I was always in awe of Sonja, who seemed so much more mature and sophisticated than the rest of us. How I wished back then that I could give that impression! Even the name "Sonja Aven" had sort of a Hollywood ring to it.

Sonja and I both got in trouble for having cocktails (my introduction to Margaritas) while we were on a school trip to Monterey, Mexico, with the Spanish Club-- Ernie Holland ratted us out to Squats when we got back home. To this day I don't know how Mr. Holland found out. I guess "las paredes tienen ojos" (the walls have eyes).

Sonya was pretty serene about it-- nothing seemed to get her goat.

Sonja & I were very close; spent a lot of time together & we went steady for a while our Junior year at John Tyler. Many good times & memories. I was deeply saddened to hear of her passing.

I liked Sonja mucho.  She was great to have as a friend.  Funny, great sense of humor, and a mind wackier and more twisted than my own.  Vaya con dios, querida amiga, from Akers at Roberts and John Tyler.
