Again, speaking as someone who has 11 siblings, some on public assistance and who has worked in the welfare system can I ask again where exactly you get your figures? I'm thinking sean Hannity. Its a hunch. I get mine using my eyes and ears and expierence. There are always going to be people who take advantage of social programs but it nowhere near 90%. Those are fear mongering tactics.

Again the hypocrisy of a country who had no problem supporting policies that benefitted the rich but freaks out when an administration comes along with ideals that will benefit the poor is disheartening to me.

Oh and being called naive by Diane Clark is sorta like being called short by a Smurf. Feel me?

Diane Clark (Santana)

I'll take that as a compliment greg, i know you tend to put me down because your jealous

11/19/08 08:03 PM #170

Gregory Simon Jurick (Blackshear)

Hey what can I say, it's action-reaction. You said I was naive, I begged to differ. I may indeed have a lot of feeling about you but I feel safe in saying that jelousy is not one of them. Your right though I should have said Smurfette

Greg and Diane, first of all I love ya both and Greg Happy Birthday! I'll get in on the Political Battle when I have some more time to collect my thoughts, But for now in the words of Rodney King, Can't we all just get along? The Next Reunion we can discuss what really happened during The Obama regime. J

Wuusaw....exhale. Hey..a holiday suggestion. Anyone heard of chuduckin? I may have mispelled it. We are serving our guests chuduckin this holiday, which is a duck inside of a chicken which is inside of a turkey!! My oldest son introduced it to us last year; his room mates along with himself split the cost-can cost up to $200. He has expensive taste like his momma.

Diane Clark (Santana)

sorry guys, I have to say one more thing. Greg the difference between what I said, 'don't be so naive about one particular thing" and what you said was that you were being incredibly rude and mean!! Everyone else that has been making comments have been just expressing their views, If you agree or not, it is good to be able to chat about what we believe in. It is really a shame that you have to turn it into something not so nice.

I will be getting back to all of you shortly but don't have the time to read all of this information yet, less respond to it. However, the fact that you were jumping down Diane's throat kinda shows why I have personally moved away from the Dem. Party. I will respond more later 'cause personally I see that some of your "facts" must of been found through..."hillary" Couric, I mean Katie Couric or The View "less". I am only writing this in this way to show you how rude and disrespectful some of the comments have been. Agree or Disagree, it can be done nicely. For those that didn't attack others please disregard this.

Hey big D- What does Trigg want for xmas?

This is an amusing thread. Greg, the next time you want to see a room divide perhaps you should invite a discussion on prop 8:) It is a shame that there is rarely a civil discourse regarding politics. I suppose that's why I've heard friends should stay away from those topics. Frankly, I would rather read about the great party y'all had. I wish I could have been there.

P.S. Go Obama! I sure hope he doesn't F*%^ it up.

11/22/08 04:03 PM #177

Gregory Simon Jurick (Blackshear)

I re read all my comments and the only thing I said that might be seen in any rude was the smurf joke. And damnit I thought that shit was funny.

Diane where did I ever accuse you of being a Republican or a christian? If your not either than I don't understand your anger. My brother is a republican and my parents Christian Conservatives. I wasn't talking about those, only the hypocrits. Which there are plenty.

Frankly I felt the gist of your comments Diane was the only reason Obama was elected was because the idiot black folks that Stern found and interviewd voted him in. I mean go back and re-read your comments isnt that pretty much the gist? So then you called me naive and I begged to differ. Sorry if I'm more direct and a little less passive agressive in my nastiness than you, I simply call em like I see em.

11/22/08 04:09 PM #178

Gregory Simon Jurick (Blackshear)

And Danea not sure where I attacked you either. I find Fox News to be right leaning just as CNN can be left (though not nearly to that extent) I find some conservative christians to be very hypocritial in their view points that exclude entire groups of people.I stand by those statements and am proud that I have enough common sense to see through opression and hypocrisy. I have no idea what your peronel beleifs are or if within your beleifs your a hypocrite or not. As you said if your not one of those hyppocritical people then disregard the statement.

