Scott~ If Abigail has the LOVE of gym let HER do it as long as she wants> I'm also like Tricia in the aspect of when my kids start something they have to finish no matter what. EX: Cache loved basball the 1st few years, then he only liked playing in the games and didn't want to go to practice. We had long talks and after that season he decided he didn't want to play anymore. The next year rolls around and he still doesn't want to play the sport, so I said ok. He has been fine not playing baseball (and ALL his friends play) because he loves football and his motorcycle more. Now, Samantha was on a competition gym team for 2 years and competition cheer in Pine Bluff @ Flip Flop gym. She loved it, but after 2 years of driving back in forth to PB and it was conflicting with her schedule in Stuttgart she had to make a decision on what her goal was. She chose to stay with all her dance, piano (she started this @ age 4 with Mrs. Janie Holt and is 16 and still taking), softball & cheerleading. Just remember this: Don't push your children into something because you want it, do it because they want it. I just know 2 many people that push their kids into doing stuff that it hurts the kids later. Samantha has a very good friend who pushed her self to the MAX!! She was wanting to try out for college cheerleader and so she was going to LR to a gym over there. About 2 weeks ago she was trying a tumble pass and she ended the night with a dislocated knee, torn MCL, torn ACL and a torn minicus (ma-nis-cus)(spell ck. on that) She has surgery on Sept 4th or 5th and this is 9 months of physical therapy. Her senior year and she is out of cheerleading, cheer competition, dance, dance team and Ricebird softball. Look at Shawn Johnson~ she walked into the gym @ age 6 and @ age 16 is at the Olympics with a Gold and 3 silvers. Just let Abigail do it as long as she has the LOVE of the sport. One more thing~ You need to see if you can go in with all of us @ 1:15 that day. They are letting the groups in early see all of them . The show starts @ 3pm.

Shannon~ Everything going great here. Kids are back in school and like Tabitha said more food in the fridge!!

GOOD NIGHT @ EVERYONE! Talk with ya'll 2morrow!

Let me speak out about Abigail Robnett. I sat with Scott every week with our daughters in gymnastic class. His daughter has a MAJOR God given gift. I knew that from the start! My daughter had to work a lot harder than her for sure. I made my daughter complete the year minus the last class due to other reasons. At that point, she chose to not return the next year. Although my daughter was good, she and Abiagil were on a team at 5 years old that you had to try out for, she was struggling to keep up. So at the end of last year we decided to not take this year.

I think Scott you are struggling with how much time is spent at the gym...correct me if I am wrong here. She is at a level that she as at the gym more, bc she is on a competive level. I think she for sure has a passion for this, so as I have said before I think you go until you feel that it is hurting your daughter in some way. I know that God will guide you. Just the other day, my daughter said I wish I was taking gymnastics again this year, so I am struggling too with all of this, bc I thought that chapter was closed!! I also know that if I open the door again this year we have to go and complete the whole year...man this whole parenting thing is hard sometimes. We want our children to do so well, but the way most sports are going they are over the top and I am afraid there is going to be some major burn out. So this is when we have to pray and listen to our inner-voice and make the best decision.

I LOVED HEARING all of your thoughts on this, and love the parents that can help us who are a few steps behind in parenting.

Scott so sorry about Abigail not wanting you to walk her in!! Elizabeth Grace wants me to walk her in every day(I hope it lasts until she graduates(all the moms of teens are laughing here)...Abigail is very independent, but at the same time she would come up and sit by me at recess and want to connect with me in a "baby girl" sort of way.... I have been up since 3:00 and a little crazy now..so shout at everyone later

Scott- I can tell you that Haley is at the age that I am definitely NOT cool. Her friends seem to think I am (or maybe I just think I am) but she gets embarrased if I even have the radio on when I drop her off! But she did tell me the other day that when we take her to college I better not just drop her off and leave so I guess she still clings to me somewhat! Dylan is very proud to announce that he is a mama's boy. I am sure this will change as he gets older so I will hold on to that for now!

I know what you're going through. From my experiences so far, I say if you know they truly love what they are doing and it doesn't hurt or affect anything, let them go for it. Like Beth said, let all the extras come as rewards for taking care of business on top of being the freak in gymnastics. My husband and I have been in this battle for about 4 years now. My middle son, Jordan, plays AAU basketball. For those who aren't familiar with it, it's a very gruelly and time consuming sport. This year it ran from February to August. We have to travel to Little Rock atleast 2 days a week for practice and then play in tournaments pretty much every weekend. Most are local and some are out of state. We told our son once he starts he has to finish. He has never quit! Never wanted to quit! I think it's good for them. It builds character, helps them stay focus, learn teamwork, lets them know it's not all about them. Sacrificies. This is some of the stuff he has had to deal with. On the other hand, my baby boy, almost 6'0, 250lbs, 13 years old does not like to put in the practice time but loves to show up for game day. That's the one I have to push. I told him if I showed up at a practice or game and saw him warming the sideline, it was gonna be me and him. He must have heard me because he's in the 8th grade and starting on the 9th grade line with his brother. So, just sit back and watch her, you can tell if it gets to be too much. If that's the case, just take a few steps back and go with the flow. That's what we did with our oldest and now he's playing football at Ouachita Baptisit University on scholarship. Just have fun! Keep it that way! No pressure on the babies!

