Tyler native and businessman, Edward “Ed” Greer Barry Jr., 88, passed peacefully from this world into heaven on November 22, 2024.
Ed was born September 12, 1936, in Tyler, Texas. He was a graduate of Tyler High class of ‘54 and attended TJC before transferring to TCU where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business in 1958. He graduated from UT Tyler with a master’s degree in psychology in 1992.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Ed climbed his way from delivery driver to owner and operator of B&B Meat Company and Barry’s Seafood. Following the sale of the meat company, Ed enjoyed several endeavors including working as an operator in the oil & gas industry, counseling, and sales. In his younger days, he officiated high school football and basketball in the Tyler Chapter. Through all his years, while watching a football game on TV, Ed could immediately spot a foul—sometimes even before the officials! Ed had his private pilot license and enjoyed flying with family and friends. His favorite destination was Rockport, Texas for deep sea fishing.
Ed was a third-generation member of First Christian Church where he held numerous positions including Chairman of the Board, Elder, Deacon, youth leader and chair of various committees. As a boy, he enjoyed many summers attending Camp Underwood in Athens, Texas, — an experience which he credits for the acquisition of many of his leadership abilities. Ed had his license as a lay minister and served many small Disciples of Christ churches throughout East Texas including Rusk, Tatum, and Selman City. His family has many fond memories of waiting for dad to arrive home from church on a Sunday afternoon so they could enjoy an outing together at the Tyler Petroleum Club.
A proud graduate of TCU, Ed was not only a member of the TCU Alumni Association for over 50 years, but an avid football fan rooting for the Fighin’ Frogs through good and bad seasons! If he was unable to watch the game live stream, he would record it to watch later in the day—everyone knew not to tell him the score until he could enjoy the game himself.
As a young boy, Ed was a member of the “Grove Street Gang” helping rid the streets of Tyler of “German spies” after WWII. He had fond memories of playing in the McClendon House, which was close to his Grove Street upbringing. As an adult, he became a vital member of the McClendon House Board helping to restore the home to its former glory. To help raise much needed funds for repairs and operation, Ed helped initiate the McClendon House Flag Program providing flags to Tyler residents and businesses on patriotic holidays throughout the year. He became affectionately known as the “flag man” to many in the community.
One of Ed’s greatest accomplishments was beating alcoholism in April 2000. He would have received his 25-year chip in April—achieving a quarter century of sobriety!! His family looked forward to Ed’s birthday night each year, praising him for the legacy he left to his family. He became a sponsor to many members in AA, helping to lead others to a life of sobriety. He was the President of the AA Alpha Corporation for many years and was so honored recently that he was voted president once again despite his illness. His pride in this work gave him the drive to grow stronger so he could continue in that role.
Ed was an avid storyteller. He never met a stranger and was quick to share a story from events spanning all seasons of his life. Anyone who spent time with Ed has heard him say, “I have a story to tell...” He loved history and had a history book level memory of historical or political events. He and Jan were able to travel to Washington D.C. to witness the inauguration of Louie Gohmert. He also had an uncanny ability to predict elections. He was thrilled that he lived long enough to see his last election prediction come true.
Preceding Ed in death are his parents, Ed and Maude Buckingham Barry, brother David Barry and daughter Holly Barry.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Jan Allen Barry, daughters Kay Davis and Jill Wallace and husband Mike Wallace; grandchildren, Tiffany Land, Austin Davis, Madeline Claiborne and husband Jalen Claiborne, Callie Parrish and husband David Parrish, Whitney Smalley and husband Adam Smalley, Lacey Wallace and fiancé Jack Toomey; great-grandchildren, Kaylie Land, Zia Claiborne, Hallie Parrish, Cameron Parrish and Cooper Smalley; sister Martha Ewing and husband Mac Ewing; brother-in-law Rick Allen and wife Melinda Allen; sister-in-law Alma Allen; nieces and nephews, Ben Allen and wife Ginger, Ashley Allen Choate and husband Tim, Veronica Allen, and Vanessa Allen; and many, many cousins.
