Iva B. Nicholson
Formerly of Norwalk
Iva B. Nicholson, 79, of Windsor, beloved wife for 58 years of Donald E. Nicholson, Sr., passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the McLean Home in Simsbury. Born in Stamford on September 6, 1933, daughter of the late Thomas and Harriet (Hoyt) Benham, she was raised in Stamford and had lived in Norwalk for over 50 years before moving to Windsor four years ago.
Iva worked for over 20 years as the Assistant Finance Officer for the Town of Darien. While working, raising her children, and caring for her parents, she went back to school and graduated with an Associate Degree in Accounting from Norwalk Community College. A faithful Congregationalist for many years, Iva was an active member of the United Church of Christ in Norwalk, where she served on several committees, sang in the choir, and served as the director of the nursery school for 10 years. After moving to Windsor, she joined The First Church in Windsor, Congregational.
In her spare time, she enjoyed taking family ski vacations when her children were growing up, and later golfing with friends and traveling domestically and internationally with her husband, brothers and sisters-in-law. She also enjoyed relaxing at home and playing pinochle with her family and canasta and marjan friends. Most of all, Iva will be remembered for her dedication to her family. Her house was always open to anyone, but she especially enjoyed being with her children, grandchildren, and more recently her great grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Donald E. Nicholson, Jr. of Norwalk; a daughter, Leigh Kuhn and her husband Peter of East Granby; two sisters, Winnifred Chorotas and her husband John of Norwalk, and Helena Ann Starkey of Norwalk; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Kaswer and her husband William of Brookfield, and Helen Nicholson of Rock Hill, SC; seven grandchildren, Stephen C. Quinlan and his wife Erin of Ellington, Colleen M. Quinlan and her significant other, Brian Menzies of Wolcott, Donald E. Vaccaro of Elizabeth, NJ, Lauren M. Vaccaro of Elizabeth, NJ, Jennifer M. McCann and her husband Travis of Bristol, Christopher P. Kuhn and his fiancé, Rita DeVito of Berlin, and Brittany Hallenbeck and her husband, Kyle of Bristol; two great grandchildren, Mason Paul Menzies and Ellen Marie Quinlan; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 12 at 3 pm at The First Church in Windsor, Congregational, 107 Palisado Ave., Windsor. Burial will be private in The First Church Memorial Garden.
Her family has requested that memorial donations be made to The ALS Association Connecticut Chapter, 4 Oxford Road, Unit D4, Milford, CT 06460 or to the First Church in Windsor, Congregational, 107 Palisado Ave., Windsor, CT 06095.
