ST. MARY HIGH SCHOOL DEFEATED CORNWALL COLLEGE IN

FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT IN FLORIDA TO LIFT TROPHY

After seeking assistance from the local community and from

St. Mary High School's past students based mainly in South

Florida and were subsequently shunned or given luke-warm

responses, a group of former St. Mary High School's football

greats decided to seek other alternatives in hopes of raising

enough funds to cover the costs of entering and participating

in the 3rd annual South Florida's Jamaica High Schools' Alumni

football Tournament being staged at the Lockhart Stadium

                                   located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Armed with a few other dedicated former players, the group

brainstormed over various avenues to pursue in order to

achieve this feat as the deadline to submit the entrance fee drew

closer. With hardly enough funds generated from their efforts

to even enter the stadium as spectators, and confronted with

the possibililty of missing the tournament yet another year,

the group decided to take matters into their own hands - they

decided to use their own money, digging deep into their

pockets to come up with the entrance fee, buy jerseys and

other gears, prepare food, pay travelling and boarding ex-

penses for out of town players along with various other ex-

penses. The entrance fee was paid just before the deadline!

With everything now in place, it was finally time for some

                                    football!

St. Mary High School was placed in the same zone with Her-

bert Morrison, Garvey Maceo and Excelsior High School.

In their first game, up against Herbert Morrison, both teams

showed signs of brilliance accentuated with patches of re-

luctance to take control of the game. The game would end

                                    in a 0-0 draw.

In their second match, St. Mary High exuded much more

confidence, playing with purpose and determination and

quickly took control of the game, totally dominating the

Clarendon based Garvey Maceo High team. St. Mary High

would send a warning to the other schools that they

were in it to win it  (despite this being their maiden

participation in the tournament) after drubbing Garvey

                                    Maceo 2-0.

Next stop was with the much fancied Excelsior High. St.

Mary High would waste no time showing the Kingston

based team who were boss as the green and gold clads

from Highgate put on a fine display of sheer brilliance

on the field to dispose of Excelsior 2-0.

St. Mary High would now find themselves in the semi-

finals and Glenmuir High School was the unfortunate

opponents to face the wrath.  In the end, St. Mary High

School would obliterate Glenmuir 4-1 and headed into the

finals beaming with confidence. Cornwall College was

also creating a buzz themselves disposing of one opponent

after another. The finals was dubbed 'Battle of the North-

coast Giants'. Both teams were in spectacular form. The

game lived up to expectations. Both teams played exciting

football despite being obviously tired. The fans were treat-

ed to delightful football. At the end of regulation, the score

was tied 1-1. It remained that way at the end of extra time.

St. Mary High School would prevail after penalty shoot-out

3-2 to lift the trophy. St. Mary High School's WEBSTER 'MALLA

MALLA' WINDER was named the tournament's MVP and was

the leading goal scorer in the competition.

The winning prizes included, among other things, football

gears for the winning team's alma mater. Kudos St. Mary

                                    High School!!!!

All Jamaica_School_games_1a_272St. Mary High School captured the soccer competition and Vere Technical High School, the netball competition at the third annual Jamaica High School Alumni Soccer and Netball (JNSASN) tournament that took place at the Fort Lauderdale Stadium over the Labor Day weekend.

Despite the rainy conditions that prevailed over the two days of competition, the spirit of those participating teams and their supporters were never dampened. They lent their support to their alma maters and enjoyed every moment of the two days proceeding.

Reggae Boyz Head Coach Theodore Whitmore was in attendance soaking up the atmosphere, along with current Jamaica national players Shavar Thomas, past student of Excelsior High School, and Dane Richards, past student of Cornwall College. Former captain and goalkeeper of Jamaica's national football team, Coach Warren Barrett, represented Cornwall College in the tournament.