A memorial service was held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at First Christian Church, 4202 S. Broadway, with Senior Minister Dr. Chris Pulliam officiating with Rev. Ron Byrd assisting. Reception to follow. There was a family graveside burial at 10:00 am at Rose Hill Cemetery prior to the memorial service.
Pallbearers include Ricky Davis, Mike Wallace, Austin Davis, David Parrish, Jalen Claiborne and Adam Smalley. Honorary pallbearers include David Moore, Dennis Strong, George Tefteller, and James Goodman.
Special thanks to Dr. Michael Ashigbi at Hope Cancer Clinic, David McCaskill, ACNP, the Christus Heart Failure Clinic team, and the staff at Hospice of East Texas, especially nurse Tammy, who cared for him in his final days.

Kenneth Ray Petty - Brother of Bynum Petty
1945-2024
Kenneth Ray Petty, born in Troup, Texas in 1945, peacefully passed away in Magnolia, Texas on February 25, 2024 at the age of 78. Ken had overcome many things in his life, but this unexpected and brief battle with cancer was not to be one of them.
Though not the studious sort to begin with, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. Growing into his academic ability, he added to this a masters and then a doctorate degree from Texas A&M University. He worked as a drafting professor at Texas A&M and was a proud Aggie, wearing his Aggie ring until his death.
On October 1, 1966, Ken exchanged vows with Nancy (Lewis) in the Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, Houston, Texas.
He rarely spoke of his time as an Army Combat Medic in the delta region of Vietnam in 1968. From this service, he received a Purple Heart medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Bronze Star with a “V” device for valor and heroism.
Ken and his family moved to Utah in 1981 where Ken became a professor at Utah State University and then worked at ATK Thiokol as a senior engineer with the space shuttle program.
Ken had a passion for old cars and he showcased his Corvettes at various car shows and the Cache Valley Cruise In. He relished watching car races and even participated in racing himself. Ken found solace in nature, often taking leisurely walks along the canal by Lundstrom Park and enjoyed capturing the beauty of wildlife and landscapes through his camera lens. Ken was a private person and preferred small groups to large gatherings, but loved his family and communicated with them though his sometimes daily nature-photo e-mails. He would often name his animal subjects and found pleasure in capturing them with his camera.
A culinary enthusiast, Ken often joked about opening “Ken’s Southern Cooking Café,” delighting friends and family with his specialties like chili, pork stew, and frittatas, each infused with his secret ingredient, which he challenged others to guess.
Among his cherished experiences, Ken treasured his 19 seasons working at Yellowstone National Park, a place he held dear. He took thousands of pictures of the scenery and animals there and his long-lasting impact on the park can be seen in the many wood projects he worked on in several of the lodges.
Ken is preceded in death by his parents, Bertha Mae Murphy and Roy W.C. Petty. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy (Lewis), brother Bynum, children, Karen (Craig) West, Mark (Sherrie Boyle), and Eric (Jen Lowry); 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
A celebration of Ken’s life will be held on a hill in Avon, Utah on a sunny afternoon in the spring.

Born in Palestine, Texas, on December 19, 1943, Raymond’s life was a tale of marvelous experiences, centered around his extraordinary dedication to family, friends, hard work, and the pursuit of his passions.
Raymond graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and continued his education at Tyler Jr. College, laying the foundation for a life of self-driven success. Raymond made his mark in both flooring and real estate, leaving behind a legacy of brilliance and absolute perseverance.
Conversations with Raymond were at times pleasantly predictable in that you could always count on him telling you about his adventurous motorcycle trips, the new motor he put in his 1955 Chevy, the joy and camaraderie he found during his daily visits to the Dallas Athletic Club, how the horses would go wild with excitement at the sound of his truck horn heading toward the farm, the words of pride that would light up a room as he shared the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, and he really loved the simple pleasures like going to lunch.
