ANN (ANNA) MARIE SMITH - (7/9/33 - 5/2/06). Born in 1933, the daughter of Dionisio Vagnone and former Mary Clapes, and the wife of Jon A. Smith, Ann Marie Smith, a Stamford native, passed away on May 2nd after a five year battle with Ovarian Cancer.

Baptized at Sacred Heart Church on Schuyler Avenue, Ann was raised in Stamford's West Side on Wilson Street. Ann attended Stevens Elementary School; Cloonan Junior High School; and in 1951 graduated from Stamford High School. Ann then attended Gibbs Secretarial School. Ann's first employment was with Bartlett Tree Company at their original Canal Street office. She subsequently worked as a receptionist at a doctors office, and as a file clerk in an industrial complex on Fairfield Avenue, all in Stamford, before taking a full time secretarial position with the City of Stamford Planning Department.

In 1957 Ann married Jon A. Smith who was also a member of the Stamford Planning Department. The couple had three children, Dean, Cris & Lauren. As the last of the children entered school, Ann sought re-employment, taking a job as clerk for the contractor constructing the General Electric Credit Company headquarters at Long Ridge Road. As GECC moved into its new building, Ann sought and won a secretarial position with the company in 1970 and retired from the organization after 25 years of service in 1995. After two years of retirement, Ann sought out and secured a part-time position with the Retired Executive Group at GE Capital as secretary to Reginald Jones, GE Company's former CEO and predecessor to Jack Welch, ending her employment in 2003.

Ann was a prolific collector of bisque dolls, loved gardening, sewing and hosting family get-togethers.

Ann is survived by her husband of 49 years, Jon Smith, her children Dean A. Smith of Ridgefield; Cris A. Saunders of Norwalk, and Lauren M. Smith of Stamford; a brother Dennis Vagnone; five grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bennett Cancer Center, Shelburne Road, Stamford, CT 06902.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 6, 2006 at 9:30 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 37 Schuyler Avenue, Stamford, CT. Interment will be conducted in private.
