Bernard and his siblings were born in Iowa, but his parents moved to Tucson when the children were young. He was survived by his younger brother, Michael, who died in 2019, and his younger sisters, Kathleen and Jeannette.  He moved to Bethesda, Maryland and was living there at the time of his death on August 1, 2014.