Raymond will not only be remembered for his endless achievements, but for his impassioned spirit that fueled his every endeavor and the kindness he shared with those who needed it most. He led a life that can only be described as one heck of a remarkable journey. In honoring his memory, may we all strive to make the world a better place, just as he did in his own extraordinary way.

Judith Ellen Miller {Wife of Mike Miler}
January 15, 1946 - July 24, 2023
Ellen Miller, beloved wife, amazing sister and loving mother and grandmother passed away peacefully July 24, 2023 at St. David’s hospital in Austin, Texas.
Ellen was born to Dorothy and Captain Jack Nelson (USA), on January 15, 1946 in Gilmer, Texas. She was told it snowed over 4 inches that day (a rare event for Texas).
One of four children, Ellen spent her early years in the Bel Air area of Houston and Conroe, Texas, where she enjoyed many outdoor adventures with her younger brother, Danny exploring the piney woods of east Texas. Ellen loved spending quiet time in nature, observing all the beauty that surrounded her. She was also a voracious reader, with an acute interest in Eleanor Roosevelt, as well as an avid gardener for most of her 77 years. The family moved to Shreveport, Louisiana in 1958. Ellen graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in 1964. In high school Ellen was an officer in the ROTC and active in many clubs.
Ellen attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas where she met her future husband, the Reverend Dr. Michael N. Miller. Ellen and Mike were married in Shreveport, Louisiana on October 2, 1965. They were married for almost 58 years. Upon her husband’s graduation from Baylor, the young newlyweds moved to Hubbard, Texas where Mike taught school for several years to earn money to attend Seminary.
In 1967 Ellen and Mike moved to Austin, Texas where their first child, Sarah, was born at St. David’s hospital. Upon graduation from seminary, they moved to England for a short time where they lived in Southampton and were able to travel. Returning to Texas, they moved to Alpine where their son Nelson was born in 1972. After Alpine, and nine years in Odessa, Texas the family then moved to College Station, Texas for fourteen years before settling down in Wimberley, Texas.
An avid reader and life-long learner, Ellen returned to college and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1991, with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Ellen taught school in Navasota, Texas until she and Mike moved to the lovely hill country outside Austin, where they built a beautiful home and enjoyed many happy years “on the hill” in Wimberley, Texas. It was there that she could immerse herself in nature and watch her favorite British television shows, especially Masterpiece Theatre and other programs. Ellen chose the land, drew the house plans, and worked closely with the builder on their forever home. Ellen was active in the Wimberley community, volunteering for hospice and the local nursing home, and making new friends throughout her twenty-nine years living in the hill country. She loved to bird watch and feed all the amazing wildlife around their home. Ellen also loved to travel, especially to visit and spend time with her three grandchildren.
Ellen is preceded in death by her brothers David and PFC Daniel Nelson (USMC), and her parents. Ellen is survived by her husband, Mike Miller, her daughter Sarah (Miller) and Dulaney Barclay, her son Nelson and his wife Erika, her sister Rebecca (Nelson) and Scott Bauer, and three grandchildren Daniel and Lydia Barclay, and Victoria Miller. William Haskell Nelkin {Husband of Pat Forman Nelkin)
William Haskell Nelkin, born June 15,1936, died on Wednesday, November 23, 2022.
Willy grew up in Houston, and spent many days playing sports at the Jewish Community Center on Hermann Drive. He graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1954. For the remainder of his life, he remained close to the friends he gathered.
Willy attended Texas A&M University, graduating in 1958 with a degree in Animal Husbandry, and remained an uncompromising Aggie for the rest of his life. In 1963, William met Patricia Forman of Tyler, TX. They were married the following June, and for the next 58 years journeyed together through raising their children Lane and Libby, operating real estate and retail businesses, and attending collectors shows in pursuit of their shared interest in antique advertising memorabilia. Along the way, their home was beautifully furnished by Pat, showered with collectibles, and infused with Pat’s inspired great cooking.