In the end, St. Mary High captured the soccer competition defeating Cornwall College in the final 3-2 on penalties after playing to an exciting 1-1 draw. The winning team walked away with their first lien on the National Weekly Trophy. There were also five individual awards, with Wendell Webster of St. Mary's High School copping two, the Golden Boot with five goals and MVP award. Teammate Xavier Dean was voted Best Goalkeeper and Shaunovan Williams of Cornwall College Best Defensive Player. The most disciplined team award also went to St. Mary High School.

In the Women's Netball Competition, a dominant Vere Technical got the better of Meadowbrook High School 21-12, ensuring the rural high schools' dominance over their Kingston counterparts.

McGrath, St Mary High teachers take Lasco awards

BY LUKE DOUGLAS Senior staff reporter douglasl@jamaicaobserver.com

TRACY-Ann Beckford, English Language co-ordinator at McGrath High School in St Catherine, and Errol Johnson, principal of St Mary High School, were adjudged the Lasco/Ministry of Education Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year for 2011-2012 at a ceremony in Kingston yesterday.

The two were chosen from a shortlist of 12 educators, six in each category and after three tiers of judging from a record 125 nominees for the coveted awards.

First prizes for both awards included $100,000 each and a trophy courtesy of Lasco, along with a trip to the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASDC) Conference in the United States.

Beckford, who was inspired to enter the teaching profession because of the attention given to her by her grade three teacher in primary school, thanked her principal, Dr Cynthia Anderson, who she said took a chance by employing her as a 19-year-old graduate straight out of teachers' college.

"She took the gamble and I hope today she has won," a beaming Beckford told her principal at the ceremony at the Wyndham Kingston Hotel.

Beckford also commended Lasco for recognising educators each year through the awards. She borrowed from the company's slogan that 'Lasco not only makes living affordable but Lasco is making teaching enviable'.

Also knowledgeable in sign language, Beckford is currently pursuing a master's degree at the University of the West Indies, co-ordinates the debating and quiz teams, and teaches Sunday School at her church.

Johnson, in his reply, thanked the staff and students of St Mary High for his success. He likened the job of teacher to that of a batsman on a cricket team. "You play as a team, but when you go to bat, you bat alone. The job of a teacher can get lonely at times", he said.

Johnson is the holder of a master's degree in education and is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Jamaica Combined Cadet Force, guiding St Mary High to 14 consecutive years as champion cadet unit. He is a lay magistrate and had held several posts in school sports administration.

A teacher from the mid-1970s, and principal at St Mary High since 1990, Johnson is a Hindu and is actively involved in the Jamaica Inter-Faith Movement which promotes understanding and tolerance among different religions and denominations.

First and second runners-up for the Teacher of the Year were Sharon Blake of Lowe River Primary and Junior High in Trelawny and Audrey Abrahams of Turnberry Primary in St Ann respectively; while second and third place for the Principal of the Year were Fay Sterling of Higgins Land Primary and Junior High in St Ann and Paul Grant of Bellfield Primary in Manchester.

Other prizes included weekends from Sandals Resorts and other hotels, phones from telecommunications companies, cash awards and educational equipment.

Lasco founder and executive chairman Lascelles Chin, in his remarks, commended Prime Minister Andrew Holness for advocating a new ethos of responsibility in all Jamaicans for Jamaica.

"It's high time that each parent and teacher work together to take responsibility for the literacy and numeracy skills of our children. It is now a matter of urgency and priority that our parents give of their best to our children every time, all the time" he said.

The Teacher of the Year programme was started in 1998 while the Principal of the Year award began in 2006.

St Mary High U-19 girls advance to finals

St Mary High under-19 girls, former champions in 2008, booked their place in this year's rural round robin finals of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Table Tennis Competition yesterday, when they blanked visitors Dinthill 3-0. In a boys under-19 contest also played, former champions St Mary High drubbed the visitors 5-0.

This girls' match completed the fixtures for the two-team North Eastern Zone and St Mary High finished with four points, ahead of Dinthill who finished with two. The winners join Titchfield High, who qualified earlier in the week in the round robin finals as play in the Central zones continue to decide the other qualifiers.

Dinthill will contest the round robin semi-finals from which the top performers will also advance to the finals.

