Jack Sheedy is the author of "Sting of the Heat Bug" and "It Bears Repeating: Twice-Told Tales of John P. Sheedy." He is a feature writer, hard news reporter, essayist and playwright. His honors include awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and the New England Newspaper and Press Association; in 2000, his play "Guardrail Nikes," won the Connecticut One-Act Play Festival competition. His articles have appeared in numerous regional and state publications and have been widely syndicated. Sheedy is the News Editor of The Catholic Transcript, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Hartford. He lives in northwestern Connecticut with his wife, the poet and journalist Jean Sands.

Do you have a bucket list? What's on that list?

1) Visit Ireland.
2) Drive across the United States.

High points to your life since high school?

My marriage to Jean Sands, who continues to inspire me to write and to live a good life except when she's not looking.

What do you do in your spare time?

I used to love to play chess and to act in community theater, but surprisingly the older I get the less time I seem to have for these outlets. I continue to write, however, which was always my first love.

If you like to travel? (i.e., What is your favorite place to go? What is your favorite vacation spot?)

I scratched off my bucket list "Swim in the Pacific Ocean" two years ago. I thought it would be on the West Coast, probably in California, but I got a bonus: it was in Oahu, Hawaii! And it was in December!

Do you have a favorite vacation spot?

Honolulu, if I can ever return.

What would we be surprised to know about you?

I'm actually seven feet tall.

Favorite high school hangout:

Aside from Doyle's Pharmacy? I was a Rah-Rah, so I frequented the Farm Shop more often than Scarpelli's. But it looks like Scarpelli's outlasted both Doyle's and the Farm Shop.

Favorite teacher or most inspirational teacher and why:

I liked Mr. Wheeler, who taught me a lot about music and encouraged me to enter talent shows that did NOT require musical ability -- because, though I sang in the chorus, I sang badly. I also liked Muff, because -- well, because he is Muff.

Any words of wisdom or favorite inspirational slogans?

As I say in my 2012 memoir "Sting of the Heat Bug," troubles WILL happen that we can neither foresee nor forestall, and the miracles we pray or wish for may not happen the way we want them to. Instead, other, better miracles WILL happen. Keep a sense of humor.

Audrey, congrats on your book about Judson Philips! He directed me in "The Odd Couple" at Torrington Civic Theatre in 1972, and he invited me and other community theater actors to volunteer at Sharon Playhouse, in return for which we got to see summer stock plays like "The Gingerbread Lady" and "End of Summer," actors like young Olympia Dukakis, then an unknown. At a cast party for "Odd Couple," he said, "No one ever said, 'I'm going to hear a play.' It's a visual art form above all." His direction was superb. He told the actor playing Oscar to face away from the audience and project a specific emotion without the audience being able to see his face. He told the women portraying the Pigeon sisters to "make every man in the audience want you." If I had known you were working on this book, I would have asked to be interviewed.

Linda Cavanaugh, another '65 alum (nee DeMichiel) reached out to me in August and invited me to be a guest on her "Eye 2 Eye" segment of Nutmeg TV, a cable station based in Farmington. This is the result: http://nutmegtv.org/video-on-demand/single/?id=32353

Remember our excursions to Amenia? Getting stopped on the way back at Cornwall Bridge and smoking cigars to mask the booze odor.