William worked at the Nelkin Packing Company as salesman until the company was sold. He earned his commercial real estate license, and transacted numerous investment property deals while vice-president of Shefman Investments. Sustained by his winning track record, encouraged by his wife, Bill ventured into the commercial real estate business on his own, as CEO of Nelkin Properties, and confidently and patiently navigated the turbulent waves and crashes of Houston’s growth in the 1980s.
Emboldened by the expansion of their collectibles and the passion of other collectors and enthusiasts whom they met at antique advertising events, Bill and Pat launched their retail store, Cola Collection, which they operated at Memorial City mall and Rice Village. They built long-lasting relationships with many of their clients and customers, and endeavored to locate rare, unique, special additions for their fellow collectors.
Retired from retail, but still trading memorabilia, William and Pat had ample time to enjoy their grandsons, Zane and Zander, teaching the important lessons, like the alphabet and numbers, then reading and math, and the importance of loving the Aggies.
William lived a full measure of years, appropriately preceded by his parents Morris Nelkin and Belle Nelkin Margoliner, maternal grandparents Harry and Miriam Galperin, and in-laws Lewis Forman and Fannie Forman Hochman.
He is survived by his beautiful bride of 58 years, Patricia, children Lane Nelkin, and Libby & Andrew Mintz, grandchildren Zane and Zander Nelkin and their mother Dora Nelkin, his siblings Rae Uzick (Max), Leon Nelkin (Renata), and Tina Nelkin (Glynda), sister-in-law Marsha Orloff (Gary), devoted close friends, and numerous cousins.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Martha Lewis Marshall, aka Sweetheart, aka Big Time’s Handler, who passed away on Monday, May 1, 2023 at the age of 80 with her loving family at her side.

After high school, she followed her sister to the University of Texas where she immediately fell in love with the love her life, Robert “Big Time” Marshall and then fast-tracked to a Doctorate in Mrs. with highest honors in raising remarkable children and grandchildren. She went on to have a successful career as a loving and caring mother, wife, and the best grandmother, affectionately known as Sweetheart.
Sweetheart was highly respected in her field and took her position as matriarch very seriously. Although she suffered from debilitating arthritis, she never missed a chance to write her classic five-hundred word texts of encouragement and faith to all of her children and grandchildren. Sweetheart was deeply committed to her family and wore that commitment as a badge of honor each and every day.
Sweetheart was passionate about her Christian faith and her politics. Never mind the position you might have brought to the discussion, it was her duty to convince you that her path was the correct one and that you should follow. President Trump will certainly miss her.
Sweetheart was also deeply devoted to her close friends and extended family. She rarely missed an opportunity to gather with any branch of her very large family tree and she pulled groups of friends together as often as she could. Bobby Joe Manziel Jr. (Brother of Paul Manziel)
November 16, 1938 - October 27, 2022
Bobby Joe Manziel, Jr, age 83, of Tyler went to his heavenly home on Thursday, October 27, 2022. He was born on November 16, 1938 in Baton Rouge, LA to Bobby Joseph Manziel and Dorothy Nolan Manziel. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Nolan Edward Manziel, his niece Deborah Lynn Manziel, and nephew Billy Daryl Pyron II.
Bobby is survived by his children, Bobby Joe Manziel III, Lisa Manziel, Michael Manziel, Jayne Manziel, Mary Sue Cooper and husband Henry, Jennifer Chlapek and husband Paul, Lyndee Manziel, and Robert Howard and wife Renee; grandchildren, Jonte’, Matthew, Annabelle, Michaela, Michael, Hayley, Hope, Harley, Taylor, Josef, Nicolas, Brandon and Wyatt; and 14 great-grandchildren; siblings, Paul Manziel, Merigale Manziel Pyron, Dottie Manziel Frank and husband Bill of Houston, Vicki Manziel Heath of Dallas, and Gloria Saleh, also of Tyler. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Ashley, Victor Avelar, Henry Cooper, Robert Contreras, Paul Chlapek, Michael Manziel Jr, Taylor Manziel, and Rick Shamsee. Honorary pallbearers will be Samuel George, Stuart Humphries, Gary Wadkins, and Wayne Wilson.