11/23/08 10:29 PM #179

Danea Lynn Connolly

Greg, I am not sure where you are getting all this hypocrisy and oppression comments from. I find it kind of funny really. Because I don't believe what you believe doesn't make me a hypocrite (sp?). BTW...CNN, CBS, NBC, ABC all are very left wing. Just like the radio shows are all very right wing. Fox news, on the other hand seems to be the only TV station that has the guts to state both sides of the coin. They did make the mistake of calling out the reporters to the other stations for their bad, one-sided, journalism...now they are black-balled by the main-stream media and Hollywood. I think I am having a bad spelling day...everything looks misspelled.

Carri Blodgett (Crowe)

Other than hearing one story on NPR about how Shep Smith is pretty neutral, this is the first time I've ever heard anyone say anything about Fox being anything but completely biased towards the right. I recommend keeping your guard up and remaining skeptical about whether they are genuinely presenting "both sides of the coin."

Too many media outlets are interested in telling people how to feel & think about things than in trying to objectively deliver the actual facts & letting people think for themselves. I hate having to research the agendas behind every news source these days. Why can't they just tell us the news and leave the editorializing & punditry to the "Editorial" segment at the end? Is anyone else sick of biased newscasters and pundits (on both ends of the spectrum) telling us how to think?

For myself, I trust NPR and The Economist and some BBC. I think CNN has some integrity and I enjoyed their election coverage - a talented bipartisan panel and that electronic board was outstanding!

Anyway, sorry it's gotten a little sensitive in here. I don't think anyone meant anything personal. Regrettably, there's a reason the internet has earned its bad reputation for being a bad place to sustain open, honest, civil discourse on lightning rod issues like politics. For what it's worth, I appreciate hearing others' perspectives and I thank y'all for chiming in with your thoughts & experiences.

Okay, ya'll ... let's be nice. Don't force me into deleting your messages because people's feelings are getting hurt ... OH, AND WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE TOO (thank you Bruce for sensoring your message). Don't you all know religion and politics are the biggest taboo subjects around, and now, you are talking about both of them at the same time! Ahhh! Anywho ... the memory books are ready ... really ... they have been packaged up and are ready to be mailed. However, my stepdad (Bill--who raised me since I was 5) had a "bleeding stroke" a week ago today. The technical term is "subarachnoid cerebral hemorrhage affecting the basal ganglia" ... I've been spending a lot of time at the hospital. I will however try to mail them this week. I promise. Speaking of religion, I will ask you all to pray for my "dad". He is improving every day, but he has a long road of recovery ahead. Thanks ...

Michelle, Thanks for the great job. I was glad I made it to the Friday night at Legends(Plus you recognized me, WOW??) Having spent many hours/days at your house and on the back of the truck I hope your Dad recovers and I'll be thinking of you. Lily has to have surgery Monday the 1st for a small tumor they found a few weeks ago so I hope all goes well for everyone. Very nervous! Take care and keep us informed. Jerry

I'm hoping since we all are adults here we can discuss things like religion and politics even if the debate gets heated. Personally I find it fascinating see how we have all been shaped politically by our life experiences. It has been a long time since Mr's Tully's 7th grade reading class ya know?.

I think it's sometimes hard for people who are indeed passionate about issues to not take things personally, I know it is for me, so if I came off as aggressive of angry-black-guy ish then thats my bad. Communicating like this, even when it might be uncomfortable is the way people learn about each other and I think thats a good thing, but i didn't mean for anyone to feel attacked personally

