Tammy Burns (Busch) (1987)

Hey Everyone! Does anyone remember Coach Bailey in high school? The only paddling I ever got was from him. The ones of us who had our driver's license already in driver's ed were suppose to be either in study hall or I was going over to the elementary school. Everyone was being so rowdy in senior hall that he took all of us and gave us ALL 3 licks. Didn't want any excuses. Never been in trouble in my life! I don't even think my parents ever knew. I'll NEVER forget that!

Aaron, I thought Mrs. Hughes was a great teacher. I always heard how mean she was and was scared to death of her. What ever happened to the science teacher we had in middle school. Was it Mr. Hope? I can remember we use to get away with anything in there. I use to laugh at some of the things they would pull on him. Wasn't he Mrs. Ray's brother or am I dreaming that?

Mr. Hope if i remember right he was the 5th grade science teacher last room on the right by the bathrooms maybe! you guys may have got away with stuff from him but i got more paddleings from him than any other teacher, like upwards of 30 licks maybe more it was weekly it seemed like? Did anyone ever see Mr. Wilson spaze out I had him so mad he turned beat red and screamed and stormed out! got to go see Charlie W. for that one and he could swing a stick pretty good!!!!!

Was he 5th? I was thinking Mrs. Rash was 5th and he was 6th. You must have really been bad. I couldn't get over some of the excuses people would give him to get out of class. I've learned from all of those experiences. My kindergarten students try to get out of class all the time and pull things on me, but I know better. They will tell me they need to go to the bathroom to get out in the hall to get water. The funny thing is they had just asked 50 times to go get a drink (to get out of class) before they finally ask me to go to the bathroom They must think I was born only yesterday! LOL

Ok, I have a few attractions for the East End Community that we all have probably partaken in that have not been mentioned.

We had a spooky road with a ghost light (Woodson Lateral)-Uh Huh...

creepy Springlake CC-Movie filmed there. -Thats right...

Almost zero traffic laws-Although I got pulled over by Burkie's dad a few times, but it was lame.

And of course the "Dank Lagoon" of Willow Springs and all the other stuff!

As far as mean principals I don't know. I didn't know Mr. Buck and I guess the double team affect would be pretty grueling. Schrader was pretty mean. He busted me for rolling a cookie on the floor on the last day of school! The guy even had a sewer pond named after him.

I had Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Ray (interesting lady), Mr. Hope (Shhhp!), Roy Wilson (and he did turn really, really red). Mrs. Rhoden could swing a paddle pretty well also!

Nice move with the Willow Springs website Uncle Aaron! I thought you were gonna pull a fast one on us and give us a RickRollin! I see that they pulled the Toboggan ride in 2002. Bummer! I remember getting into a contest with Richard Wright about who could go down that thing the best. We both went backwards. Stupid kids.

Wow. You all have brought back some memories. I had forgottena bout the movie filme down off Woodson Lateral. I think it was one of those giant alligator films.

And I definately remember Mrs. Ellis. I thought of her when I saw Men in Black and Will Smith was talking about his teacher being from Venus...LOL

I actually substituted in Mr. Hopes old room last year. it felt really strange being in front of the class in that room.

Mr. Wilson is still teaching at the Freshman academy. I run up on him from time to time when I am working at the school.

I was really stunned to find out that Mrs. McClain was still teaching art at the high school. I remembered her from art class in that basement hallway between the old gym and the 1913 building.

Andy, I remember Ms Mccain and that class. It was a dungeon.
You had to go thru the gym (lovely smell) and down those stairs. Does anyone remember the movie that was filmed at Spring Lake cc?

Chuck, yeah okay the Woodson Lateral light is a hard one to trump. I'll give ya that. But does anyone remember the Barlow Monster?

Jamie Gartman (1989)

You guys have brought up some good Sheridan urban myths(although I believe using Sheridan and urban in the same sentence is an oxymoron). The Woodson Lateral Light, the snakes at Willow Springs, and of course, Jordache Jeans(they didn't really exist, did they?). You mentioned Mr Buck. Doesn't anyone remember the urban myth of his Electric Paddle?!! That had me scared to death for all of my 5 years at SES.

To clarify, Mrs Rash taught 5th, Mr Hope was 6th, and he could swing a paddle as well. He got me a couple of times in his own class, but he got me again in a pinch-hitting role for Mrs Smoot. I was acting the clown in her class one day not being the least bit concerned about what she might do to me. She took me out in the hall to paddle me when, much to my dismay, she walked next door and got Mr Hope because she said her shoulder was hurting and she couldn't do it. I remember he gave me 3 licks and said to her, "Is that enough?" and she said, "No, hit em again." POW!

Truth be told, I deserved all 4.

The movie was called "White Lightning" and I don't remember the Barlow Monster. Should I be checking the guide for "Monsterquest" episodes for it?

Chuck Schwartz (1985)

I'm not so sure that snakes and weird floaters were an urban myth at Willow Springs. I swam there all the time and one time I got a cramp out in the middle of the pond, lake, pool or whatever you called it back then. I had to go for the backside and the slime over there was pretty unbelievable. Beyond sketchy! If you go there now, stick to the frontside and be grateful that the 200 ft. rusty, cheese grater Toboggan slide is now scrap metal! LOL! I loved it as a kid!