Bobby graduated from Tyler High School, and attended college at Tyler Jr. College and North Texas State University. Among other organizations, Bobby has held memberships at the Cedars of Lebanon, Tyler Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau, BMI, ASCAP, Texas Cattlemen’s Association, and American Thoroughbred Horse Association. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where he served as an altar boy growing up.
In just his early twenties, he was determined and brave and opened Highway Auto Parts, a business buying and selling auto parts. He also was an owner of a motor and transmission exchange shop and paint and body shop, all in different locations. During that time, he bought a 1948 Ford Coupe, modifying it by criss-crossing Mercury Ford and after-market parts which allowed multi-carburetors. This gave it more cubic inches and horsepower, creating one of the fastest street rods around and making him “well known” in the auto parts world of street rodding. He eventually relocated all of these businesses to his coliseum off of Highway 64 where there is plenty of acreage surrounding the structure. Construction of the coliseum began in 1955 by his father, Bobby Joe Manziel, Sr., who passed away leaving only the exterior of the building completed. His father wanted to open a huge sports arena to host boxing matches. In 1981, Bobby was determined to fulfill his father’s dream of turning the coliseum into a major venue for thousands to enjoy. In November, 1983, after years of remodeling, a massive crowd attended the opening of what is now known all over as “The Oil Palace”. The first events were the East Texas Oil and Gas Show and a concert performed by Barbara Mandrell before a packed house. Since then, it has been the home of shows, exhibits, concerts, conventions, sporting events, graduations, and Tyler’s own Junior League Mistletoe and Magic and Texas Rose Festival, never being a tax burden to the Smith County residents. Bobby loved Tyler and served his community in many ways, including sponsoring numerous events. As proud owner, Bobby successfully operated and ran the music and event center for 39 years. He also was the co-owner of Manziel Interests where he worked with his siblings.
Like his father, Bobby also had a love for the oil fields. He was involved in the oil industry as a producer with oil fields in East Texas, and Northern and Central Louisiana. Bobby was also involved in the cattle business, commercial real estate and heavy equipment construction. As an entrepreneur in so many fields, he was incredibly knowledgeable, and always selflessly sharing his knowledge to help others succeed. He was balanced, cheerful, and always even keeled. Bobby was truly one-of-a kind!
He had an amazing love for animals. He was successful at training and racing thoroughbreds. Bobby always had hunting and hound dogs running around his ranch. He also loved roosters. His cell phone ringer was the sound of a crowing rooster. In fact, when only a youngster at St. Gregory’s Elementary, he would ride his horse to school carrying a rooster, and leave the rooster in his locker. It worked out well until one day a classmate decided to tell the Nun that she kept hearing a rooster crowing, and he was busted! He raced hot rods in Caddo Mills when he was young.
He never met a stranger, and was so friendly to everyone he encountered. He had friends all over in many countries, including the Philippines, Hawaii, and Mexico. He made it a point to stay in touch with his friends, local and afar. He was always there to lend a helping hand to everyone. He gave his time and attention to all in need, not matter what it entailed. He was intelligent, genuine, loving, and simply down to earth. Bobby’s legacy has many facets, but his family was his priority, first and foremost. He was an extremely wonderful and proud father to all of his children. He made each and every one of them feel like an only child. He was an absolutely amazing father! He cherished family gatherings, entertaining at home with cookouts for his Lebanese family and good friends, sharing entertaining stories, watching college and pro football as well as Fox News, especially Judge Jeanine and Jesse Waters. He was an avid Elvis Presley fan. In fact, he asked his mother to financially back Elvis when Elvis was just a kid on the streets in Tyler, singing like no other. Bobby was always “thinking” and “planning”. He was the epitome of hard work and perseverance in all he did, personally and professionally. Bobby was beyond special and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and everyone he touched in his life. We know he is rejoicing in heaven with the Lord and his loved ones. We shall see him again soon.
