Mary graduated from Ravenswood School of Nursing in Chicago in 1969, receiving her RN diploma. She was employed at Ravenswood Hospital following graduation, then worked in the intensive care unit and coronary care unit at St. James Hospital in Pontiac and St. Mary's in Streator.
She taught nursing for one year at the CPN school in Streator. Upon moving to the Bloomington/Normal area, Mary worked in the office of Dr. McGinnis and Dr. Shonat, followed by work on the surgical floor at Mennonite Hospital. Her career continued for 17 years at Medical Hills Internists, and ended following six years at OSF St. Jesse, from where she retired in July 2009.
Mary was always involved in her church. At one time she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, taught children's church and was a co-sponsor for the Epiphany youth group. Most recently she had been a member of the Adoration Chapel and cherished being a Eucharistic minister, delivering Holy Communion to the people residing at Sugar Creek Alzheimer's Special Care Center. She produced several thousand rosaries that would later be sent to people in areas of need.
In addition, Mary enjoyed crocheting and knitting, creating many wonderful items for other people. She was an avid ISU basketball fan. She loved everyone in her family, thoroughly enjoyed the people she worked with and cherished her friendships.
Mary was a devoted mother, wife and nurse. She enjoyed talking about her home town, Streator, and her Irish heritage.
She will be remembered for her warm smile, her ability to make others laugh, the joy she found in helping others, following her children and their careers, traveling to Phoenix, Las Vegas, Portland and Los Angeles to visit family and friends, and being full of life that made a difference to those around her. Until we meet again, Mary Alice will always be in our hearts and memories.
A special thanks to the doctors, wonderful nurses and co-workers that Mary worked with over the years, the hospice staff, and the many family and friends who did so much to support us throughout. We extend our sincere gratitude for what you have so freely given.
