I sat next to Quelia in band...we were the only bass clarinetists. Neither of us were particularly musical and the school wouldn't let us take the instruments outdoors. (I crashed cymbals in the marching band.) The color divide seemed very real that long ago but was soon bridged and we got to be friends. She was a good egg and very smart.
Quelia was a very dear friend and part of a circle of friends through junior high and high school. We all had lots of good times. The color line didn't have too much significance for us. We visited her home, meeting her parents and brother Joe. I know she was upset, however, not to be able to go to the prom because she didn't have a date. She started at NIU intending to be a music major, I think, but a mystery medical condition interfered with her ability to play. She moved to Washington, DC, to meet more people of her own race. I was devestated when I learned that her husband shot her in a murder-suicide. I think of her often and how her life was cut short too early.
when did quelia pass on, cause i think i ran into her in peoria at the credit union, cause this person ask me when i said i was from streator, what year i graduated and went from there and was sure it was her. I know it wasn't barb greenwood, this gal was skinny, about my height and was all excited that i remember a name like hers.

Quelia was in my home room, very very nice, sadly killed by her husband.
