1st quarter of the year stress is over is a good idea. You're wise to come to that conclusion. You almost need Jedi-like
zen in your life to quit those things. Good call.

01/13/09 02:42 PM #1553

Steve Warmack (1987)

Believe it or not. Vic... I am kind of "quitting" with you.. and it is tough, (though I dont have an addiction as such.)

I used to smoke my pipe every few days in the fall when the first cold snap hit. Then I got to where I would smoke it only in the fall and in the winter.

Now I have five pipes and smoke them 4-5 nights a week and that is just toooooooo much.

So I am trying to cut it back to one day a week.. maybe a couple of pipes... and I am going to cut it back to once a month in the late spring and summer.

And I am going to start exercising, eating better, and taking care of myself and working out again.

I have gotten wayy too lazy.

YOU are already ahead of me on the exercise thing... and at the same place as far as cutting back/quitting the smoking.

It is tough... and I dont HAVE an addiction... I just like it... I will put it down for months and not think about it.. but when I start thinking about it it is hard to deny myself.

self control. I wish I could buy that in a tablet.

I dont smoke never have! but of all the products on the market the smoke from a blended tobacco from a pipe makes it smell so good! Im not a coffee guy either but i love the smell of it brewing!

01/13/09 06:03 PM #1555

Mark Avant (1985)

I never really smoked either Justin. I am with you on the smell of pipe smoke and coffee. I don't like coffee much but it does smell good. If I have any real addiction its beer.Out here the micro-brews are a cottage industry. So there's so much to choose from. Heck I even brew my own. Although in small amounts. Every litte restaurant, cafe and bar here has their own brews. I kinda treat them like someone does fine wines.

Justin James (1986)

It's funny that you say that Mark because im the same way! :) ive never meet a beer that i did not become friends with! LOL and to think way back in Sheridan at some of the Keggers i used to look at people and think they were nuts for talking about how good the beer was. I did not like beer then it was "NASTY" i acquired a taste for it in the Navy, the drinking age was 18 with military ID and we had beer machines in the barricks, and the rest is history! How do you brew your own? ive never thought about trying it but i do like the few micro brewers we have had here! they may be a hobby worth taking up?

01/14/09 02:00 AM #1557

Mark Avant (1985)

Justin, this is the kit I use. There are many out there. You can start with their basic recipe and go from there. The more people you talk to that brew their own the more variety you can get. The website is mrbeer.com It doesn't have to be expensive, and it's fun.

With both Beer and Tobacco I just find something I like and stick with it. I have tried a number of different varieties... but I always seem to come back to my wheelhouse.

With Tobacco, it is a solid black aromatic Cavendish called "Midnight" that I buy at the Pipe and Tobacco store across from UALR. Veeeery smooth. I have also smoked a little "Wilshire" and tried a few others... but "Midnight" is what I stick with.

With Beer.. I hated it in high school and didnt develop a taste for it until about the time Vic and I got married. It was Killians Red that did it. I loved that beer. Still do in fact, though there is a local brewery here down close to Vinos called "Diamond Bear" and "Diamond Bear Red" has become my beer of choice in the colder months. Once it gets hot I actually opt for a light and ice cold Busch Light. Especially in the dog days of summer when I am mowing.

Brodsky brewed for a while... I paid attention to the process at first and seems like a fun hobby... but I think I decided that it was going to cost more and taste worse (at least initially) than just going to the store... so I ultimately didnt start take up the hobby... but it was interesting to see how it was done.

Beeeeeeeerrrrrr!!! Now THIS is a good conversation!!!!

I absolutely HATED beer at first!!! Thought it tasted like Alpo. I remember the first time I tasted it. I was with Becky at her boyfriend's house in Morgan. I think I drank about half of one. YUCK!!! It was a regular Budweiser.

And then came Steve, Atlanta, and Killian's Red!!! Yep, definitely changed my views on beer. I think we would get a 6-pack about once a month and share it. Had to eat ramen noodles just to be able to afford rent, but by golly once a month we would find a way to get some Killian's!

These days I'm into Newcastle, Smithwick's, Boulevard, and Diamond Bear when I can find it. For a run-of-the-mill beer, I like Busch Light or Miller Light...although Miller Light is almost TOO smooth. Pretty easy to drink too much.

Steve, good luck with cutting back on the pipe.