And as for Mrs. McClain's class it was a dungeon. I was tortured on a daily basis playing "dare out" with Bob Drake and Barry Benning in her class. I hated all the embarassing dares performed and my art work suffered as a result. Lets just say that "dungeon" is an accurate perception. Don't you just want to go back to Junior High and do it all again? LOL!

And Bridget your bus story is absolutely hilarious! I can totally identify because our route had some similiar hazards and even high school aged bus drivers from time to time.

Jaime, you are right. More like boondock myths. I do remember the myth of the electric paddle. I heard it from my older brothers. I don't think the Barlow Monster will be on any episode of Monsterquest. I do like that show, even though they never seem to confirm anything. Mr Hope would also send you out in the hall to await your punishment. Sometines he would forget you were out there. You'd just wait for the bell to ring and go back in and get your books.
He'd then say to remind him the next day....right! Oh yeah
'shhppp" that's great. Chuck, as I recall I was in that art class with you guys. I think I had to sit at a different table. And my artistic "talent" was allowed to flourish.:)

Jimmy Choate (1987)

Wow! You folks are bringing back some memories.
The electric paddle myth was alive and well when I started kindergarten in 1974. I had Mrs. Cash. I think I got paddled at least three times a week. I never got one from Mr. Buck though. Mrs. Cash didn't need the help.

Mrs. Hughes paddled me once. I think she got Tammy and me at the same time. Were we possibly sharing answers Tammy? Mrs Hughes was similar to Mrs. Mathews. They had such a command of the classroom that no one acted out. Am I the only one who had a crush on Mrs. Mathews? She had really nice..sweaters.

As for Mr. Hope, I think I spent approximately 11 days in his class. The rest of the time I was in the hall. The janitor was Oscar Bass. He lived next door to my grandmother. He and I would visit for the hour or so that I was supposed to be in Mr. Hope's class. I remember Mr. Hope telling me to go to the hall one day. I said "What did I do?", and he said "Nothing YET..." LOL I did manage to stay in there long enough to get my Hunters Education card though. Imagine teaching Hunters Ed in school today!

The worse paddling I ever got was from Coach Brown who taught Civics. He was REALLY mad at the time. It was truly abuse. I was bruised from it. It was much worse that Coach Yancee if you can believe that. I still get mad thinking about it. I hope I never see him on the street. hehe

Jimmy, there was something about Mrs. Matthews. She was kinda hot. I also liked to hear her read to us. She did Shakespear proud.

Her husband was an attorney. I was in her class at about the time law firms started advertising on television. I remember someone (Chris Rhinehart I believe) asking her if her husband worked for Eaton and Embry. “Because if we don’t win you case for you, you don’t owe us a dime!”. She explained in no uncertain terms that it was in VERY poor taste for a law firm to advertise. She was visibly shaken by the notion. LOL

I guess i do not remember Mrs. Matthews? maybe when Aaron gets all his yearbooks up there will be a picture of jog my memory? Coach Brown you are not alone Jimmy on running into him, I would have loved to have run into him in a country i was visiting while in the military!!!! I quit football because of him and Coach Mac! he slammed a coke machine door on my head! and the response from coach mac was if you dont like it quit! So i did!!!! I hate it too because i loved football, Still do! Me and ultimatum's never seem to work out! just ask my wife!

Tammy Burns (Busch) (1987)

Jimmy Choate, you just had me crying from reading your response about Mr. Hope. I believe every word you said. I'll never forget that class. Those were the days!!!

I never got in trouble with Mrs. Hughes. I was too scared of her to get in trouble. Like I said, the only paddling I ever got was from Coach Bailey. Never been so scared in my life. And what was sad was all I was doing was getting my books and because I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, I was in the middle of it.

Justin- Coach Mac came back to Monticello to help coach last fall. He retired, but came back part time to help coach the "billies" and be the dean of students at the high school.

Tammy, I thought you said earlier that you were a teacher? and how many excuses do you hear and how many i didn't do anythings do you hear? and know you expect use to believe you????? come on now come clean! :)

Coach Tiner was cool back then i think it was because all the little girls liked him!

Tammy Burns (Busch) (1987)

I teach Kindergarten. I get excuses all the time. I'm like a full time referee. I told my husband last night that if I hear "He's looking at me" one more time..... That's the line of the week. I have two that stay at each other this year. My life is NEVER dull. Although, my husband thinks all I do is play. I told him we needed to change jobs for one day (He's a salesman for Sysco Foods). He would truly know I earn my paycheck. It is very challenging!!!

Mark-you have me on pins and needles. What was/is the Barlow Monster? It didn't inhabit Springlake Road or I probably would have seen it! :) Still have my hunter safety card from Mr. Hope's class.

Jimmy Choate (1987)

I lost my card way back. I have often wondered if they have it on file somewhere. I have yet to be asked for it while buying hunting license. I never really took the time to take the course again.

Justin James (1986)

I dont have the card but i do have the patch they gave us. Im going to take it this summer with my oldest son Mathieu, Im grandfathered in but it will be something fun for us to do together!

Jimmy, I had Mrs Cash too. She used that paddle A LOT! I believe she was going for some kind of record. At least it wasn't electric.

Changing the subject, I never knew my brother was such a Casanova back in the day. I've seen at least two girls who list Brian Gartman as having given them their first kiss. Louann Averitt and Candy White. Any others out there? Tammy? Vicky?

Speaking of first kisses and Mr Hope's class, mine was in the back of his class with Tammy Walker. Something about hunter's education got me all fired up. LOL!