Scott- lots of advice huh? you really got a topic started! Great! now my 2 cents. Our rule is one athletic activity at a time. Our girls are big soccer players. Grace is a goalie and Corbinn is a fast forward. They have each tried other things in the past (one at a time) finished the season and then chose to move on to other sports. They have done dance, gymnastics, tennis, golf, basketball etc. Corbinn did not like basketball and chose to go on to Classic Soccer. She travels to out of town games and tournaments etc. She is good at it though. It is her choice AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT EFFECT HER WORK AT SCHOOL! Grace has not had the option to try out for Classic yet. She has played some basketball and likes it a lot. The seasons are not the same so she can do both AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT EFFECT HER SCHOOL WORK. I guess my philosophy is that if they are capable-let them take it as far as they can if they love what they are doing. If they stop loving it-let them stop at the end of the season/year. SUPPORT but don't PUSH, but they have to participate 100%...you have to practice to play! Save the PUSHING for when they are not getting the acceptable grades in school! GOOD LUCK!

I know everyone remembers Jeffrey George. His brother Jimmy died yesterday. He had a stroke about a year ago and Jeffrey was taking care of him pretty much 24/7. Sometime Tuesday night Jimmy shot himself. He said he just couldn't go on anymore. Jeffrey is really torn up. I haven't seen him, but I know he is still living in Humphrey.

Jil Bailey (Amaden)

i will pray for JEffrey and his family, that is sad.

i hadnt thought of the name Jeffrey George in forever.

i had a student in Character ed last year that looked just like Jeffrey used to ( i am just realizing this), and his name was Jeffrey Jordan, but i had a habit of calling him Jeffrey George all the time for some reason. i am cracking up!! it just hit me that he looked like him, and Bailey kept saying all last year, WHY DO YOU KEEP CALLIGN HIM JEFFREY GEORGE!!! and i couldn't put my finger on it, it just rolled off my tongue like that, NOW I KNOW, my mind was thinking jeffrey george from highschool!

21/08/08 04:33 PM #712

Beth Carter (Dawson)

That makes me so sad about Jimmy George. I remember hearing about him being in the hospital or nursing home or something because Teresa's little brother was friends with him. Bethany, if you don't mind, would you tell Jeffery I am so sorry and that I am thinking of him. I don't know if he would remember me or not, but I know he is feeling so much guilt and sadness!! Losing a family member to suicide is very hard!!

On a lighter note....I am cracking up at my "advice" about Abigail. It didn't even really make sense. I am terrible at writing or trying to express my thoughts. Anyway, everyone had good advice....my thoughts now, just let that baby girl flip and tumble her heart out. If it screws her up, just pay for counseling later. That is what I plan to do.

I love hearing from everyone. Sharanda....I loved hearing your thoughts. I bet you love watching those boys play sports. You seem like a great mom!

21/08/08 10:05 PM #713

Scott Robnett

Ok first of all....thanks guys so much for the advice. Yes Beth, even you....and just so you know it DID make sense. Ashley, that was awesome of you to say of Abigail. We think she is a natural at it too, but she is practicing....hang on to your hats.... twice a week for 2 1/2 hours per practice. I know it is a lot, but she is improving at a rapid pace. Is that too much at 6? She does know that if she doesn't do well in school that she won't get to continue.

Sharanda, girl how are you? Sounds to me like you have your hands there too, just like the rest of us. What position does your son play at OBU? Details dear, details! You know I keep up with all those old AIC schools.

So sorry to hear about Jeffrey's brother. Bethany, please relay to him that he is in all of our prayers.

Beth, I will be in Memphis week after next. Any way you and I and Roddy go have dinner? Let me know!

Bethany~This is so sad and I'm praying for Jeffery's family. My 1st cousin, Brooks, (my mothers~brothers only daughter)shot her self after she graduated High School. That was the hardest funeral I've ever been 2!!! She shot herself with a 357 under her chin. She had just told her mom that she was headed to the house and when Aunt Deanne got home she went to Brooks room and found her dead. If you see him let him know that our whole class is praying for him.

Good night 2 all! talk 2 ya'll tomorrow

Scott R~ Poor kid! Just a jokie joke.. Hell, we drive my oldest to Benton twice a week to play softball. I think as long as EVERYONE likes doing it then it's GREAT! Just enjoy life with them. That doesn't mean I haven't thrown a bat or ball at them but over all we enjoy the sport!

22/08/08 08:35 AM #716

Sharanda Hobbs (Daniels)

OMG Scott! Don't pay any attention to the Class of 89. If you relay any of this to your daughter, she will be so confused that she will never want to turn a flip, back bend, or double whatever. Forgive us, because we are all just blabbing because we all have kids and we think because we're older, we're wiser. My son plays wideout, he will be starting this year. He got alot playing time last year on special teams. We are Gulf South Conference now.

