Michael Jeff Payne
07-16-1943 - 03-04-2013
********************************************
Michael Jeff Payne was born July 16, 1943, in Midland, Texas, and grew up in Tyler, Texas. Michael attended the University of North Texas and was in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years. Michael was a deeply patriotic man. He put an enormous flag inside his airplane hangar. Flying was his passion, especially acrobatic flying. On a clear day, he would fly his wife, Pascale, to Lake Texoma for a hamburger and enjoy the day, and then fly back. He was a man of abiding faith. He was devoted to his family, including his son and daughter, Alex and Gabrielle. He was known for being an ethical, forthright realtor, and, with his wife, who was from France, they tailored part of their real estate business to accommodate residents from France. In addition to flying, Michael loved riding his motorcycle and sailing, which he did both on White Rock Lake and in the Pacific Ocean. He also loved bicycle riding, and rode in the Loire Valley of France. He loved to ride horses and, with his daughter, Gabrielle, participated in the equestrian Cavalcade at the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Not surprisingly, Michael was an Eagle Scout. His family is comforted by knowing that Mike died while doing what he loved best, flying his airplane. Survivors include Michael's wife, Pascale Agnes Portier Payne; his son and daughter, Alex Payne and Gabrielle Payne; sisters, Angela Payne and Debbie Kader; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Liliane and Jacques Portier. Michael was preceded in death by his father, Harry Payne, and his mother, Cleo Dobbins Payne. Services will be at the First United Methodist Church, 4405 Main Street, Rowlett, Texas, at 3:00 p.m., Friday, March 8, 2013.

To the Mike Payne Family:
I am so sorry to learn about Mike's death. When we were in high school, we had our horses in the same pasture and barn. Mike had a black and white paint. I had a brown Tennessee Walker, and my sister had a palomino. Sometimes, we rode together.
We exchanged a few e-mails right after my Mother's death. He talked about his children and camping out and sleepingon the ground! I couldn't believe that he was still doing such thngs. I talked to Mike briefly at our reunion in October, 2011.
I wish your family the best; and again, I am sorry about this tragedy.
Sincerely,
Linda Dorough Jernigan

I have known Mike since Birdwell Elementary. As it happens so often, we lost contact through the years. But this new video, so brilliantly produced, reminds me of his ever-present smile. And I think he's smiling because he loved every part of his life - his family, his hobbies, and his profession. It's a shame that you don't realize how interesting it would have been to keep in touch with a guy like Mike, who relished life and always made the most out of it, until you can't anymore. Carpe diem...
