GEORGE RUSSO, 77, a lifelong resident of Stamford passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice. He was born on February 7, 1934 in Stamford to the late Celestino and Filomena Mattera Russo. George was a graduate of Stamford High School, Class of 1951 and was a Captain of the Stamford Fire Department from 1979 until his retirement in 1996. He also served in the Korean War as a Staff Sergeant in the US Marines.He was always the life of the party and will be dearly missed by all that knew him. George is survived by his loving wife, Joanne Lovell Russo of Stamford, his loving sons, George R. and Ricky Russo of Stamford and his loving daughter, Denise Vartuli and her husband Tony of Stamford; two brothers, Peter Russo and his wife Margaret and Angelo and his wife Lorraine Russo of Stamford; one sister, Eve Elliott of Stamford and a sister in law Mary Russo of Stamford. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Dante, Michael and Nicole Vartuli, Angel Kyek and a great granddaughter Hailee Rabbitt including many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his son, Anthony Russo and three brothers, Frank, Mike and Freddie Russo. A funeral procession will be leaving The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902 on Friday, September 9, 2011 at 9:40 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. Mary's RC Church, 566 Elm Street, Stamford. Entombment will follow at St. John's Mausoleum, Darien. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, September 8, 2011 from 4:00-8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in George's name to The William & Sally Tandet Center, 146 West Broad Street, Stamford, CT 06902.