Beth- Football is more fun when they are smaller. When they get bigger, there is always someone on the other team bigger and I'm in the stands yelling " GET OFF MY BABY".

Good Morning Everybody!!!

Sharanda~ I can't imagine watching my son out there going up against bigger kids. Some friends of ours youngest son was the quaterback for his high school and every Friday his mom(our friend) would bake cookies for the offensive line with a note that said please protect my son tonight!! She said they were her best friends because they took care of her son. I thought that was so fun!

Scott
I am embarrased to say this, but hopefully it will make you feel better. Jack practiced 10 HOURS a week the first two weeks of football and now they will practice 4 HOURS a week until football season is over!!!! I have to say, we LOVE doing this. Our whole family is there watching and Ava is playing with the other kids, so it works out for us. I think what your doing with Abigail is fine. She's got parents who love her and have her best interest at heart....she'll be fine. Go for it Miss Abigail...just tell her to remember all of us when she is at the olympics. All of us that gave you such sound advice will be wanting tickets to come watch her.
Roddy and I would love to go to dinner!! I told him the other day that you were coming to town. We can talk parenting. No pressure though....if it works out call me. My number is 901-752-0756.

Teresa- Be nice! Where on your farm are you guys building? I am going to be down there this weekend, and may drive by.

Sharanda- It does make me feel better when I hear people's different perspectives on things. It is like anything else...you take bits and pieces from everyone's advice, and formulate your own plan.

Saranie- Where are you? You go off, get married, and we don't hear from you anymore? Jeez, sounds like EVERY guy I know that has just been recently married!

Holt- The look on Dalton's face in that picture is 1,000,000,000 % JASON HOLT! We laughed for 20 minutes when we saw that. I do have a question....where was Lori when you were at Hooters?

Beth- I will call you before I come to make sure you have plenty of time to plan around it. Let me know what days aren't good for you guys!

22/08/08 10:41 AM #719

Jil Bailey (Amaden)

Scott, i think if they like something, let them do it. it's good for them to feel successful and a little competitive side is also good. My kids are in several activities and they LOVE it. Sports, cheer, etc, is around here, but i drive them to guitar in Little Rock every week, also, because music is important to me, for them to learn. And they love it.

Also, teaching high school has shown me that kids HAVE to BELONG. They need to have SOMETHING they do, whether it is sports, band, class officer, FFA, church youth group, whatever, but they NEED a group of friends that have something in common. And soemthing they feel they are good at. I have some students that didn't have parents when they were little to encourage them to try activities, take them there, practice with them at home. And they worry me, because they don't have a place to fit in. I have tried to get them involved, but they usually don't last in the activities because their parents don't care enough to work with them, attend activities, etc.

My mom always encouraged me to have the kids in pee wee sports, dance, etc. and i USED to feel like they did too much, and I would say , "i am not making them do anythign when they get older, if they don't want to.", i want them to be happy." that drove her crazy, and i realize now,(and she knew all along) that they ARE so happy when they are in activities, and have that sense of accomplishment.

I have also seen in high school, that activities keep them away from a lot of things they shouldn't be doing. People go on and on about how kids have too many activites, etc. but i feel, that if they are happy, and enjoy being busy, and most important, they keep God first in life, then, great for them!

Scott. Lori was there to. She was watching me look at those things too.

Scott, I guess we are going to have to take lessons from Holt. It wasn't long ago he was talking about how old Lori was and now he's watching hooters at hooters with her watching. If I did either one of those things with my young vibrant woman (yes i've been trained to say it just like that) knowing about it she would beat me about the head and shoulders. Hope you guys are doing good.

Lori just knows what those Hooters girls don't hold a candle to her!!

Shannon Morgan (Mayville)

Hi everyone,
Sharanda-it is good to see you on here. I was in the bank last week-I should of come by and said hello.

As for the giving advice about kids-well, I don't have kids so I try and keep my opinions to myself-which is hard sometimes. I was reading what Jil said-it is good to be in everything there is to be in to stay out of trouble. I can remember every day of the week having something to do after school. It builds character and I thank my parents every day for pushing me-it has made me be what I am today. Going into homes and dealing with patients that have those 20 year olds still at home, mooching off of their parents-you get the picture-it is annoying to me. You would be suprised what goes on behind closed doors....

Everybody have a good weekend...going to shop for furniture for the new house.

Shannon

Looking at Hotters

Jason, why would you EVER feel the need to go somewhere and look at HOOTERS. That's like Santa Clause feeling the need to go to Toys R Us.

24/08/08 06:00 PM #727

Hey everybody
I am so lazy today. Roddy and I both took a nap this afternoon and kept sending the kids away. I think they watched tv all afternoon. To make it worse...it is a beautiful day outside that we totally missed!!
Scott, I am cracking up at your analogy. That is hilarious.
I'm going to miss the olympics..how about you guys?