Rosary will be Monday, October 31, 2022 at 4:30 p.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway in Tyler. Visitation will follow from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services with a Requiem Mass will be held on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, with Bishop Strickland officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Tyler. A reception will be held afterwards at the Community Center next to Immaculate Conception Church. IN MEMORY OF
JAMES WILLIAM REESE ( Brother of Glenn Reese)
June 6, 1938 - September 1, 2022
It is with great sadness that the family of James “Jim” Reese announce his passing after a long illness. He was born June 6, 1938 in Dallas, but lived almost all of his life in Tyler. After graduating from high school, he earned a degree from Stephen F. Austin University and married Sondra Edmondson, also of Tyler, in 1959, and together they raised three children. After her passing in 2002, he never remarried.
He had three passions in life. The first – by far - was hunting and shooting, which he did for over seventy years. His happiest times were probably the many hunting/camping trips that he took with his friends and family over the decades. This provided him with material for countless stories which, as a natural storyteller, he enjoyed recounting. Second, he loved yard work, especially tending his azaleas, gardenias, and camellias. And finally, he loved dogs and almost always had a Weimaraner named Misty. Other pastimes included playing 42, reloading shotgun shells, and skeet shooting.
He was known for his good humor and spirits, easy smile, and willingness to help out those around him. To his children, he was loved as a man of high integrity and honesty who encouraged them in whatever pursuits they took up. He was an amazing husband to his wife of forty-two years, and before her death he supported her passion by attending doll conventions with her all around the country. As a widower, he spent his time volunteering at local charities.
He spent virtually all of his professional career selling insurance for Allstate. He was a member of First Baptist Church Tyler his entire life. He is survived by his daughter Gayle Timaeus and his son Byron Reese and wife Sharon. His other son, James Reese, preceded him in death in 2019. Additionally, he has six grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is also survived by his brother Glenn Reese and wife Anne as well as his sister Sue Love and her husband Robert, all also of Tyler, along with numerous nieces and nephews. The family also wishes to express their gratitude to Jim’s faithful caregiver Mary Jacobsen for her kindness and friendship and for taking him on all those meandering country drives he enjoyed so much.
No service is planned. The family is holding a private graveside. They ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either Ducks Unlimited, Heart to Heart Hospice Foundation, or Nicholas Pet Haven.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years Franklin Bollman, sons Kevin Bollman and wife Mary of Dallas, David Bollman and wife Tammy of Heath, and grandchildren George Bollman, Harrison Bollman, Claire Bollman and Amelia Bollman. She was preceded in death by her parents George and Nell Griffin and her brother Dr. Steve Griffin of Tyler.
Evelyn was born September 23, 1943 in Greenville, Texas. Because her father was in combat in North Africa and later at D-Day during World War II, he did not see his daughter until she was two years old.
After the war, the Griffins moved from Greenville to Tyler, Texas. Evelyn attended Robert E. Lee High School where she was a cheerleader and graduated in 1961. She served as a Lady in Waiting at the Tyler Rose Festival in 1963.
Evelyn earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin in 1964. After college, she became a buyer for Titche-Goettinger in Dallas. Later, she taught at the Patricia Stevens College for Women in downtown Dallas.
Evelyn was an interior decorator as well as a licensed real estate broker in Greenville with Danny Darby Real Estate, Inc. Subsequently, she spent many years as a mortgage broker in Greenville and Tyler. She enjoyed helping young couples buy and finance their first homes.
Devoted to their well-being and success, Evelyn supported her sons in their school, church, sports and scouting activities.
Christmas remained Evelyn’s favorite time of the year. For the annual Altrusa Tour of Homes in Greenville, she helped to transform houses with festive holiday displays. Inspired by the Christmas lighting in San Miguel, Mexico, Evelyn recruited her Park Street neighbors to light up each property with luminarias.
