Mrs. Lacker was my history teacher in fourth and fifth forms at St. Mary High.  She was tenacious and meant that we were going to work hard and do well in the CXCs!  We all did!  She was an excellent teacher!  One summer Mrs. Lacker assigned so much homework to us we thought she was joking - but she wasn't.  She went personally to the librarians at the Port Maria Library to find out if we had been there! She was no joke, but had the heart of gold.  I often remember her and am very, very saddened by her too early passing.

I remember one time during class (can't remember the reason for the question) she asked one of my classmates the name of his father.  The student responded "Same as me , Miss." Well, Mrs. Lacker did not think it an appropriate response at all!  So she let the student have it, saying how fiesty and out of order he was to have responded the way he did.  The student endured the "tracing" but when he thought he had had enough, remarked dryly, "Awright, Ms Lacker, yuh can done now!" Mrs. Lacker was apoplectic! And we were rolling! It was a very funny scene.  To this day, those of us who remember it use the statement in other situations in our lives. And the student who made the daring remark continues to be admired and fondly remembered for it.

We will not forget how forthright and saucy, yet loving and caring our teacher was. We pushed ourselves to succeed because of all the hard work and encouragement she invested in our learning.  She helped to instill the discipline and consistency our studies required of us - the same lessons i try to instill in the younger ones today.  Mrs. Lacker came to St. Mary High with a no nonsense reputation from the school where she taught before so I at least knew she was not one to be toyed with - and she wasn't!

I miss her.  She helped shape me.  She helped point me in the career direction I took as a teacher and scholar and I know that is true for others of my classmates who have gone on to become remarkably successful professionals.  She did her job with excellence. She did not require of us anything less than she required of her own children who should be indescribably proud of having been blessed with being the offsprings of the unforgettable GLORIA LACKER!!

MAY HER SOUL REST IN PEACE!!
