Fatal shot ends routine for night owl visiting pal
By Gabrielle Fimbres, Tucson Daily Citizen, August 3, 1990
Michael Fisher was a night owl, and some evenings, after his wife of six months was asleep, he would drive to the neighborhood 7-Eleven to pass the time with his good friend, market clerk Alan Chick. Fisher, 40, never made it home yesterday morning. He was gunned down at the convenience market, 3501 E Grant Rd, about 4:20 am. Police believe he was one of three victims of a 51-year-old recluse who lived nearby.
Minutes before the gunman killed Fisher and seriously wounded Chick, the market clerk, he shot another 24-year-old man to death, police said.
Fisher was remembered by his wife and a close friend yesterday. “He was a great man,” said his wife, Judy. “He was a kind person.” The two were married seven months ago after dating for six years, she said.
Steve Owen, a close friend of Fisher’s for 18 years has been staying with the couple during the summer. Owen spoke softly about his friend at the Fisher’s modest white home with turquoise trim on North Camilla Blvd, a few blocks from where Fisher was killed. “I was best man at his wedding,” Owen said. He related that Judy Fisher woke him at about 7:00am and told him her husband had not come home. She asked him for a ride to work. While the two were getting ready, Judy was listening to the radio and heard of the shootings. She and Owen drove quickly to the 7-Eleven, where they saw Mike’s car and learned of his death. Owen 33, said he and Fisher had been friends for 18 years and they met in the neighborhood.
Fisher’s mother, Pearl Allen, moved to the neighborhood with her only son, Mike, and three daughters in the 1960’s. “She worked in a bank and raised the children alone. I hate to see this happen.” a neighbor said. Allen reportedly was vacationing in Wisconsin yesterday.
Owen said Fisher was self employed and did glass work, restoration of antiques and worked on cars. He had a teenage daughter from a previous marriage. He also said that Fisher, a Catalina High graduate, enjoyed target shooting. Police said there was no report of a gun found on Fisher. Owen described him as “an outgoing man with many friends.” He said the Fishers were a good couple and had fun together. “Fisher was kind of a night owl who frequently drove to the store to visit Chick, who worked the graveyard shift.”