Evelyn and Frank established KaDee (Kevin and David) Christmas Tree Farm during the early 1980s. The Kadee Farm has become a popular holiday destination for generations of North Texas families.
As an active supporter of the Greenville community, Evelyn was a member and officer in the Newcomers Club and the Dirtdabblers and Spade and Trowel Garden Clubs. She was a member of the Greenville Revitalization Organization and served on the Greenville Main Street Board. She was also involved with the Greenville Follies.

IN MEMORY OF
Mike Biggs
March 16, 1943 - August 14, 2022
Born on March 16, 1943, to Jeff and Alma Biggs, Mike joined all the saints to praise Holy God on August 14th 2022 after a valiant fight.
He had struggled with one health crisis after another for months, but finally, he is fully restored. No more confusion, no more pain, and no more tears in this fallen world.
Throughout his life, Mike achieved his goals. As a boy, he was awarded Most Valuable Player in Little League. He continued to play baseball and lettered in his sport at Robert E. Lee High School. He was also selected as the representative to Boys Town and graduated with honors in 1961.
After graduating from his beloved University of Texas with a degree in business, Mike remained a loyal fan of the Longhorns. He married Carol Farmer, and they had a son, Brett. Later Mike and Carol welcomed a daughter, Kaye Lynn.
Talented at more than one discipline, Mike taught in the business departments at both Lamar University and Oklahoma State University. At Texas Tech University, Mike taught graduate courses in Statistics. He earned his Master of Business Administration at Texas Tech and began working on his Doctorate Degree there.
During his time in Lubbock, God clarified Mike’s purpose. God led Mike to preach and opened doors of opportunity at Sunset International Bible Institute (then school of preaching), where he studied and learned from several distinguished Bible scholars who impacted his vision.
Mike’s first church to pastor was the Church of Christ in Ponca City and then the Church of Christ in Bartlesville, Ok. After serving there, Mike was recruited to preach at Pleasant Rd. Church of Christ in Arlington, TX. and then Van Church of Christ in Van, TX. He also preached at the Clearview Church of Christ in Lindale, TX.
A talented speaker, Mike touched hearts with his messages of God's love, grace, and forgiveness. To him, nothing could rival the importance of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. At the Tulsa Workshop, Mike was invited as the keynote speaker for 10,000 attendees.
As a certified and licensed financial planner, he worked with Asset Preservation Ministries to create financial plans for congregants based on Biblical principles.
Mike married Joy Ziegler Dunlap and was blessed with two stepchildren Josh and Ginger Dunlap. The couple moved from Mesquite, TX. where they taught, to settle in hideaway Texas.
During the past five years, Mike taught the Saints Alive Bible Class at Hideaway Church. He also enjoyed playing golf and left his love of the sport to his son, Brett. One of his memorable highlights was a trip with Brett to play Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters. He considered that experience the apex of his golfing experiences.
Mike was also blessed with a naturally beautiful singing voice. He could sing “How Great Thou Art” and Elvis’ “Love Me Tender” with equal aplomb. Mike also possessed an uncanny ability to whistle any tune perfectly on key.
Like Jesus Mike was the epitome of masculinity with a tender, caring heart. Never one to kill any living thing, he would catch a bug in the house to release it outside in the grass. His rescue dog, Sadie, reserved a special place to Mike. When she developed diabetes, he gave her insulin shots and carried her outside due to blindness.
Mike’s own experiences had taught him an important lesson: “Life is full of sadness, but it does not have to be lived sadly.”
Mike is survived by son, Brett Biggs and wife Kara of Rogers, AR.; daughter, Kaye Lynn Jones of
Tyler, TX. Carol Farmer Florey of Tyler TX., Joy Biggs-Tunnell of McKinney, TX.; stepdaughter Ginger Dunlap and sister, Becky Mullins of Garland TX.
