Everyone,

   class of 1961

How is the weather down South?I awakened every morn with sunshine! The NW has experienced the

warmest winter this year! I walk and carouse around with a ongoing sun tan which enabled me to

work on my current research project on a film icon of the 1940's rather than watch football or soccer games

on Sunday TV!

Hi Maurice,

Who are you researching??

Patty,It is Arthur Dooley Wilson:Breakthrough Black Actor/ CIVIL RIGHTS CRUSADER,WHO WAS A NATIVE OF TYLER!

Let me refer you to the article I published in March issue,2013 Classic Images "RALPH FAULKNER:FENCING MASTER TO THE STARS". Phone Carol Peterson at 563-262-0569. e-mail :classicimages@classicimages.com;website : classicimages ,com.

Carol will mail you a copy for just $6.Unfortunately,I ran out of complimentary ciopies ! The same company

also publishes 'FILMS OF THE GOLDEN AGE' magazine.

You are probably aware of these magazines as well as 'SIGHT AND SOUND',CINEACTION,CINEASTE,

and Empire,Film Comment,Film Quarterly.

But I HAVE other things in the works with access to three editors and a grant writer:

        1) revision of my book based on my MA THESIS(TCU) :STONEWALL JACKSON'S SURGEON:HUNTER HOLMES MCGUIRE ;Fundraising site will enhance my research which may involve reserch in UK including

Sandhust.

      2) research and production of biography of Edmund Purdom,British film actor.I am in touch with

his daughter ,who has all of his papers! She lives in Paris and is employed with ITV(French television.

3)Research interests involving Africa in world politics especially ivory trade, and interviews with Ethiopian refugees especially former nurse of Haile Selassie and a former cabinet member in Haile Selassie's government!

I do have a background in International Relations and comparative poilitics which I took at TCU with

Dr AUGUST O SPAIN,who was related to Roberts and Roberts Attorneys of Tyler .

My editors and grant writers are women. I am glad because I feel women are more humane and responsible

than men! I know a young woman who is a recent Oxford University graduate. I depended

on her for her editing of the Fauklkner article. Her M.SCI Oxford degree was in African diaspora politics.I foresee her in a position of international diplomacy and leadership! She will fly to Kampala ,Uganda in two

weeks on a  research grant in the field of Ugandan art!

As you know, this is Africa's moment in the area of geopolitics! I am on facebook, and feel free to phone me

any time.Ask Michael/Nez Gross for the phone number.

    BEST,

Howard Barnett

Hi Maurice,

That's quite an impressive resume.  It's good that Tyler has produced scholars such as you.  I don't know in what part of the northwest you live, but my brother, Les, lives in Gig Harbor, WA.

Hello Howard Barnett........a real smoke jumper.  I never jumped out of a perfectly good aircraft, but I do understand that was a major part of your function.  Impressive report on Maurice Shaw.

I loved hearing about Maurice!  Certainly living an exciting interesting life!  Thank you for all the information Maurice!  I am not as involved as you!  I have a huge collection of Hollywood actors and autographs and have an agent who buys for me-all authenticated!  I am mostly interested in Gone With the Wind and have an enormous collection in that area!  I also have hundreds of autographed books from sessions I attend!

It is enjoyable to come across that item that you don't have!  New treasures!

Patty,

I am seeking photos or autographed photos of Arthur Dooley Wilson,Edmund Purdom, John Loder,

Lana Turner,Rita Hayworth,Frances Rafferty,and  Alexis Smith.

My mom,Fannette Friedlander Klotz was at the Falcon School of Hollywood with both Alexis Smith

and Frances Rafferty .If you wish to obtain a copy of the article I had published on the Falcon School

of Hollywood ,let me know.

LeRoy,of course,I remember  my Uncle Bernard and Aunt Blanche,By the way, I adored Aunt Blanche. She came toi my rescue regarding crtain family issues. When my biography of the civil war surgeon were in the planning stages,

she gave me full support.I plan to augment, revise, and republish that book!

Howard, I live in Seattle.Gig Harbor sounds familiar.I willl check the map!

I do have a busy ageenda! By the way,my editors and grant writer are all women !!!

I am glad because women are more humane and more responsible!

 I understand you are a progressive,social Democrat,and a Obama supporter!

Is that true? I voted for Obama twice! I dont wish to alienate any Vietnam veterans ,but I feel more of the

nation's budget is spent on the  military-industrial complex and to fight ISIS,AND NOT ON ENTITLEMENTS

OR FUNDS FOR THE UNDERPRIVILEDGED!

Patty, Ms Nunnamaker recommended my mom to the Falcon Studio!

Would the name,AGNES SANDELL NUNNAMAKER ring a bell? She operated a dance studio next door

to the People National Bank(current BANK OF AMERICA). Ms Nunnamaker had national ties to film and theatrical enterprises. She gave me special speech therapy at the age of 6!She brought over to

my grandmother's residence(Lena Friedlander Klotz) a picture dictionary which speech therapists utilize!

Yes,I had speech problems and stuttering like George VI ,who was tutored by Lionel Logue.Logue's pioneering efforts made it possible for the school system in both US and UK to handle students with the speech defects!

As I remember ,I was in the category of being retarded because of the flaws in the American educational system. But my parents had me checked out by clinical psychologists and several Jewish physicians who were living in Tyler at the time.I was declared far from being a RETARD!!