Jimmy Choate (1987)

Gordon has brewed some great beer. I like it all, from the super dark that you need to sip water with, to the Busch Light.
My passion was making wine. I have made some that was terrible and blew the corks out, but I have made some that was very good. I have made grape, muscadine, pear, apple/fig, garlic (for cooking), and watermelon. The apple/fig was by far my favorite. After finally getting all the equipment we moved for a few years and I got away from it, but now that we are back I am looking forward to getting my wine shed going again. My stomach doesn't let me drink it much, but I love to make it and give it away. The cool thing about it is that you can make wine out of almost anything. I have even heard of making wine from hickory chips as a marinade. lol

Wow, looks like we have alot of experence dealing with Beer on here! My favorite is corona with lime! cant beat it! I also like Michelob Ultra thats my everyday hanging around beer! I'm going to try the brew my own thing! Vicki it taste like ALPO I have heard it taste like alot of different things but that is the first time for that one! LOL home made wine sounds good also!

01/14/09 11:16 AM #1562

Mark Avant (1985)

I've never been sure what Alpo tastes like, now I know thru Vicki's experience.:-) Killian's is a great commercial beer.Good with steak. So is Corona. If I go to a Mexican place I usually get Corona or Tecate. A bad batch here and there is kinda part of the process. Learning from screw ups and all.

01/14/09 12:15 PM #1563

Steve Warmack (1987)

For Mexican Beers I prefer Dos Equis dark.

I dont drink corona unless I am on a beach... and that is rarely... I have a problem with it for two reasons.

1. it isnt in a brown bottle. To me... Green bottle beers are skunky and so are clear bottle beers. It has to do with the light hitting the beer and actually creating some of the same chemical compunds in skunk spray in tiny levels. Corona combats it by the way they box it... but it can go bad.

2. Corona, to me, seems to be a frat boy beer. I cant drink one without thinking I should pop the collar on a polo shirt and put on a baseball cap turned at juuust the right angle..

but that is just me...

01/14/09 12:43 PM #1564

Mark Avant (1985)

Dos Equis is a very good beer in all it's incarnations.
Speaking of Mexican Food and cold beer, is Fajita Willie's still open? I used to really like going there. Especially the big tub of beer on ice.

Vicki Ausbrooks (Shaw) (1988)

Jimmy, can I put in an order for some Muscadine wine? My dad used to make some...it was DA BOMB!!! I just can't drink much of it at a time.

Speaking of my dad: he just found out yesterday that he has fluid in the ventricle of his brain. They're going to be doing surgery in February to remove the fluid. He says that it's nothing serious, but you know any time they have to go into the brain, things can go wrong. I would appreciate your prayers for him. Thanks, guys!

01/14/09 01:35 PM #1566

Chuck Schwartz (1985)

Steve, the frat boy beer analysis of Corona is hilarious! You guys would probably love the Western Slope of Colorado. Lots of orchards and lots of wine! I have a good friend who makes wine and wow is it good.

01/14/09 03:31 PM #1567

Steve Warmack (1987)

Chuck... the thing is... I kind of feel the same way about the entire state of Colorado.

Dont get me wrong.. Colorado is as beautiful as any place in the country... but when I am there... even in the most stunning part of the state... I feel like there is always a Sig Ep kegger or something going on within four miles from any place at any given moment... with guys drinking corona and listening to nickelback with their collars popped.

I am a Northwest Wyoming/Montana man myself.

01/14/09 04:54 PM #1568

Justin James (1986)

Vicki, prayers sent! Well im by no means the frat boy type but i do love me some corona, only with lime! with out that little bit of lime it does taste like skunk beer. Dang i like Nickleback also, guess im screwed up all around!

01/14/09 05:02 PM #1569

Steve Warmack (1987)

Oh no... not at all... no offense meant on any of those things.

but if I ever catch you with a popped collar and an askew hat I shall tease you mercilessly.

01/14/09 05:25 PM #1570

Mark Avant (1985)

They still turn their collars up? Sheesh, they've been doing that since Pretty in Pink came out.
Not a big Nickelback fan myself. Don't wanna offend so that's all I'll say about that.
I actually like Corona but will happily drink some Tecate or Dos Equis. The ultimate skunky beer though, in my opinion would be Grolsh. Love the bottles, great for makin' your own but the beer definitely tastes like a skunk smells. Though after 4 or 5 of 'em I really don't usually care.

01/14/09 06:34 PM #1571

Justin James (1986)

hey there Mike Brown how are you doing. Steve i dont have that collar thing going but in my younger days i did do the whole tie thing and after several it always seemed to be thrown over one shoulder. "what was i thinking back then" i pretty much stick too the clear stuff minus "tea kill ya" a really bad experence with it, cant even stand the smell now.