A proud “Papa B,” Mike has been blessed with two beautiful granddaughters, Hadley and Ansley Biggs of Rogers, AR. and a step grandson Jude Valencia of Tyler, TX.
Special thanks to his loyal friend, Bill Brunnemer, of Hideaway and the staff of Primerose Retirement Community and Hospice of East Texas.
Most importantly Mike is survived both in heaven and on Earth by the many individuals he led to Christ. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Kairos Prison Ministry in care of the Hideaway Church in Mike’s honor.
Visitation services will be held on Saturday, August 20th, 2022, at Caudle-Rutledge-Daugherty Funeral Home in Lindale, TX. from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. Comments and special memories will be given at 4:00 PM.

In Loving Memory of Carey Arthur Woods III
Carey Arthur Woods, III passed away July 10, 2021, at home in Tyler, TX surrounded by family. Carey was born September 15, 1942, in Long Beach, CA to parents Carey Arthur Woods, Jr. and Marion Herd Woods. He was in the first graduating class at Robert E. Lee High School in 1961. After graduation, Carey then served in the U.S. Navy, December 1961-December of 1963, aboard the USS Detector MSO 429, a wooden hull mine sweeper, with reserve obligation ending May of 1966. He came home and attended North Texas State. Although he grew up in the family air-conditioning and plumbing business, his salesmanship took him into the car business for approximately 14 years. He was a promoter for various celebrities in the sixties such as Ike and Tina Turner and Ray Charles bringing them to the Oil Palace in Tyler. Later in life Carey was driven by “the thrill of a deal” in real estate business transactions allowing them opportunities to live in different locations. Carey acquired J.P. Morrow Company Air-Conditioning and Plumbing in Alice, TX along with George C. Cunningham Air-Conditioning and Heating in Harlingen, TX before purchasing C. Woods Co. from his father in 1995. Along with his wife, Monica, they operated the business until, due to health issues, he sold the business, but then later established Woods Comfort Systems in San Marcos, TX. Supporting his children in rodeo activities and involving them in the air-conditioning business helped instill a true work ethic - work first and fun later. That fun included Carey’s love of lake life with his family at Lake LBJ in Horseshoe Bay and Lake Tyler. He worked hard and played hard. A warrior in his fight against heart disease, liver cancer, and leukemia, Carey was also a true patriot and conservative touching many lives with his spirit, kindness, and generosity. He took great joy in being a greeter at Marvin UMC, being a member of the Mineola Kiwanis Club, and a committed member of the Olympic Plaza workout center for daily exercise where he enjoyed the camaraderie with fellow members. He was an avid supporter of various fund raisers including St. Jude’s, American Cancer Society, Heart Association, conservative ideals and leadership, and the El Progreso Memorial Library. He considered his employees and past employees as family and offered assistance when needed. Carey is survived by his wife of 28 years, Monica Greathouse Woods; sons Carey Arthur Woods, IV (Chip) and wife Pamela of Alice, TX; Chris Woods of Lakeway, TX; Jack Ware and wife Allison of Corpus Christi, TX; Waco Ware and wife Kelly of Taft, TX; and Will Doran and wife Meagan of Tyler, TX; sister Marion Krug and husband Jeff, of Alta Loma, CA; mother-in-law Margie L. Bourn of Crystal City, TX; sister-in-law Vickie Weisinger of Uvalde, TX; and brother-in-law Joe Greathouse and wife Irma, of Crystal City, TX. He is also survived by three nieces. Carey was very proud of his ten grandchildren who dearly loved their Pawpy. The family would like to thank their long time family friend and care-giver, Lottie Ervin; and family internist, Dr. Thomas Buzbee and staff of TIMA. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Nancy Brumley Posey. Services are scheduled for Saturday, July 24, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home in Tyler, TX. The family invites you to enjoy coffee and donuts with them in Carey’s memory one hour prior to the service.
Memorial donations in his honor can be made to the charity of one’s choice. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Carey Arthur Woods III please visit our Sympathy Store.
