One of my all time favorite coaches. He would pitch batting practice and the only one who could come close to hitting his pitches was Larry Morphis. He would make the pitchers run around the old baseball field, where the girls play softball now, unless they had fielding or batting practice. His philosophy was that a pitcher pitched with his legs. He knew what he was talking about because he had pitched in the College World Series. I remember when he first came to town, he drove to the old Babe Ruth baseball field to watch a game. Most of the people there knew who he was even though he was new in town. I know I tried to show off playing during that game.
I agree with Manny, that Coach was the finest young Coach and man to come to THS, not only for his great coaching ability, but as a young friend, who always gave you his ear, if you had a problem, he didnt hesitate to try and solve them for you.I remember when I got kicked out of school for drinking, and lost two sports for the rest of the year. This was a really bad time for me and Russ ARY. He convinced us that baseball was just a fun game that last a short time. But standing up and taking our punishment, (because we were in the wrong) is what makes a young boy learn how to become a man, and that will stay with us for ever. I'll never forget you Coach
Without a doubt I agree with Manny and Larry totally about how Coach Humpert taught and coached. He challenged all of us, both in the classroom and on the field. His wife Cheryl (sp?) was a fantastic Lady, and so was her Mom who was our lunchroom and study hall "Mom"....Barbara Warner, who lived right behind me in Tehachapi. I am saddened to learn of Coach's passing, but I can smile knowing he brought a lot of stability and insight to a lot of our lives.
