Sorry Steve-s K and B. I have a nice big snow blower to do my neighbors long driveway. He is 80 years old. That doesn't seem old anymore, does it? I'm excited about the weather. Soon I will build a snowman. Do You want to build a snowman? (I know, it sounds like a song my grandchildren sin).

My first year at Fort Stewart Georgia for Christmas; Sue and I felt we received a gift from God when it snowed for Christmas. Her mother and father lived in Thomasville and we drove there. The reads were icy with only an inch on the ground. Bob, If you build a snowman with me, I will let you name the snowman (even Olaf). I will even buy you a hot drink (or cold one).

An ethical question for the aged minds: My son and daughter-in-law had our 11th grandchild today. They did not name him after her father. Father's name is David. If they had named the baby boy David, would it have been ethical to say the baby was named after his grandfather? I would know full well people would think named after me. That would not be a lie; but, it would be deceitful.

Steve, Thank you. My birthday is the 8th, don't ask for my social security number, though you could figure most of it out by location and age. The question is, will I make it until Saturday and reach the biggest milestone of my life (The whole Psalm 90 is great on being a passing wind, but Verse 10 says this: The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away)..Now that is a song to sing Steve.... "I'll Fly Away." My ADD brain wants to chase a squirrel. An example is the word Milestone... Roman's set up huge stones every mile. I think they were to help keep the Roman law of having to carry a soldier's gear for a mile. Of course, Jesus said if they make you go one mile; then volunteer to go two and change the whole paradigm. Have a blessed November classmates.

My wife had on Kare 11 and I recognized the old guys going to the Boundary waters; they said class of 1974 from Park Sr. High. Beautiful pictures. But getting old enough to have a cabin instead of portaging deep? Thanks for sharing the great pictures!

Hearing about them tearing down the last remnants of the South St Paul Armour Plant brought back a lot of memories. There were a few of us who had walked through those gates on our way to work in the Kill, Cut, Canning, smoke house and many other jobs. Some of those jobs were hard and not for the faint of heart and some were actually fun.  One thing about working there was you ate good!

Tom. My grandfather Otto Weber worked at Armours and would tell us about the people he met. He would buy a bag of pepperoni ends in the company store and give them to us. I have never tasted any pepperoni that could compare. He said it sayed in the smoker longer until they took them out. They made an awesome Pepperoni sandwich.

As a kid from our house in Newport, all summer long I could hear the Aurmour's whistle blow for lunch and at quitting time.

My Grand father worked at Armours from early 20's untill he retired in the early 60's. I remember going to the company store where they would by meat and also the yearly shareholders show at Roy Wilkins Auditorium everyone received an Armour Golden Star canned Ham

Dave my mom's dad worked at Cuttyhays (not sure of spelling) for a few years. And yes the Commpany store was great. They always got the best cuts and smoke house goods. My dad would always put in an order for the freezer. I would also bring some up to my future wife in Bemidji.  
steve I spent my first nine years in Newport. Went to Newport Elementary through 3rd grade. We lived only a few blocks from the oil refinery though. I remember the wonderful smell the oil refinery put out😩   
Scott that's a long time at a meat packing plant. Did you ever read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair? It was about Meat packing plant in their earlier years.

Long time since visiting message forum!  I saw talking about stockyards, my pops worked at Cudahay back in the 50's before going over to the Union Depot in the 60's.  Recently I found a coin from Cudahay at thrift shop.  Hope all is well with everyone.

Steve C. That is an awesome coin. Steve B. and Tom, did you ever hear my grandfather's horn (probably not, it wasn't real loud) in Newport. It was in the screen house that was on the river -15 or 20 foot cliff. He would pull the string and then the barges would respond most times with their horn. Scot, I'm curious. What picture were you posting? Tom, thanks for posting your pictures of the gates.

Steve that is a cool coin my dad had something similar from working at Hamm's.

Dave I don't remember hearing the horn, was he near the swing bridge.  Sometimes we would have to wait for barges when crossing the river, I would hear the horns. I loved that old bridge and made it a lot shorter to get to Inver Hills community college.when I went there. I really liked Newport, I grew up on southend of Newport Just north of second Street between 5th and 7th.  My Dad taking me along to Bartels Hardware Store and hanging out while my dad would talk with everyone.Good Memories!
