A list borrowed from class of 65 Posted Sunday, January 31, 2010 02:04 PM Do you remember? Drive-in hang outs: Northeast - Olsons ( best onion rings) - Arrows ( cop with big butt we called the duck) St Pete - Trippletts (male car hops) Bogie - Chicks / Sandys Dixie - Circle R Neutral - Barrel (fries with gravy) - Crossroads - Breezeway Movie Theaters: Florida - State - Roxie - Phiel (screen in the back) - Cameo - Park - Palms - Sun - Playhouse Capital - (In the 50's) La Playa - (In the 60's) 5th Ave - Twins @ Central Plaza - Crossroads Now that I've got you in that era, here's the test: 1. What was the name of the soft ice cream place on 16th St. N. and 38th Ave.? 2. What was the name of the 'sundries' across from school? 3. What were the names of the two 'family' restaurants across from Al Lang Field? 4. What was the name of the Italian restaurant on 4th St. N. and 64th Ave.? 5. What was the name of the all night restaurant downtown, named for a bird? 6. What was the name of the race track (not Sunshine), by Toytown? 7. What was the name of the all night market on 16th St. and 28th Ave.? 8. Where was Jay's Italian restaurant? 9. What was the name of the Yankee training field at Crescent Lake 10. There were 5 drive-in theaters in the '50's. What were their names? See how many you know and add some of your own. Let's hear from you, be it answers or questions! |

RE: A list borrowed from class of 65 Posted Sunday, January 31, 2010 05:24 PM OMG, this really gave me a headache. The ice cream place was up near the old Winn Dixie, you got a hard shell of chocolate on a swirled mountain of vanilla ice cream in a cone. You could watch the person dip your cone into the chocolate and it would harden almost immediately. YUMMY! Was is Tastee Freeze?
Yes I remember all the first run theatres downtown, went to all of them at one time or another, except for the SUN on lower 16th, that was the first XX, adult movie house, I believe. As for the drive ins, I know one was the Mustang. Went there several times also. The sundries shop across from the school I remember as my dad knew the owners but I can not right now recall the name ?? We lived right across from the school on 55th down two houses.
The all night restaurant downtown was THE OWL. ??
I can see that all night market but I can not give it a name.
Wasn't there a hamburger stand just to the south of Northeast, I believe it was Burger Queen? Never got our orders right, that I do remember.
Okay, I have exhausted my memory for the moment.

RE: A list borrowed from class of 65 Posted Monday, August 29, 2011 01:28 PM The question about the Sundies place across from the school bothers me as we lived directly across from the school on 55th and went in there all the time. My dad knew the owners. I hadn't realized till just now that it had been so long since I logged in and checked us out. Been busy moving and school I guess. |
