School Story:

Dave Billings was making strawberry ice cream at the Benewah Dairy at 30th and Grand. He invited Bill Herrington and I and other buddies up for a massive free taste test at the owner's expense. Nobody found out.

What have you been doing the last 10 years?

I'm a full time studio artist in wood. Predominantly lathe-based, my work imcludes sculptures, plates, platters, boxes, vases. I'm currently doing collaborations with a dozen other artists. The unifying factor is that they do their work on my wood. We have painters, ceramists, raku clay, a glass artist, a fabric person, a metals guy, and a mixed media maven each working in conjunction with me. It all comes together in a travelling show i've presented at galleries for WSU, Wenatchee, Ellensburg, Yakima, and tri-cities.
How do you spend your time now?

I'm in the studio by 8AM and usually work until 1-2AM. I thought when i retired that i would watch the mariners and learn the nes of 5 players and the manager. It didn't happen. I was made to work and I do what I like.
I have a massive garden and work in the master gardener program in Yakima and I live in a great old place that used to be a TB san.

Jackie, I hope your day is as good as mine’s been. I just got home from tri-cities where I attended a demonstration at our Mid-Columbia Woodturners’ Club. We had 3 hrs of instruction on a certain type of painting/carving/ texturing wood. It was great. I hope Spokane is cool and wet, getting ready for winter, just past Fall harvest. Time for an LC barn dance and a double date.

Jan, Happy Birthday. Hope today is a special one, though it’s supposed to be red hot in the entire northwest. Maybe a dip in the lake? I’ve already picked plums at 7AM and am about to head to my workshop for some spray painting.

Joyce Code Eltz, Happy Birthday. I hope your day is as sunny as you are. Mine started out with a bucket of plums for Queen Carol’s jam making, a handful of walnuts and raisins on my Cheerios, a trip to the garden to count my watermelons and cants, and now I’m at my lathe turning spheres from spalted birch. I’m looking forward to September 23rd. My greatest fear is that I won’t recognize those I should. My recollections are the faces I knew when we were all 18. and even when I recognize a face, my shot instant recall won’t blurt out a name. Oh, well. I was never cut out to be perfect.
Until then, have a fine summer.
