We never climbed the water tower, but we made that suspended bridge swing like crazy. The wasps would swarm out from under it and you'd have to run like...well you know.

I am sorry to hear about Gordy. We spent alot of time together in and out of school. The hole out in the baseball field was your escape from school property at recess. You could sneak into the ditch behind the volunteer fire dept. and do whatever. I am guessing they filled it in. Mike I knew Tim Warner really well. We played baseball together for a lot of years.

Chuck, I do remember the fox hole in the out-field. I remember during recess we would go out there and dip some skoal bandits, or do whatever. Like you said it was an escape from school.
Back to Mr. Schrader. I had a run in with him back a few years ago when my son was in the 4th grade. Believe it or not Mr. Schraders Sister teaches there and she is just as bad if not worse than him.

Wow! I love "Lost". Whew! Okay, go ahead and rip me if you hate the show! I probably deserve it! Moose, you know the "foxhole". Exactly! Okay, which East Enders remember hanging at Willow Springs? I loved the big toboggan ride into the lake. Pretty sketchy, but pretty fun. That would be an insurance nightmare these days! LOL!

Not just East Enders. I went to that dank lagoon many times.
And that toboggan of death with the exposed skin flayers called rollers on the toboggan itself. I especially liked the high dive.

Vicki Ausbrooks (Shaw) (1988)

I learned to swim at Willow Springs! The toboggan ride was AWESOME 'cep for the whole danger of getting your fingers mutilated thing. GOOD TIMES! And didn't they have one of those barrel-roll things out in the middle? Or did I dream that? OH!!! And the skating rink there!!! I remember my parents taking me there when I was about 12-years-old and my dad could skate CIRCLES around everyone there, even though the rink itself was PITIFUL...uneven boards and all that! My dad was a skatin' FREAK!

Justin, I've missed y'all too! Just been really busy lately. BTW, smoking cessation attempt #6: FAILED. I'm thinkin' I may have to do like my mom did and wait until my kids are grown and out of the house! ; )

Hey i made it willow springs a time or two but not much i lived about 10 miles south of Sheridan! Chuck im no fan of "Lost" but you get to keep your man card, now if you had said Greys anatomy well i dont know!

Have you ever seen "Cats Eye" the scene in there about smoking shows you how bad it is to quit! as Jimmy V said "Dont give up, Dont ever give up" or as in the water boy "You can do it" Just keep trying its worth it!

Mark Avant (1985)

My mom smoked for 40+ years. She quit cold turkey when the price went over $3 a pack. She's very cheap. You just have to find your motivation.(sounds like acting class)
I believe you're right about the barrell. I can vaugely remember it. Chuck was right you couldn't keep a place like that open now with the insurance companies running the world.

I was waiting for the AW magic to happen. This still doesn't trump the Freedom Jam magic trick. That was Houdini territory.

Jody, you are correct Willow Springs is still working. I think they have made several modifications since we were youngsters though. I know we used to hear stories about snakes in there and (baby ruth candy bars floating) :), but not sure if they were all true. I dont think the roller rink is still in operation. I remember going to a birthday party there with Kenny Hunter, Tim Kristel, Tony Kristel, Tim Warner, Brent Atkinson and a lot more people and the song "Rub it in Rub it in" being played , and playing Limbo on roller skates. Those were the days.

When you can find a vintage photo using Google, it's called cheating.
When you can find a vintage photo using your own scrapbook, it's called magic.

SHIFT + Enter twice :)

I actually found the Willow Springs website over a year ago & have been intending to blog about it. I still had the weblink stored away, and when the topic came up here... whah lah.

I feel like I've missed out by living in Sheridan....I thought we had the upper hand...now I know the truth. However, I'll put our MR. BUCK (and his tag team Mrs. Buck) up against your Schrader any day!

Justin James (1986)

Stacy they may have had some good things in EE but we had the SONIC and MM that trumps all! :)

02/26/09 01:11 PM #1838

Trina Smurl (Williams) (1989)

I agree with Stacy! I only had 2 spankings in school..... EVER and they both came from Mr. and Mrs. Buck!! I had Mrs. Buck for 1st grade... spanking #1... foggy on why... But I think I was out of my seat without permission... crazy stuff I know! 2nd spanking was in 3rd grade. I got in trouble on the bus so Mr. Buck took care of that one. OUCH!

And yes the Sonic and MM trumps everything!!

Aaron- you've done it again, good play my friend

I remember being scared to death of Mrs. Hughes. middle school math teacher. Actually a very nice lady I learned in later years.

Don't forget the Benton quarter. And roller coaster road.
Very exciting local attractions.

Thanks Jody - and nice segue into Mrs. Hughes.

We were neighbors during all my school years growing up on Mockingbird Lane. We were in the 1st & 2nd houses on Mockingbird - on the hill beside the Mad Butcher & Movie World/Firehouse Subs/ARKLA Gas building.

We walked to school together most every day during middle school. Once I started band, I had to carry my Tenor Sax back & forth. I'd often wimp out and she'd have to carry it for me. Quite the gentlemen I was.

I'm sure you guys know that Mrs. Hughes & Mr. Buck are brother/sister.

Mr. & Mrs. Hughes are still alive & doing quite well. Mrs. Hughes brings the mail to my 87 yr old grandma every day.

I've never raced at the Benton Quarter, but I've almost died on Roller Coaster.

Who hasn't tried to jump that one hill. If you hit it just fast enough. I remember being terrified of Mrs. Ellis when I was in 4th grade. Mr. Buck was scary also. I always thought Mrs. Hughes was nice. I bet you didn't admit back then to walking to school w/a teacher.

Bridget Sterrett (Felstead) (1988)

I rode the bus every day to school and roller coaster road was the route. Our bus driver would floor it and we would go over that hill so fast that we would almost touch the top of the inside of the bus!!!!! It was great. I have taken my kids down that path a time or two when I come in to visit family. My dad thought he was the dukes of hazzard one day going over that hill. My niece Dena was with us that day. She ended up on the dash board and broke off the rear view mirror!!!! I was half way out the window and ended up hitting the floor so hard it jarred my back. The best memories!!!!!

I didn't wanna admit it Mark, but there was a more damaging rumor going around - that being Mrs. Hughes was believed to be my grandma.

Had to nip that one in the bud real quick.

The upside - on those cold mornings before the 8 o'clock bell rang, when all ya'll were out on the blacktop freezing your Jordaches off, I was in Mrs. Hughes' nice, warm, toasty room. :)

02/26/09 07:27 PM #1846

Mark Avant (1985)

Oh my, I would've def cleared that up. And I didn't wear Jordaches until SR high thank you.;}
