No, not me. I had my first kiss on the cheek by Clay Hooten in 5th grade and Mark Mayfield gave me my first kiss at my first middle school dance I went to. (You made me admit it!)

Memories... I loved Mr. Hope! He always seemed so gullible! I, too, got my hunter's education card in his class, and still have it (as well as the patch) to this day!

Someone mentioned Ms. Ellis. When I found out she was my fourth grade teacher that summer between third and fourth grades, I was terrified! She just had that mean look about her! Turns out, she was a pretty nice teacher.

Tammy, you mentioned Coach Bailey! What I remember about him was what a FLIRT he was! OMG, he was creepy! I'll never forget the stories of him leaning over to "help" the girls fasten their seatbelts in driver's education class! Luckily, I had Coach Rainbolt for driver's ed! Now HE was a class act!

Crystal brings up another great memory. Do you all remember how we found out our teacher & classmates for the upcoming year?

Many of us would ride our bikes up to the school and they'd have the plain white sheets posted on the windows - usually down around the Elem. office - with the class lists typed out. The anticipation was overwhelming as you'd search the lists to find your name!

Good times, good times!

You guys were talking about paddlings earlier... Sheila Ward, Laura Burgess and I got one in 1st grade for throwing kisses to Glenn Nooner in the cafeteria. We thought he was sooooo cute!

Ms. Starks paddled me in the 3rd grade for slapping James Powell in the face, to which he responded with a double punch right in the nose. I left a trail of blood to the bathroom, and we both got in trouble! Needless to say, I didn't slap any more boys!

Mr. Whitworth also paddled me a time or two in middle school for chewing gum after they implemented the zero tolerance gum-chewing rule. By that point in my life, I had decided that unnecessary rules were clearly made to be broken.

But the most painful paddling EVER was when Coach Scott paddled me for refusing to dress out in PE just to jump on the trampoline. I figured I could jump just as easily in my jeans. See above reference to my aversion to unnecessary rules.

Aaron, I remember that anticipation VERY well! And it's still the way it's done in Sheridan! Last summer, the school posted the class assignments while my son and I were gone to the Gulf Coast. We drove back into town well after midnight that night, but it didn't matter... He insisted that we drive by the school in the middle of the night, so he could see who was in his class!

Hey Crystal! How are you? I was showing my mom this website last weekend and she commented on how much you look like your mom! I have to agree with her.

Yeah, I truly agree with you about Coach Bailey. I hope to never run into him anywhere. I was never as mad as I was that day. I wish I could remember who it was causing all the chaos in the senior hall that got us all rounded up.
(It was probably Jimmy Choate! LOL)

Hey Tammy! How are your parents? Gosh, it's been a long time! I got in touch with Shelley through our class website, but we haven't actually met in person for lunch or anything yet. Please tell your mother I said hello!

I have so many memories of spending the night at your house when we were kids, riding bikes down your street in Deerwood, walking around the cemetery behind your house, and wishing you and Shelley wouldn't fuss and fight so much! I guess that's just what sisters do at that age! LOL

Here in Stapleton Alabama! they post the names just like they did/do in Sheridan! they also mail them out and the kids are the same they dont want this or that teacher because she is mean or what ever the rumor is about them, Pre was scared to death of his 1st grade teacher because she was mean to his brother so she was going to be mean to him! LOL

Ladies be thankful you did not take wood shop!!!!!

Try to keep my little sister in line. (I know that's hard to do.LOL) We get along a lot better now that we are adults. We still have our little disagreements every once in a while, but most of the time we try to be civil to one another. I laugh because Mom says Shelley is going to pay double for what she did growing up. Devin is a teenager now. He's dating Lance Walker's daughter. He's a mess. And the five year old...... I love him to death, but he's a little bundle of dynomite. (Just like what we use to say about her! LOL)

Mom went back to college and graduated from SAU the year after I did. She teaches in Springhill. Dad retired from International Paper a couple of years ago at 55. He watches soap operas during the day and is ready to go, go, go when Mom gets home. She's like me, school is about to do her in. You think we were bad? You have no idea. In the last 15 years it's gotten gradually worse and worse discipline wise. It's kinda scary!

I do remember all the times you would come over. I remember the graveyard too. How many times did people sneak out my window? I remember one night waking up and a face was staring in my window. Dad always wanted to know why the flowers were trampled down under my window. If they only knew....... Great memories.

And our little brother, Brandon. He's become a full time student at Monroe. He graduated high school in 2002. He's changed his major so many times, Mom and Dad bought him a trailer because they were sick of paying for dorms and apartments. He is a mess!!! I'll try to send you a picture of him. He's closer to Shelley than me. I left for college when he was so little. To this day, I see him only two to three times a year. He talks to Shelley more. He's always scared I'll tell Mom. He is ROTTEN!!!

Jimmy-If you call the State Dept. of Game and Fish they have you on file. Not that it is too terribly important! I will second the fact that Coach Bailey was mean! He was worse than a drill Sergeant!

