Update on Class of '66 Scholarship

Hi Class of ’66 members!

I hope this update on our Class Scholarship finds you all safe and well.

Due to the disruptions caused by the SARS Co-V2 pandemic, I was not able to organize our class scholarship awards in the usual fashion.  This year we received 15 applications.  I winnowed them down to six candidates who met the criteria for our scholarships, and then selected two winners who in my judgment had overcome significant obstacles to succeed at Streator High School and who had great financial need and strong academic reports. The winners are Maria Diaz and Nadia Murphy.  Both winners were awarded $2000.00.

Maria Diaz (photo above) plans to attend Northern Illinois University and take Pre-med/Biology with the goal of becoming a surgeon.  Nadia Murphy (photo below) will attend the University of Dubuque, majoring in Human Health Sciences, with the goal of becoming an athletic trainer.  Both winners are very grateful for the support provided by our class.

Also, six previous winners are still in school. They will be considered for follow-up awards for the coming school year, if they provide evidence that they have maintained good grades so far.  I will send you information on these awards later this summer.

If you would like more information about the scholarship, please feel free to contact me.  If you would like to assist with the scholarship awards, there are some tasks that you might enjoy.  Next spring, you could help review scholarship applications. You might also attend the annual scholarship banquet and awards ceremony, usually the first week in May (assuming the Covid-19 Pandemic is over or is controlled in 2021).  If you would like to personally mentor one of the winners that could also be arranged.

If you would like to make a donation, of any size, you can do so by check, or by credit card online.  You can make credit card donations at the Streator Township High School Educational Foundation on the web page of the SHS website:

https://streatorhs.revtrak.net/Donations/#/v/Donation-SHS-Foundation  .

Fill in the amount, select “Class of 1966 Scholarship Fund,” fill in the information form, and then “Add to Cart.”

Checks should be made out to the Streator Township High School Educational Foundation, with SHS Class of 1966 Scholarship Fund in the memo line.  Mail to:

Gifts are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law, and may be made in memory of loved ones.  It is also possible to donate stock to the Foundation, by contacting the Superintendent at 815-672-0545 x505. At this time in our lives, it’s also worthwhile to consider making a provision in your wills or trusts for the Scholarship Fund.

Thank you so much for your support of the scholarship over the years. The current balance in the Scholarship fund, as of June 30, 2020, is $88,443.65.  This means that despite vicissitudes in the market, we can continue with our current practice of giving about $8,000 per year in awards.

Best wishes,

Mary Ellen