After this result in the boys under-19, St Mary High (former champions in 2008 and 2010) lead the standings with six points, ahead of Dinthill on four and newcomers York Castle, one point. The top finisher will progress to the finals and the runner-up to semis.

In individual results in the girls under-19 duel yesterday, Felicia Fletcher overwhelmed Kristina Lumbsden 3-0, Kemolyn Frost cruised past Tasha-Gay Hedge 3-0 and Janice Stephenson pipped Denis Grant 3-2, for St Mary High's 3-0 triumph.

In the boys under-19 encounter, Shawn Hamilton outplayed Kemar Rodney 3-1, Arnaldo Martin blew away Martin Forrest 3-0, Khari Allen got by Vazz Roper 3-1, Kemoy Coombs trounced Kedia Hamilton 3-0 and Olando Clarke crushed Ronique Forrest 3-0, for St Mary High's 5-0 victory.

St Mary High is coached by Shevaar Smith, Dinthill by Overton Grant and York Castle by Raymond Treasure and Roneil Black.

The competition continues tomorrow 2:30 p.m. with five urban area matches.

IN a nail-biting finish on yesterday's final day of competition at the JNBS Eastern Athletics Championships at the National Stadium, defending champions Oberlin High held on to their title by a whisker, as they scored a close 2.5 points win over 2010 champions Buff Bay High.

Winning coach Everton Leslie, who was very pleased with his team's success, stated that he was not surprised despite coming into yesterday's final day trailing Buff Bay into second place.

"I am not surprised that we won again as our aim was to qualify two athletes for each final, and this was done in most events, and despite not being in the 800 metres among the boys, we were able to nullify this with strong performances from the girls," stated Leslie, who singled out Class II female athlete Margaret McKay for her fine individual effort in winning three events. She won the Class II 800m, 1500m and Open 3000m events.

Undoubtedly, the star of the meet was St Mary High Class I female athlete Jodeen Williams, who won four gold medals yesterday, which included three individual events in record times. She was also a member of her school's 4x400 metres team. Williams won the 100m, 200m and 400m events.

In the 100 metres she broke the old mark of 12.12 seconds done in 2000 by Janika Martell, formerly of St Mary Technical, winning in 12.01 seconds.

She broke her own records set the previous day when she also captured the girls 200m and 400m. She lowered her 200 metres record of 24.80 seconds with a new mark of 23.76 seconds. She closed her individual triple by eclipsing her mark of 55.75 seconds in the 400m with a winning time of 54.38 seconds.

She then closed the meet on a successful note, as she ran the lead-off leg on her team's 4x400 metres Open Relay winning team.

Williams was very happy with her achievements.

"I feel good as this year I am much more stronger, and to know that this is my first year in Class I, it makes me feel even better," said Williams, who stated that she is looking forward to next month's ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships.

Oberlin won the female title after tallying 372 points to Buff Bay's 336, while the tide was turned in the boys' section; Buff Bay winning with 251.5 and Oberlin finishing second on 218.

Points Standings:

Oberlin 590, Buff Bay 587.5, St Mary High 351, Glengoffe 225.5, Morant Bay 218.5, Titchfield 169, Yallahs 168, St Thomas Tech 154, Seaforth 143, and St Mary College 124.

TOUGH GOING FOR ST. MARY HIGH TRACK STARS

A third place finish by Titania Markland was not enough to secure a place on the Jamaican team for next month's Carifta Games in Bermuda despite running a personal best of 2:12 at the trials. Meanwhile, after trailing in second place and about to secure a place on the girls under 20 100m team, one of the favourites, Jodean Williams, had to settle for fourth place after a hamstring injury slowed her down. She would later skip the 200m final. A disappointed Dwain Williams, headcoach of the St Mary High School track and field team, later said he'll try to get the team ready for 'champs'. As for Jodean, Williams said he'll work closely with her in hopes that she'll be ready for the 400m at the games later this month. The 100m, he pointed out, will be too explosive for the injury she's nursing.