Crystal Clark (Cole) (1989)

Tammy, I wouldn't know Brandon if he walked up and punched me in the gut! But you're right, Shelley (and I) will probably pay for our raising! Thank gawd we didn't have girls!!!

The only teacher to ever paddle me was Ms. Reynolds in middle school because a couple of guys cutting up in music class caused the whole class to get in trouble.
She gave us all the choice of 500 lines or 5 licks, I took the licks.
Never told my parents till many years later as they were so strict the would have busted my tail all over again.
So many memories. I just love reading everything posted here.

I agree! I keep thinking about all the stuff we pulled growing up. My husband said the same thing. He was like me, the better child, but we had our days! My son is in 6th grade this year. I hope he doesn't do half the stuff we did. I'll worry all the time. It's so much different when you have your own kids.

Tammy Burns (Busch) (1987)

Steven- I know. I don't think Mom and Dad ever found out about me either. I would have been dead if they did!
I can hear my Dad now say "I don't want any excuses....".
My sister and I use to laugh at guys talking about our Dad. I think he was the topic of conversation some on the square on Friday and Saturday nights.

I remember one night, my sister, Shelley, ran off with her boyfriend, Bowie Oliver. It was time for us to be home and there was no Shelley. I couldn't go home without her because I knew how much trouble I would be in. I was responsible for her. She came flying down main street jumping out of a vehicle and jumping into mine. We got home about 15 minutes late and Dad was standing in the driveway. He didn't say a thing. He just put his hand out and took MY keys away. He didn't like to hear excuses and it wasn't even my fault!!!!!

Does anyone ever see Bowie Oliver? If they do, tell him I said hello. I know he's not my brother-in-law anymore, but I always thought a lot of him. He was a great guy!

02/27/09 05:37 PM #1887

Crystal Clark (Cole) (1989)

I haven't seen Bowie in a long time, but last I heard, he was still living in Sheridan. Since I've moved back there now, I'm hoping to run into him. If I do, I'll tell him you said hello, Tammy! He was a SUPER nice guy!

Tammy Burns (Busch) (1987)

Thanks Crystal! I thought the same of him. Shelley never talks about what happened between them. I didn't question. That's her life. It's been great talking to you. I better get busy. It's almost five o'clock and my desk is covered. You would think Kindergarten wouldn't be a lot of work, but it is. I even have papers to grade. They get letter grades now. What happened to when we use to play and have fun in Kindergarten? They even just took our nap time away last week. They said they need to start getting ready to transition to 1st. I think Kindergarten is like first grade now. They have to be able to read (and have passing grades) before they can go to 1st.

When I moved up to a new school I always had 2 years of being able to get away with stuff. Then my ratfink little sister would move up and everything I did got immediately
reported to my parents. Then after we bought the Midge, EVERYONE would tell my mom what I did that day. Also Mr.King would come by looking for skippers. He was a fun pricipal. I can distinctly recall his "hey hey hey" in the halls.
Chuck, the Barlow Monster was made up. You'd get a girl (or 2) to ride with you out to the Barlow Creek area (south of town towards Farindale) and you'd tell them a creepy story about the Barlow Monster. Of course you'd be down one of those dark, deserted gravel roads. And just as you reached the crescenda of the story, BAM!!! the cleverly concealed person in the bed of the truck would jump up and scream. Usually resulting in much screaming from inside the cab. Oh well, looking back it doesn't seem that impressive a story. But you know how sometimes weekends could be very boring around town.

Here's my Barlow story... A bunch of us decided to go Barlow hunting one night. My cousin Carla (Tubbs) Larue was with us, and Carla was reaaaaaaallllly scared of every little thing, so we thought it would be funny for someone to hide out in the woods and jump out and scare her. So, here we go, we're all walking out through the woods in the dark, picking up sticks and throwing them out in the woods to make noises. Carla is freaking out, saying "What was that?" "Did y'all hear that?" And, all of a sudden, this really big guy (I can't remember his name, but he was BIG and TALL) comes running up behind us, roaring in a really loud deep voice, and picks Carla up over his shoulder and takes off running through the woods with her. We were busting a gut, laughing so hard. She was screaming and crying, so he finally stopped and tried to calm her down, telling her it was only him (Dang, I wish I could remember his name! Amy Vinson dated him. I think his first name might have been Wayne???). Carla never liked or trusted that guy again! This episode earned her the nickname "Barlow" for many, many years to come! Good times!!!

Mark- Be nice to your sister. She didn't mean anything by it. Shelley and I kid each other to this day. When Mom starts talking about how bad Shelley was back then, Shelley cuts in and her mouth starts running over on things I did. I have to cut her off. Mom still says she's going to pay for her raising!!!

Tammy, you get all the respect points I have. I've sudded in kindergarten and it was like herding cats. High school is easier by far.

Tammy, if I wasn't being nice I would've called her worse.
Speaking of you and a few pages back, do you remember that trip we all took to Willow Springs?

I guess I don't . I was reading where you all were talking about that. I do remember going there, but I'm not sure who with. Refresh my memory.
