Kevin Krzyzanski (Krzyzanski)

I was thrilled to see Simon & Garfunkel a few years back when they toured. I had waited for years on hopes that they would reunite. I bought tickets for Detroit, Chicago, Columbus, and Cleveland, then realized that it was probably overkill, and offered the Detroit tickets to my parents. They loved the show, and then informed me that they had never seen them before. So, I quizzed them:

Beatles. Nope.
Led Zeppelin. Nope.
Jimmy, Janis, the Doors? Nope.
The Who and Pink Floyd? Nada.

....I kept at them with legend after legend (Marley pun?) only to find out that they had missed every great band from the best generation of music. Maybe it's a case of "forest from the trees" or maybe my parents didn't share the passion for music that I have (mailman love child?!?), but they seem to have missed it all.

What about you guys? Did anybody have parents who know a good thing when it was in front of them?

My mom saw the Beatles at Olympia back in '64... she will be forever cool in my eyes because of it. My dad, however, has less than zero interest in music. Couldn't care less. My mom is the one with the decent record collection. So I defintely get the interest from my mom. What's strange is that as much as my dad doesn't care about that kind of shit, my uncle (his brother) is a bigger music fanatic than I am. Guess it skipped the old man.

I know what you mean Nicole with the whole kissing girl song! I looked at Tori and said "Do you know what they are talking about?" It was a "Well, DUH MOM!" Love the kids music! They subject me to it whenever we get into the car! When I turn on country or the 90's music...pure torture for them!

Would of love to see Neil Diamond! I think he's great!

Wow, Matt. Seriously, your mother might be the first person I know who saw the Beatles. That's pretty cool. And at Olympia? Two birds, right there.

I will proudly admit that I went to see Journey and Def Leppard at the Hollywood Bowl! (An experience in itself!) It was naturally the ONE TIME a year it actually rained here - which actually results in 100 degree, damp, humid, sticky hell!

It was a great time, albeit most of the kids there didn't even know who they were and didn't know the words. My friend got trashed, fell down a flight of steps, blah, blah, blah. Ah.... Good times!

We also sat 2nd row at Garth's last concert a few months ago to support our firefighters in CA. THAT was truly amazing! There are a few good things about CA. LOTS of concerts, you can see all the 'has beens' for dirt cheap at the million casinos around here, and the hockey tickets are easy to get! (No one here even knows the name of their hockey team! Amazing!)

And Steph - I was just subjected to being the 'designated chaperone' for a Hannah Montana concert. Apparently I'm still cooler than my nieces parents. Lucky me! My other nieces want to go see Taylor Swift, which I actually wouldn't mind.

Oh, and I am VERY PROUD to say we are sitting 3rd row for Tina Turner in October!!! Nothing like 5 girls in LA for a Tina concert! Should be a blast!

Wow, Journey! Sans Steve Perry, right? Last I heard, they had some Phillipines kid who they found on YouTube singing in his Journey cover band (no joke!). In the spirit of your post, Nicole, and in honor of Mr. Perry, I just went to YouTube and fired up "Oh, Sherrie". Man, that video is cheesy, but the song is great.

This conversation makes me so happy- music is my drug! For an INSANE youtube video, check out Ravi Shankar playing at Monterrey (parts 1 and 2). His fingers blur over the sitar. And ever since I moved to NC, I have become quite a fan of the fiddle, anybody like Nickel Creek? They toured with Fiona Apple a while back and did some cool collaborations including an Ella Fitgerald cover...
And I love Hannah Montana too and that Madonna/Justin Timberlake song, does that ruin my musical credibility??

I'm finding it hard to believe that my 3 tiered "Vanilla Ice" hairstyle that I rocked during senior year (complete with "Lions" engraved in the back) was not enough to warrant a nomination for "best hairstyle in 1993".

Neil Diamond is pretty sweet, Kristi (and everyone else). I would highly recommend his show. He has to be in his late 60s now (maybe 67) - and the dude can still put on a pretty good show. No, he can't carry his notes for quite as long and he doesn't move as freely around the stage. But none of that matters when I am singing "Sweet Caroline", "America" or "Forever in Blue Jeans" at the top of my lungs.

