Roger Alan Evans

Former Tucsonan Roger Evans was killed when a military cannon used for avalanche control accidentally exploded near Lake Tahoe, CA. Evans was a fire management specialist with the US Forest Service who specialized in avalanche control. This past summer, Roger was part of a team that used computer models to predict the advance of fire fought by the Forest Service in 4 northwestern states. Evans had been with the service for 15 years.
Evans was born in Ames, IA, and moved to Tucson with his family in 1963. He was a band major at Catalina High School, graduating in 1970. He attended the UA, earning a degree in watershed management in 1977. He was also a member of the UA band.
Evans was an award winning Eagle Scout and belonged to a youth group at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 400 E University Blvd.
A memorial service was held Monday in Truckee. No services are planned here his parents said.
Roger is survived by his wife, Linda; two daughters, Sara and Becky, of Truckee; two brothers, Robert Evans of San Jose, CA, and Thomas Evans of Fort Hood, TX; a sister Susan Holstad of Phoenix, and his parents, Daniel and Frances of Tucson.