Danea, again, I was not calling you a hypocrite. What I said, and what I believe is that some people, politicians especially who claim to be Christian conservatives tend to be hypocrites. Thats my opinion, It may be wrong but that's not what my life has shown me. I have no problem if someone is a Christian or a republican. My family is full of them. What I call hypocritical behavior is when an institution demonizes certain lifestyles and behaviors and then engages in behavior much more morally reprehensible. There seems to be a pick and choose mentality when it comes to some Christian conservative morals ie: abortion is murder but making war and killing innocent people for deceptive, unjust reasons is ok) that hypocritical judgmental ideology I feel from people like Bush, Cheney, McCain, Palin, Limbaugh, Hannity and O'reily. Fox News (again in my opinion) is hella right wing and biased in a way that the absolute leftish leaning networks (I'm talking to you MSNBC) could only hope to be. Is the media in general left leaning? Of course it is, it has to be. Its filled with women and blacks and gays and every racial combination you can think of. The democratic party has historically been the party that has embraced these people and the right, do in part to what I feel is s since of moral superiority has historically excluded people who were different. No matter how left you think the media is they didn't create the war or the screwed up economy they just sorta reflected reality. Fox News does not reflect my reality or the reality of anyone that I know.

Danea personally I have never known you to be anything than someone who is true to yourself. I don't think your a hypocrite, but I do believe that a lot of the politicians who represent Republicans and conservative Christians are indeed hypocrites.

And Michelle once again no disrespect intended to you or this forum. You and David have worked your asses off on these reunions, message board ect. I know personally, because of your dedication I have rediscovered so many old friends and email and talk on the phone to friends that I never thought I would be in contact with again. That means a lot and I would never do anything to disrespect that..........But then again y'all are a bunch of crackers and I'm a black guy and it is 2008.You know how this shit works. I'm allowed to say whatever I want and y'all have to be all careful and watch what YOU say, have you not been paying attention? Did Kramer at the comedy store teach you nothing?
(I'm so sorry I can't help it with the jokes, its like a condition I have or something....plus I'm laid off from my job. I mean what the hell else do I have to do all day but trade insults with Diane Clark? There is only so much Young and The Restless a guy can watch before he cracks)

I'll be wishing all the best for your Dad Michelle and for Lily too. Jason (my husband) is having surgery on Dec. 3rd and looking ahead to that has me a little nervous. It should be fairly routine, but I still worry. Let's have speedy recoveries all around :-)

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Michelle also your dad was always real nice to us growing up. Spent so many summer nights sitting on the back of Bill's white pick up truck with you and Cathy talking about life. You guys are in my thoughts.

I gotta say I'm bummed I missed this huge debate!
I personally love a good debate/discussion. I love a good argument and at the end of it I can still be friends. We all have different opinions and that's a good thing. :)

For me, I am a tree-hugger, save-the-world, hippie wannabe, interpreter, teacher, let's-make-the-world-a-better-place and take care of each other Democrat.

I am for everyone paying the same percentage in taxes. Rich too. I'm tired of the whole "welfare" argument as being the sole reason for being Republican. Come on guys-think of a better reason! More reasons! :)

I believe we can take care of our people now with good education, health care and support or we can take care of them later in jails and institutions. I personally prefer to take care of the front end. :)

Here's a different perspective for you all- as an interpreter, and one who works for video relay, I have interpeted calls to Social Security MANY MANY MANY times.

I'm constatnly amazed at how little Deaf folks are trying to live on. One woman called to get a total earnings for the past year for her daughter's college grant form.

Her total yearly income was $6,000. Can you imagine? Poverty level is $12,000!! Doesn't exactly sound like a fat payout to me!

I have never seen an election like this one. To see how people came together and worked so hard was amazing.

Another interpreter perspective- Obama's people contacted the School for the Deaf and asked them to find interpreters who could come to EVERY rally that Obama had in Ohio. Many 'terps volunteered their time (so many that I didn't even get to do one)

McCain never asked for interpreters. That said a lot to me that Obama cared about his Deaf voters.

Final comment, I think our community is in the crapper after 8 years of Bush. I'm SO excited for a new era and anxious to see what amazing things might happen. I have great hope!

one last note, I LOVED the debating. (especially what Greg and Carrie said mostly becuase we the same politics and beliefs.) But it was all good!