To answer your question about my parents, Kev, I don't think either of them were big music fans. They never talked about concerts they went to, so I am assuming it didn't happen. But I do remember suffering through a lot of songs by the Beach Boys as a kid.

Steph, I caught a few songs by Nickel Creek at Lollapalooza in 2006....they did a cover of Toxic by Britney Spears. Wild!

It's a bit more moody, but have you heard of Iron & Wine? Bluesy, folky, bluegrassy....great stuff!

We forgot about Julio Iglesias!

CDs by artists you'll always find in my cars:

Pearl Jam
Van Morrison
Candlebox (I'm sorry! Great memories of a friend passing out in the mosh pit in '97!)
Garth Brooks
Coldplay
Train
Guns and Roses (When you work in my industry you often need some 'pump me up' music!)
Carrie Underwood (LOVE "Jesus Take the Wheel")
Goo Goo Dolls
Tim Mcgraw
Elton John

Ok, so I'm diverse!

By the way, do you remember when we thought GnR and Metallica were HARD CORE metal? lmao

Ryan - I personally loved the hair. I'm sure we could get you on the elections for best hair in '93 if you agreed to show up at the reunion sporting the same 'do. Make sure you take lots of pictures. I'll be stuck at our annual conference. BLAH!

I must admit...I listen to all sorts of music all the time but if you asked me who was singing most of the time I wouldn't know. I can sing along (which is ugly to hear) but I've never been good at the artist thing!
Tell me an artist and I've heard of them but normally couldn't tell you what they sing! My husband, Karen and Tori can tell you the second the song starts!!!

Of course Bon Jovi, Garth, Tim McGraw and Kid Rock are a different story! LOVE THEM!!! Nicole, I am sooo jealous that you got to see Garth...I would LOVE to see him!

Kristi, you'll appreciate these stories...

About 6 years ago I was at the Hard Rock in Vegas and actually played Black Jack with Uncle Kracker and Kid Rock until the wee hours of the morning. Uncle Kracker was opening for Mark McGrath and no one knew who he was at the time. (Of course we did, because they were from MI.) One of my best friends went to high school with Uncle Kracker, and a few weeks after I got back I got a call in the middle of the night. It was him - calling from her cell phone. Apparently they ran into each other at a bar in Mt. Clemens, she told him I was the one who met him in Vegas, so he called just to say "What's up". Yeah, I was a crazy person back in the day!

As for Jon Bon Jovi... I was at one of my golf courses one day when one of his band members called last minute to see if they could get in a round. Long story short, he gave me 4 wristbands to see Cheryl Crow, Goo Goo Dolls and Bon Jovi at Comerica Park RIGHT when it opened up. We were 2 row floor, AND they gave us passes to go on stage during 3 songs. I actually gave the stage pass to a 50 year old woman behind me who was so crazy I fell in love with her instantly. She actually fainted! Then when she got on stage she grabbed his ass! It was classic!

Kevin, I love "Oh Sherrie!" My Mom's name is Sharon, so my Dad used to sing that to her all the time when we were little. Yeah, my parents had good taste in music. Really, we grew up on R&B... Lots of Four Tops, Temptations, Tina, Aretha, etc. My parents proudly let me wear out their 8 track of GREASE, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE and ROCKY. C'mon, sing along.... "It's the eye of the tiger..."

By the way, I've since downloaded "I Kissed the Girl" by Katy Perry, and I'm ashamed to admit I actually like the song!

Holy crap, Kevin! Is there anywhere in the country you HAVEN'T been?

Kevin Krzyzanski (Krzyzanski)

Hahah! You'd be suprised, actually. I actually joke that I've climbed Kilimanajaro but I haven't been to the Grand Canyon. The truth is, I've been planning on a taking a road trip out to the Dakotas, Montana, Yellowstone, Glacier, Bryce, Grand Canyon, but I've always put it off in lieu of something else. Sooner or later, though.....I still have 8 more states to go!

You have been to some really beautiful places Kevin! I love the pictures of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the chapel in New Zealand!