Patty,I did not mean to be long winded,The Best,Maurice

Maurice, I enjoy hearing this kind of history! I will check with my collecting agent to see what he has in reference to the people you mentioned!  I got to know Peter Ford and he sent me a lot of information anout Glenn Ford, including his father's love for Rita Hayworth.  It is fun to get to know these people! One of my favorites is Ben Chapman who was the original Monster in the movie, The Creagure From the Black Lagoon. I have gotten to meet so many of the classic actors and actresses and that has made this a fun hobby.

Patty Fox,

Do you really have this hobby?  Did you really get to meet Peter Ford?  Glenn Ford was my very favorite actor; and at the time of his death, I was disappointed to see that not too much was written about him in various newspapers and magazines.

Hi Linda,

I communicate with Peter Ford online but at one time he almost stayed at our home when he came to Houston! Someone beat me to the punch!  Glen Ford was one of my favorites!  There have always been petitions to place him on the Hollywood walk of Fame!  I was shocked he wasn't there and unfortunately still isn't!

Maurice,

I looked up Dooley Wilson and was amazed that he was Sam in Casablanca and sang As Time Goes By.  That was one of my favorites.  His autographed pictures are going for$500 and up!  One just sold on EBay.  I found another but it was taken off the market because it didn't sell-high price!  It was a better picture then the EBay one!!

Still checking on others!

Patty,

I do not  want to go through much expense in obtaining Dooley's  pictures because I can obtain images or pictures at the New York Public Library,Schaumberg Institue, and at Wikipedia Encyclopedia omline!

The Film studies Librarian at UW Suzolow Library  is also assisting me.Now if you can come up with more

sources by using databases through your local library, then let me know.By the way, where are you?Tyler or Dallas?

Let me know too if anyone in our class would know the name AGNES SANDELL NUNNAMA.

Off to the UDISTRICT right now to the library!!

Thank you Maurice!  I am going to check out your article as soon as I have a little more time!  My collecting agents have none of your pictures!  They are older and expensive to get with an autograph.  I will keep looking to see what I find!  I don't have any of them in my collection either.

To all who sent me birthday wishes.  THANK YOU.  I really never thought that I would live this long.  It was not in the thought process when we were young.  I have come to the absolute conclusion that "living is hazardous to ones health".  From here on, just want to live with some quality.  To all, I can say like in Lomesome Dove, hell of a vision and life that I have had so far.  Wonderful wife, 3 daughters that have not embarrest themselves and our family, and 7 grandchildern {6 boys and 1 girl},  Great list of assets.

Hello!

This is my very first time to send a message.  I will be brave and admit that I am not a computer "person" at all and am totally indimidated by this process.  I do not have much of a clue about all the little icons that appear at the top of this page and do not know if this message will appear anywhere at all - Ha!

I just read some messages between my best childhood friend, Patty Fox  and Maurice Shaw.  I thought I would attempt to send a little personal "bit" of my own.  Last weekend Steve and I were so privileged to attend a concert by, none other than, PAT BOONE!  Remember "April Love" and "Love Letters in the Sand"?  About 6 months or so ago, Steve and I moved from San Antonio where we have lived for 12 years to New Braunfels, Texas.  Our son Matt and wife, Jenni gave us tickets for Christmas.  Included were these tickets where Pat Boone appeared at the Brauntex theater here.

Have to tell you that he was amazing at 82 years of age.  He's still married (for 62 years) to Shirley and bore an amazing testimony to his relationship with Jesus Christ.  He actually interjected numerous references to Jesus throughout his concert.  He also included his deep concerns for our precious America which I know many of us share.  I had the opportunity to meet and very briefly speak with him at the close of the concert and though I am not a celebrity fanlaugh, I considered this a unique privilege to meet a man of his character and talent.  I even  asked him to sign my CD!  Woo-Hoo!

Well, to whomever I have connected with writing my little note, it was nice speaking with you. Ha!

Hi Harriet. Glad you got to see Pat B, one of the true greats of the music industry. He sang songs that were songs, songs that had a melody and words that you could understand, songs that weren't anti-police, or anti-Christ, songs with meaning, usually about love, but always positive. A great role model. Who's doing that now? Oh well, good to hear from you. Jack

(I could not figure out how to post this to everyone as a new message, so am just adding it to "responses;"  Apologies if this is in the wrong place.)

Dear REL 1961 Classmates,  I regret that I will miss the upcoming reunion – hope to see you in 2021.  I wish you a wonderful weekend, and eagerly await the class photo and updates on your lives.   Many thanks to Gail, Bobby, Walter, and all of you who have kept in touch with us, maintained the web site, and organized/executed the reunions.

A brief update on my current status: still in NH, though spending more of the winter weeks in warmer climes – TN with my son’s family, CA with my daughter’s family, and TX with other family members.  I am very grateful (knock on wood) for good health, good friends, and a comfortable life-style.  Summers and autumns typically find my home overflowing with children, grandchildren, dogs, and other family members and friends looking to escape the heat in the aforementioned places.

Over the last few days, I have been clearing old e-mails, and in that process had the opportunity to re-read a few years’ worth of correspondence with our classmate Sherry Roosth.  I was reminded of her generosity; her intellect; the breadth and depth of her knowledge; her appreciation of a broad range of literary and musical genres (Mary Oliver to Dave Barry, the Mambo Kings to Mahler); her seemingly equal appreciation of New Yorker cartoons and politically incorrect bawdy jokes; her culinary skills; her unfailing good humor; and her unflinching courage (never a “why me?”) as she faced the final months of her life.  I hope those of you who remember her fondly will find a quiet moment to raise a toast to Sherry’s too-short life.
