Edward Lewis Evans

SEPTEMBER 22, 1939 – DECEMBER 20, 2021

Edward ’Ed’ Evans, 82, died peacefully on December 20th in the presence of family. Ed was the beloved husband and partner to Sally and father to their sons and daughters-in-law Jeff (Jackie), Greg (Pam), and Doug. He was “Granddad" to Jemma, Rachel (Jacob), Nick (Lauren), Parker, Grant, Ryan and great granddad to Maya. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews from across the U.S. whom he cherished. After graduating from Florida State University, he started a life-long career with Pinellas County schools, coaching and mentoring many students and young educators, fondly known to many as “Coach Evans”. He retired as Clearwater High School Principal after a 35-year career. In retirement, Ed spent his days enjoying his grandchildren, playing tennis, golf and traveling with friends.

He was born in Aiken, South Carolina on September 22nd 1939, to Sarah and Johnny Evans. Along with his brother, Pierce, the family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1944. He was a proud graduate of Boca Ciega High School and an accomplished athlete participating in basketball, baseball and track and field. He was active in Luther League and choir at St. Andrews Lutheran Church where he met his wife and life partner Sally Bachman. They were married in 1958 and soon after moved to Tallahassee, where Ed earned his undergraduate degree from Florida State University where he became a lifelong Seminoles fan. Sally and Ed became parents to their three sons Jeff (1961), Greg (1962) and Doug (1970). They were athletes and despite his busy school schedule, Ed always made a point to attend their basketball games, cross country meets and soccer games.

During his years with Pinellas County Schools he taught at Madeira Beach Middle, Northeast High and coached at Seminole and Northeast High Schools. He was once selected to Coach the Florida’s High School South ‘All Star’ basketball team. Ed attained his master's degree from University of South Florida and went on to a career in administration as the Dean of Boys at Northeast High School, Assistant Principal at Countryside High. He was eventually appointed Principal at Clearwater High School, where he ended his career respected and loved by students and staff alike. His family takes great comfort in knowing Ed touched the lives of so many. His family has heard from many former students and co-workers who have shared stories of Ed lifting their spirits or helping to set them on a better path. He lived out his faith through his actions and words. Ed will be missed, but forever remembered.

Mr. Evens was my Gym coach when I was in the 10th grade at Seminole High. He was tough but fair, always wanting the best out of his students. He will be missed.  R. I .P  coach.