Kevin Krzyzanski (Krzyzanski)

Thanks, Kristi! It's all quite accidental. Before 2001, I hadn't even crossed the Mississippi. But I was invited to Germany by a friend interning in Cologne. So I went. That started the whole thing. But many of my trips weren't lifelong dreams, but rather chance opportunities. Regardless, I'm hooked. With the exception of Europe and Australia, I've been able to do it quite cheaply, too. We traveled the whole of Peru, from Lima to Cuzco, from the Nasca Lines to Lake Titacaca and Colca Canyon, in two weeks. Total cost for food, airfare, buses, boats, trains, tours and souvenirs was $1500. And if you speak Spanish, you can haggle the cost of everything down to half, at least. It's amazing, and the people were unbelievably friendly.

Here's a video to inspire you.....I've got nothing on this guy:

OK, Jonas Bros. was crazy! I have never seen so many young screaming girls : ) We had so much fun!

Thanks for the Iron & Wine recommendation Kevin, I will certainly check them out : )

Have a great day everyone!

So a friend of mine got tickets to a taping of the "Price is Right" this Sunday in Hollywood!

I think when you live here you just HAVE to go do crazy stuff like this every once in a while! I hope she wins - she's crazy and the audience will love her!

Kevin Krzyzanski (Krzyzanski)

I did the Price Is Right back in 2004, when Bob Barker was still the host. While waiting in line, we made friends with this guy and his mother from Atlanta who were standing behind us. She ended up getting called down, getting on stage, winning a car, spinning the wheel for a dollar, and then winning her showcase showdown. It was incredible! My girlfriend taped it -- I still have the VHS somewhere! We also hit the Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn and got quite a bit of face time. Ha!

I am impressed with all of the activity out here this week. Nice work, all.

I have always been impressed by the number of active vacations Kevin has taken. I used to think I had the corner on that market, but kids definitely change the types of vacations you can take. A trip to Disney just isn't the same as going overseas.

But my wife and I were very fortunate to travel before the kids came along. In all I have been to Africa (South Africa, Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania), Costa Rica, Spain, the Canary Islands and of course my foreign study in southern Mexico. Spending three months completely immersed in the culture was amazing. I truly made a lot of friends. But my top 5 moments from my travels are:

5. Getting stopped at the border trying to enter Zambia. They didn't have the paperwork for our visas. No problem, we could bribe the border guards for only $50 a person. I'm not sure how safe that was.

4. On a guy trip to Costa Rica we planned to bungee jump off a bridge in the middle of jungle. Once there I was told I had to use two bungee cords instead of one because I weighed more than 250 lbs. I was a little nervous about that, but everything turned out okay.

3. Sightseeing in Madrid. I think quite a few from our class have been to Spain (or other parts of Europe). We sometimes forget just how young the United States is in terms of history. Other parts of the world have so many more stories.

2. A long weekend in Cape Town, South Africa. While here we climbed Table Mountain, visited Robin Island (where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned), hit the winelands (gotta love free wine tastings) and watched about 250 penguins play in the turf. Where else in the world can you fit all of that into a single weekend?

1. Safari in a National Park in Zambia. We saw every big cat you can imagine. The best part was waking up each morning to the hippos singing at a local watering-hole.

Yeah, as you can see I have a lot of good memories of Africa. It was definitely the best trip of my life. It isn't a place that people "dream" of going. But if you ever have the opportunity, I highly recommend it.

Many of you have been to beautiful places! I've only left the US to go to Niagra Falls! LOL One day when my kids are older I will venture out more!

I got Kevin, (MY Kevin) a shirt that says, "JOB WANTED: DREW CAREY STUNT DOUBLE". Of course, he looks nothing like him, which of course is the humor in it all.

I would hate getting chosen for the Price is Right. With my luck I'd get chosen to play the putt-putt game, and with an 11 handicap and managing golf courses for 4 years, I'd somehow miss the putt and never live it down! Or I'd play Plinko and all my chips would go into the $0 slot. Ha!

Yeah, that would be JUST my luck! Besides, Drew Carey is no comparison to Bob! Watching him on the show makes my skin crawl. Oh well - it's always a good excuse to go to Hollywood! There is definitely some GREAT shopping down there!