As much as we may not like what someone says, or disagree with them, our country is based on free speech and by GOD I love it when people exercise that right. good, bad, right, wrong, ugly or eloquent.

Love it! We can't ever lose that! Thanks for the lively debate so far! I haven't had this much fun on the internet in a long while!!!

Wow!! After eating chuduckin and crab legs and dragging turkey day for two days thus far (we all take turns meeting at different houses until all the leftovers are gone), it put me in a shopping mood (slept on black friday though-first time I could in over ten yrs due to my line of wk) and bought myself running gears. It was refreshing to read Heidi's comments. I wondered about your preference during this whole debate, but deep down inside kinda knew. You always had a huge heart back in high school, and it glowed at every reunion. Thank you for that infor regarding Obama and his request for interpreters. To re-assure Greg, I also thanked him (awhile back) for putting a little umph into the message forum. Being in the management field, yes discussion regarding religion, politics and place of origin were/is not tolerated at the work place; however, I felt (ya'll) had a strong past and a common ground (school) to be able to share their thoughts. I know Danea and I "friends" can debate all day long and don't take offense-and believe us, we have just as much disagreements as we do agreements...ok...gonna go look in my frig again

Thank you Ms Heidi for the correct spelling of what I ate-it is..turducken. I also grew fascinated of that dish so I looked online, dang, can be costly, saw one for 120 just for the basic meats!

OK First I just wanted to say...Jerry and Michelle I hope your family members get well and i am praying for there health and a bunch of good news for them. My uncle died Sunday from a long bout with cancer(one of the reason's I have been slow with this - and probably a bit more testy than normal) so my prayers are for their speedy recovery.
I guess it is hard for me because I am a "tree-hugging" republican (which believe it or not is not that much of an anomoly - I have many friends with similar feelings). So when I hear all of this "Republicans are these war-loving, hypocritical, gay/africanAmerican/women-haters" rhetoric I get a little offended and find it a little short-sided to say the least. For instance, most of the women I know, who are republican, are very indepent, strong, successful (as either housewives or professionals)and are not sitting around going please go kill people. There are those, usually very religious, who are kinda like you say. Some people bombing abortion clinics and the like...they are a bit wacky! Anyway, I know you all don't think all republicans suck or anything, I just wanted to say that. I am terrible about writing what I am thinking too.
As for some other issues, there were sooo many things I am not sure where to start. I guess I will start with the comments about the Democratic Party being the party that has historically been FOR the "minorities" (couldn't think of a better word at the moment). Historically the republicans have been the party fighting for equal treatment of all citizens. It has only been since Kennedy that things switched (in at least the mind of the people). Most of the unrest in the south and the terrible things that happened there were under primarily democratic rule (about 90%). The Jim Crowe laws...democrates, George Wallace on the steps of the U of Alabama (wasn't it alabama?)...democrate, Robert Byrd - a previous high priest in the kkk and still a member of the senate (from Virginia I believe)..democrate. And although Kennedy ran on the premise that he was going to make changes in these unfair practices...Martin Luther King Jr.'s marches were done during Kennedy's tenor as president because he wasn't keeping his promises. (Johnson, however, followed through with these promises after Kennedy's assassination). Lincoln was the first republican president and from his time until Kennedy republicans fought for freedom from slavery to equal treatment of all men. The Democratic party fought against it the whole way. Of course their were individuals from both parties who were just haters and part of horrible acts in history. If history doesn't bother you 'cause obviously things are different now, I am with you. But I don't think the last 40 years of 200 years of american history makes the democratic party the party for the minority. I think they have definitely made a change though!
As for the republican party being anti-minorities, so to speak. I don't think that is the case. I believe some people believe what their religion tells them and sometimes carry it too far. But I believe they have the right to believe gay marriage is wrong or being gay is wrong, or believe abortion is wrong. Personally, I believe it is not for me to decide what is right or wrong regarding being gay. I don't think it is inherently wrong, I think people are people. Who am I to judge. But I can also understand where their thought process is.
I really have to go...get back later
